The first project right out of the gate on the boy wonder’s nursery was installing flooring. I am not a fan of carpet and would much rather have hardwood floors and big rugs, so that is exactly what we did! The flooring that we used is Jasper Birch Aspen from BuildDirect. Its the same flooring that we put down when we moved into our house almost 7 years ago (holy crap, where has the time gone?!) we love it that much. If you’re looking for a good medium brown shade, look no further. And they have free samples, so yay!!

This room is right off the entryway so we decided to continue the floor directly across (as opposed to installing a threshold piece). Hey, has anyone seen that shirt? I totally forgot about it! Also, tell me my husband is not the hunkiest man alive.

This flooring is tongue and groove. There are a ton of differing opinions on how to install (we’re installing it over a concrete slab) but the way we did it was to float it and secure the pieces together with glue in the groove. If your new to the flooring lingo, floating means that the floor is attached to itself but not actually attached to the ground. It “floats” between the walls.

The first thing that we needed to do was cut a groove in the previously laid plank. It’s a little skinnier than the other ones (we had to cut it down to fit because we previously had carpet in the room) so there wasnt a groove in it.

Court cut the groove using a jamb saw. Can I just say, who even knows that’s a thing? Let alone has one? Thank goodness for random tools my FIL owns. If you don’t have a jamb saw, you can totally use a dremel or an oscillating tool to cut your groove!

While we had the tool out, Court also cut a small section off of the bottoms of the door jambs and the closet trim. He used a scrap piece of hardwood to measure how much needed to be removed so that the flooring could fit underneath the trim.

Once our groove was groovin’ and our piece was cut to size, we were ready to lay the floor.

The first thing to go down is a vapor barrier. This helps with keeping moisture away from the wood, it also helps with the sound, so when you walk on the floor it doesn’t sound hollow.

Then we got to work. I am not a fan of perfectly lined up hardwoods. I would much rather have it laid out randomly, which works really well with flooring like ours because it comes in 3 different lengths.

After we glued the pieces together, we used painters tape to hold them tight while the glue dried for 24 hours.

I love laying floors, I feel like its really fast work (especially if you have one person laying them and the other person making cuts) we had the whole floor done in just a few hours.

I don’t have a shot of the floors finished without furniture because we all know that is the funnest part and patience is not my finest quality. But here’s what it looks like in the other parts of the house (you can see this room reveal here!)

Total we spend around $600 for the flooring and supplies for the nursery, and I feel pretty dang happy about it!

When we were staring on the baby’s nursery, I knew without a doubt that the crib needed to be something amazing. I just didn’t know what that looked like. IKEA has such great and inexpensive cribs so a Gulliver was my jumping off point.

Originally I was planning on completely replacing the end pieces and doing a style similar to this (with the solid ends) we even got the main pieces built, but when we put them on, they just weren’t special enough. It looked like every other crib in every other nursery and I just hated it. So we scrapped that Idea.

The idea for the house structure came from flipping though old projects. A few years ago I built a reading nook for the girls and it was basically childhood in a jar. So I took the idea and ran with it.

To be honest, I was sort of terrified to post a crib hack because people are VERY opinionated about projects, especially about baby projects. Obviously having a bar that a small child can George of the Jungle, right over the edge of the crib isn’t a great plan. But until that point, it would be fine. The solution was to make the house structure separate from the crib so that when the time comes, it can be easily moved and voila! you have a playhouse AND a crib!

The other really awesome thing about this project is that we used suuuuper inexpensive 2×2’s from Home Depot. I think that they are around $2.00 for each 8ft piece. So this whole project will cost you less than $20!!

Here is your cut list:

(4) 2×2 cut to 33”

(4) 2×2 cut to 29 1/4”

(4) 2×2 cut to 27 1/2” with a 45 degree angle on each end

(2) 2×2 cut to 54”

(1) 1×3 cut to 54”

Start by making a square using the 33” pieces for the sides and the 29 1/4” pieces for the top and bottom. Repeat for the other side.

Join them together using wood glue and a wood screw. Be sure to drill a pilot hole beforehand so that you don’t split the wood!

Next, take your angled pieces and attach it to the top of your square.

Repeat for the second side. This will give you your 2 end pieces.

Connect them using the 1×3. I cut a 22.5 degree angle running the length of each side so that it matched the pitch of the house frame. Then I connected it with a screw through the front of the pitch.

You might be wondering why I didn’t do a cross piece across the front of the crib/house. The reason is because there is a slight lip on the outer sides of the IKEA crib, so a board that ran in front of the rail would have a small gap in between and I didn’t want tiny fingers to get caught in it.

The house just the way it is would be amazing. Super simple scandy design, but that just wasn’t in the cards for this guy. Mostly because he was completely enveloped in the animal wall. Guys, you should know that I still have an iPhone 4, so while I would like to apologize for the quality of this picture, instead I will proudly show you that the dinosaur can still take a picture. ish.

Because of the wood blindness I decided to paint the house frame an awesome shade of navy blue. If your stressing about it, you can really alllllll the info on safely painting baby furniture here. Its not scary. Promise.

Instead of my trusty Mohair roller I decided to use a sponge brush and it worked really well. It took a few coats because deep blue has a hard time with coverage but I LOVE how it turned out.

The last step, once everything is happy and painted and ready for a permanent residence inside your home, is to attach the cross pieces on the bottom. I put these on the inside of the crib legs so that the little house wouldn’t shift. This holds everything nice and snug on the crib.

When I saw these hanging planters at IKEA I knew they would be perfect for…something. I had no idea what but there was no way I was going to continue to live my life without them.

Insert the boy wonder’s nursery. They are the perfect size for baby gear and so so cute.

The original idea was to hang them from the ceiling but it felt a little too swingy. So I grabbed some copper bits from my garage and whipped up the wall bracket.

To make this you’ll need:

(2) 12” pieces of 3/4” Copper pipe **You can buy this precut at Home Depot! If you have some laying around like I did you’ll need a pipe cutter to cut it!
(2) 3/4” Copper Caps
(1) 3/4” Copper Elbow
(2) 3/4” Copper Pipe Straps
Stud Finder
Screws

Start by cutting your pipe (if you didn’t buy the precut pieces)

Connect both pieces with the 90 degree elbow forming an L shape.

Attach the caps to the ends of the pipe

Use your stud finder to track down the stud in the wall that you need to attach it to. If it were me I would ONLY attach it to a stud, I wouldn’t use drywall anchors because the planters are a little bit heavy, and hello, there’s a baby.

Once every thing is mounted to the wall, fill your planters with the necessities and hang!

This is one of those killer projects that can be done in less than 10 minutes, so if you’ve got a need for a little more space put it at the top of your DIY list!

Thank you so much for all of the sweet comments on the baby’s room. It was such a labor of love (no pun intended) and I cant wait to start sharing the tutorials! I know the rest of blogland is in Christmas mode, but we’re in baby mode over here.

If you’ve landed here without seeing the full room reveal, you can check that out here!

It was really important for me to create a space that felt like a spot a little boy would love, and could be functional (my mind tends to lean toward the way things look vs. the way they are actually interacted with) but this space needed to be safe AND amazing.

We started by painting all of the walls Sherwin-Williams 2016 Color of the Year Alabaster. Trying to keep things real on VR is a huge priority for me, so I hope you loved those before pictures. Man oh man.

When we ripped the carpet out of the girls rooms I painted the concrete (it was an inexpensive and impactful fix) but as its one of my goals in the next year to get our house to feel more cohesive, we decided to bite the bullet and continue the hardwood from our main living areas into this room. We’ll most likely be doing that in the other rooms too. #saynotocarpet The flooring that we have is this engineered hardwood from Build Direct. They have the best prices on flooring that I’ve been able to find and our original floors have held up so well, even with our crazy lifestyle. You cant beat $2.99 a sq/ft.

The stacked animal block wall was the first project that we tackled. It was one of those keep you up in the middle of the night because you are SO EXCITED to get it done projects (which isn’t hard at this point). I cant wait to give you the full rundown of the process.

The crib is an IKEA Guliver hacked with a removable playhouse. (Tutorial coming!)

So many of you wanted to know about the plaid crib sheet + changing pad cover. Its actually made from a Threshold sheet set so if you are itching for one, you might want to get on it before they are gone! For those that want the look without the DIY this red and brown buffalo check crib sheet is adorable.

Both the yellow blanket, and the striped one are from Homegoods. Now is the time of year to get a great selection, they have so many!

The cute little penguin and deer are adorable right?! They are from a company called Cuddle+Kind. Not only are they making the world cute, but they are on a charge to stop childhood hunger. For every doll purchased, 10 meals are donated to help fight childhood hunger around the world and in North America. You’ve got to pop over and check out the entire collection (and hellooooo Christmas present!)

You can read all about the thrifted boy scout giraffe painting here. I mean, how can you not love him?!

All of the furniture in the room (besides the crib) was thrifted. Finding a rocker that is comfy and not hideous and most importantly not $1000 was almost a full time job. Then I remembered this black chair that I had tucked away in my storage unit. I love it when that happens!!

The dresser is an iconic Broyhill Brasilia that I found thrifting about a year ago. Its always fun when a dresser you score for under $100 turns out to be worth 10 times that.

Obviously I didn’t want to attach the changing station to the top of it, stay tuned for the easy way we secured it without doing any major damage to the dresser. The base is a DIY (tutorial coming).

The warrior painting was thrifted, as well as the leather cup ($.50!). The lotion pump is from Target and the white canisters are from Homegoods. You can see my tutorial for mounting Staghorn Ferns here. It is seriously one of my favorite things to hang on a wall.

Speaking of wall hangings, how great is that hanging storage?! Its made with these planters from IKEA. I filled it with 2 of everyone’s most recommended baby supplies. These aden +anais swaddlers and Sophie la Giraffe.

The geometric himmeli letters are coming your way soon! In the mean time, head over to the shop and snatch up a kit for making a wreath!

The light was thrifted quite a while ago and has played musical rooms (you can see it in my living room here and the tutorial for how we rewired it here) It just needed the right place to live and I LOVE how it looks in the baby’s room. I was worried it would seem to small, but once we hung it I was really happy with the size.

One thing that was a must have for me was a mirror. You got to be able to check and see if that little nugget is sleeping right? I found this one at Homegoods, but you can get one similar here.

The large rust colored rug was the biggest splurge of the room ($300) from a local vintage shop called Urban Renewal. If you ever find yourself in St. George GO THERE. They have so many cool pieces. I wanted a large flat woven rug to fill the space, but I don’t think that a scratchy wool rug is really baby friendly so I layered it with this $69.00 white rug from Target. It is so soft and fluffy and a fantastic price.

When we were in LA doing Alex’s Apartment Makeover I snatched up these old school Little Golden Book books from World Market and have been saving them ever since. Did you read them when you were little? So many childhood flashbacks.

Ok phew. Did I get everything? If not, leave a comment below and I’ll update the post! Have an amazing weekend!!

Venturing into boy territory is a whole new world and the nursery was kind of my first run at it. The hands down best part though is how involved Court was on everything. You guys. He has literally no opinion about decor ever. But this room? This room is apparently wayyy more important than anything else we’ve done in our house to date.

The space itself was sort of a hodge podge of crap. It had 3 different paint colors on the walls (its like America’s Test Kitchen for my house apparently) it had no flooring, no closet doors, was the catch all for project contraband, AND had a giant recliner in it. This room is seriously embarrassing but I didn’t want to just decorate it to decorate it. It needed a higher purpose.

I wanted the room to feel boy-ish and fun, with some really heavy childlike elements without making you feel like you stepped into a Fisher-Price catalog. Ya know? I had a really hard time deciding on a color scheme and ultimately went with a really great rust, mustard yellow, olive green and navy. It still feels classic, but is an updated version.

So do you want to see what it looks like now?

There are just so many things to talk about!

Lets start with the wall color. For this room I teamed up with my family (we’ve moved past the friendship phase, we are full on blood related at this point) at Sherwin-Williams to announce their 2016 Color of the Year (you can see my 2015 announcement here!)

The 2016 Color of the Year is SW-7008 Alabaster and is the most perfect slightly warm white. I think sometimes people feel like if they love color, then they need a bold color on the walls, but that is so not the case! If you love color, white walls give you freedom to use it WAY more than you would be able to if you committed to something dramatic.

The floor got a major upgrade when we decided to continue the engineered hardwood from the main living areas into this space (its something that you’ll see in the future in the other bedrooms too).

There are so many things in the little gremlin’s room that play nicely together its hard to pick a stand out star.

The jumping off point was the stacked animal block wall. I love a good plywood project and when I was trying to come up with something babyish without being cheesy or too trendy. Animal blocks just seemed like the perfect answer. It frustrates me to no end how hard it is to get the size of the room to translate into photos. This wall is 10 feet tall and 12 feet wide, just for reference.

Everyone in the fam has their favorite critter (mine are the porcupines). Aren’t they just the cutest?! We’ll delve pretty deep into this project, so stay tuned! The hardest part designwise was to make sure that none of our wooden friends found themselves in um… compromising positions?

One of my favorite elements in the room is the crib. We had big plans and actually built new sides to upgrade a basic IKEA crib, but when we finished, it just wasn’t special enough. So we scrapped it and decided to do something else. The house frame is completely removable (when he starts getting big enough to use it like a jungle gym). We can just move it to a different part of the room and have an adorable little playhouse, so it grows with him! Tutorial coming on that! (Don’t worry, we are still using the hanging cradle, its just going to be in my room)

The sock sloth was a quick 30 minute sewing project that just melts my heart! Don’t you just love him?!

Speaking of sewing, it would not be a true Vintage Revivals room without a cactus right?! Well obviously that wasn’t going to happen, especially the giant floor cactus of my dreams. I took the path of least resistance and and most huggablitliy and made a giant plush cactus, complete with stackable squishy stones to fill the pot. (Psst, that little bear cub in the bottom corner is Court’s favorite animal because it reminds him of the old school Cubs logo. Adorable.)

The boy scout giraffe just kills me. I fiercely love his weirdness.

On the other side of this little room we have the changing station.

Remember last week when I hinted about the Himmeli Letters? We are just finishing up all of the video tutorials and they should be ready in the next week and 1/2 (hopefully!!) The little guy’s name is still undecided, though we do have a front runner (I love it more than Court does so we’ll see…) so I need to come up with something that wasn’t the baby’s undecided name. And I didn’t want normal nursery stuff (like Sleep, or Dream, or Baby) Wee Boy just has such a cute ring to it.

The hanging diaper holder is an awesome way to clear up more space on the dresser (and it only took 15 minutes!)

The triangle shelves are just so good. I had them staged all adorable with little plants and vases and Court vetoed it immediately. He then proceeded to go to his mom’s and find all of his old baseball cards and stage it himself. While it might not be the most pinterest-worthy vignette it just makes me grin like a fool every time I see it, so it stays just the way it is. Obviously there are no expectations for the kids future.

I LOVE how this room turned out. I cant wait to start sharing the tutorials with you guys, hang on tight cause there are a lot! (Source List, Crib, Wall Treatment, Cactus, Sloth, Crib Sheet, Triangle Shelf, Changing Tray, Closet Doors, Installing Hardwood, Himmeli Letters, Hanging Diaper Caddy, Rope Fringe Pillow)

So now lets chat a little bit more about paint. After I did a ton of research about the safest/best paint to use in a nursery I ended up using Sherwin-Williams Harmony on the walls and ProClassic on the doors, trim, and house structure on the crib. If your wondering about why I chose the paint formulas that I did, read that post and educate yourself.

When Sherwin-Williams told me what their 2016 Color of the Year was in July I was SO excited. I love a good white wall. It gives you so much freedom to unleash the beast and do really brave things to a space. Picking the perfect shade of white can be daunting. Alabaster is a slightly warmer version and breathes life into wood and warmer color tones.

So what do you think? Are we ready to have a baby?!

Hellooo!! Last weekend my MIL and I ventured out to see what treasures the secondhand stores of St. George had to offer. We didn’t find a ton (womp womp) but I did find the most wonderful picture for the little guy’s nursery!!

The room is coming along (the reveal will be on the blog in mid-Nov.) but its just been missing something. Something a little weird. Something that makes it not look so perfect. Something that makes you feel like there is a little bit of personality.

Something like a boy scout giraffe perhaps?

You know its bound to be good when the first reaction is “well, I don’t haaate it.”

You’ve experienced that right?

Your initial reaction is one of great hesitation, then after a second look to soak in the strangeness (why a boy scout giraffe?) it blossoms into something completely fantastic? Those kind of pieces are my absolute favorite. They’re the kind that always gets overlooked because they take your breath away and make you wonder why in the world this exists and then worm their way into your heart and make you feel like you cant go on living unless it’s in your life.

I’ve been having a hard time with the color scheme (do we go Classic Blue? Cubbies Blue and Red? Green and White? Southwesty Muted? Orange? Neutral?) this guy has lifted the foggy haze and now I know exactly what I want to do. We are going to go a desert-y i.e. terra cotta, rusty red, olive green, with a little bit of navy, and just a few really saturated jabs of color.

So our $25 boy scout giraffe saved the day! The guy at the consignment store said that they also had an elephant but we were a little too late. We have a lone trooper and we absolutely love him.
