It actually looks done correctly and indeed is supposed to have the more abstract lines(not strait) which also is why it goes great in this modern space and my guess is that vintage revivals did their own tile work?.

It was much tougher in the dark ages of my youth when matchsticks were all you had as tile spacers, but we still managed. Nowadays with plastic spacers and crosses, there’s no excuse for tiles set unevenly as they are here. As for the grout, it’s all over the place, and the dark color only highlights the sloppiness. Yes, I realize the tiles have a wavy surface, but a tiler worth his salt can work around it to leave a neat, even grout line.
