The Merc Renovation: Day 2+3

Demo Demo Demo Demo Demo Demo Demo

Did I mention this post would be about demo? ? Guys we’ve been eat, sleep, and breathing sheetrock dust around these parts! The Merc renovation is in full swing and things seem (in my opinion) to be moving really quickly!

So hows it going!? Honestly I’m exhausted. Physical labor for 10+ hours a day is no joke but in the southern Utah heat it is freakin’ brutal, I don’t know how I haven’t lost 15 lbs. cause I’ve definitely sweated out that much.

We’ve already had some fun discoveries. The concrete cutters have been here for the last 3 days. Its so funny, when we told our friends that we were having the concrete cut professionally a few of them were like “oh no, its totally a DIY job. You could have saved so much money by renting the cutter and doing it yourself.” We were feeling a little like maybe that would have been a better choice until we saw THIS…

WHAT. THE. FREAK.

Yes if you have a normal 4″ slab DIYing that would be a great option but I AM SO GLAD that we didn’t try to DIY this. It would have taken us 3 months. Literally. These things are like boulders. We aren’t sure what the grand total for the job is but I’ll definitely let you guys know what it comes back at!

One of the most satisfying phases of demo was taking out the wall the separated the entryway from the kitchen. (In the picture below you can see the wood planked section of the wall, that is going to be our front door!)

This picture is standing in the entryway looking into the kitchen.

We still have some possible demo in the back bedroom to do, but hopefully we can get that situated and move on from this dusty hell.

I’ve had so much fun figuring out how to vlog all of this, here are our day 2 and 3 videos! (Day 3 is my fave, it gives you some serious insight into my marriage….)

See you guys tomorrow!

  1. Awe Mandy …. thanks for doing this.
I wish you Both were on
    “Flipping George”
    Or something like that !!
    Hugs from Houston !!

  2. Looks like you two are at least having fun with all the demo 🙂 Looking forward to seeing the progress!
    Best,
    Kelly

  3. You should totally shower together! I remember when my in-laws (in their 60’s) casually mentioned that they were going to shower together. Shock. Can’t believe they said that in front of grandma and grandpa. They said that Nancy couldn’t have the soap on her hands. Her hands would break out, so Bill had to hep her shampoo her hair. Yah right. We saw them smile that funny little smile.
    So fun.

  4. I don’t like your ‘I told you so’ attitude with the comment about how ppl told you to diy the concrete.

    1. I am totally baffled on how you interpreted that statement as a “told you so”. I took it more of she was doubting herself because she thought she should be doing it herself but is glad she didn’t because the floors were way thicker than she and her readers thought.

  5. ZOMG! Pleeeeeeeeease find a way to use some of those concrete chunks for a side-table base or a plant stand or SOMETHING! They’re really neat looking and it would be a lovely way to show off a part of the inner guts of the place.

    1. I agree with this!! I can totally see you reusing a piece as an outdoor table base or mini table somewhere as an homage to the strong foundation that is not only literally under you but that you have in your life and this massive renovation!

  6. I hear ya on the concrete cutting. My ex worked for a concrete cutting company for years and so at least had an idea of what was involved when we had to remove 30 feet of poured concrete sidewalk that ran alongside the driveway and on to the side door of the house. Easy peasy, he thought.

We rented a jackhammer and he started breaking it up at the driveway level. That was fine – it was only 4″ thick at that point. However, the thickness gradually increased to over 16″ by the time he worked his way to the house. We ended up with a pile of concrete chunks that are horrifyingly reminiscent of what you’ve got in your pics. Ugh. Fortunately we had space behind a new retaining wall to fill so that’s where most of it resides now.

  7. Glad you didn’t DIY that concrete! What some people would DIY is not necessarily best for every person or home. We renovated our old farmhouse and did everything ourselves, except we paid someone to come in and finish the drywall (we hung it all ourselves). Could we have done it ourselves? Sure, but it would have been very tedious and taken lots more time than it took the team of pros. It was worth it to us!

  8. I think the people who had recommended that you DIY the concrete cutting weren’t remembering that the area you were going to cut into had been a commercial garage. Either that, or they didn’t know about the kind of extra thick slab that application would require.

  9. Enjoyed watching ya… and wonder why this isn’t on the home reno channel!! defo a pleasure and looking forward to your project getting finish!!
Keep on dancing with tools!! 😀

  10. Man you guys just made my day, a total inspiration and great demo team! Thanks for the laugh and your upbeat spirit!

BTW I’m loving your haircut, it’s super cute on you in my unnecessary opinion. 🙂
