Holy.

I will be the first to admit that I have been a lackluster thrifter for the last few months. Buying everything in sight for The Hoard Sale will do that to a girl. Not to mention summer, and The Nugs, I just needed to take a little break.

Hope you folks in St. George enjoyed the pickins, cause I am back.

I feel like the thrifting gods have missed me, as evidenced by the great things that I scored at the DI (Utah’s version of Goodwill) on Saturday.

Dish Holder $2.00, Footed Mid Century Enamel Bowl $3.00, Teacups $1.00 each

Tomato Suitcase $2.00, Ceramic Vase $1.00, White Bowl with Lid $2.00

This chair is one of my favorites ever!! I couldn’t believe that it was only $10. It has a little damage on one of the arms, and as soon as I figure out how to repair it I will let you guys know!

Ivie is going through a phase where she wants to know all about everything that I loved when I was her age. Saved By The Bell is topping our Netflix queue right now, with Full House a close second. So when we found these Trolls it was safe to say that we were both extremely excited about it.

Have you scored anything amazing recently? Pretty please hashtag it #colddeadfingers so that we can see it!!

The last few weeks Vintage Revivals has been full of the Epic Room Makeover Giveaway posts (Congrats again Kelsey!!) and you guys, I have been SUPER hard at work on my living room…(yes, I know Ivie’s room still isnt done, but its lots further along than I have revealed)

So basically what I am saying is that I need to get you guys semi up to speed so that I can start sharing the awesome crap that is going on here!!

Our story left off with these chairs.

I found them in Salt Lake, the price was good ($35 each) and I loved the shapes/arms. I was planning on painting the vinyl because the color was just too much like the orange couch, but I didn’t even get that far. In the living room they didn’t really seem super retro the way they look alone. They seemed really dated southwest. Which is fine, I still love them and have somewhere else to put them but they just couldn’t live in the living room.

I am not going to lie. I was bummed. And honestly what better way to drown your décor dilemma than a trip to Homegoods? While I was there the heavens parted and angels sang and a chair that I had seen weeks before and loved had suddenly duplicated.

The color is amazing and I love that they are leather (HELLO cleanabilty) the only reservation that I had was the price. They were $149 each and that is more than I usually spend. So I walked around the store and thought and thought and then I instagrammed it and asked everyone’s opinion. Because that’s what friends do right!?! I got a resounding yes so I did it. And you know what? I am SO glad that I did. They are PERFECT.

And for like 5 seconds can we discuss this instagram mystery?

That would be the coffee table. For $45.00. That is also perfect.

It so fun looking at these pictures because everything looks SO different now!! Cant wait so share the rest!

Love Your Guts, Mandi

I swore to myself up and down that I was NOT going to buy another chair that wasn’t part of a set. Well guess what? I lied. Technically I only lied twice since one of these chairs was free, so that makes it sort of ok right?

Having a few great chairs is the best way that I know of to make a room. It’s the perfect way to add some interest to the space without having to invest major money for a funky couch.

This first one is one that I just couldn’t pass up. It was $35 at the DI (Utah’s version of Goodwill). It’s a really deep teal (if you cant tell from the pictures) and is in really great condition. The leather is reallllly thick and heavy. Plus its TEAL! I mean sheesh, there is pretty much nothing I am obsessed with more right now than colored leather.

I got this sweet chair for free from my SIL. My MIL had bought it a few years ago from the DI (what can I say, thrifting runs deep in this family!) I LOVE the mid century style, and it is SO comfortable.

The one super bummer aspect is that the leather on the back is in not great shape. I actually think that when I am ready, I will take it to an upholsterer and see if he can match the leather on the front because its in great shape.

And last but not least check out this tufted beauty.

I bought this way back when I was working on Hailee’s Living Room. I wish that the velvet wasn’t in such craphole condition because I love the color to death.

Oh and it was only $10.00.

Have you bought anything fun lately?! Which chair is your fave?

Love Your Guts, Mandi

So this is simply a look at my awesome chair post.

Remember what it looked like just a few short days ago?

I found it at a consignment store and talked them down to $20.00.

I taped off all the edges of the wood so that I could paint

It got a coat of Krylon’s Classic Gray. I mean you can never go wrong with gray, right?

I used white duck cloth as my fabric. It’s a really thick canvas that I love SOOO much. You can buy it at Joanns. I think its $10.99 /yd so you will for sure want to use a coupon.

I used 4 yards on a chair this size.

I started by attaching it to the backside of the chair. I did not take the original fabric off the back and so I didn’t have a template for it. So I just put my huge piece of fabric on and started stapling… then I trimmed off all the excess

The back cushion was a little harder.

I took the old fabric off and used it as a pattern to cut the shapes and seamed the together.

The key to a professional looking upholstery job is to pull the fabric TIGHT. As tight as you can.

Same for the cute little arm cushions. TIGHT TIGHT TIGHT!

I found the coral fabric for the piping in the clearance seciton at Joanns too. I used the backside as the front because the front had this sparkly iridescent crap all over it. It was not awesome…

I used my hot glue gun to attach it and I cant believe how much it used! This chair took 12 yards of cording. Seriously. So my advice is to take the amount you would think and double it and add 2 yards. Cause it used a crapload.

Then as I was cutting out the cushion tragedy struck. I am normally pretty careful when I use my rotary cutter, because duck cloth is pretty thick and my blade was pretty dull (can you tell where this story is going?…)I was having a rough time cutting through the fabric and was pushing really hard and cut a HUGE chunck off of my pointer finger. Like a freakin CHUNK. It was disgusting to see it stuck to the blade. And it bled like a freaker. So there may or may not be some small blood drops on this particualr chair that I couldn’t get off. (If you have a great tip let me know!!)

You can see these other projects from my Master Bedroom. The sweet wall stencil, the coral mirrored dresser and the compass painted sisal rug, the table was first introduced in the 10 secrets from a Thrifting Goddess post and the awesome lamp had a Dr. 90210 experience.

Also I entered a contest with the always amazing True Value and I could use your good vibes to win! (Its also the reason that I signed up for Facebook) It is for $2,500 and I already have a houseful of projects to spend it on.

Yay! I am SOOO excited to do LWIFF today!!

Its been a loooong time since the last one and I have accumulated a ton of crap.

Mostly chairs.

My husband is not so excited about it but, whatev to him. Who needs to park in the garage anyway?

Lets start out with the Craigslist controversy chairs. If you missed my post Craigslist Etiquette is for Suckers you should go and read it, and read the comments. Tons of valid points from both sides.

What to know what I think?

This may shock some of you but yes, I do have morals.

Here are a few points I apparently need to address.

1. Etiquette is not for suckers, but it sure makes for an attention grabbing title. Truly would you have clicked over if the title said “Some Chairs I Like”?

2. IMHO the seller is the one that makes the call. Unless you have CASH IN HAND you never know what is going to come out of it. I have sold and bought many things on CL and you cant count your chicks before they hatch, just cause someone says they are going to come doesn’t mean that they really will, or that when they get there they are going to pay full price and not try and talk you down, especially when they have had a night to sleep on it. (there have been many a dresser that I never went to pick up).

3. The reason that I was feelin a little guilty is because I didn’t know if the 1st buyer was going to be able to match my offer. They were a little more than what I spend anyway and I automatically assume that everyone is in the same thrifting mode as I am. If I were in their shoes I don’t know if I COULD or would want to spend more than what they were listed for. Does that make sense?

4. How is offering a higher amount different than offering a lower one, which we all do? All that you are doing is telling the seller what you think their item is worth. It is up to them determine if your price is right.

5. This might be a stretch buuuuuut when I do a project thousands of people get ideas from it, that’s why you are here. So technically I guess you could say that I did it for you…(no stone throwing here please that was a J.O.K.E.)

That being said I am so glad that everyone shared their thoughts! This is what a community is, a bunch of awesome gals with their own opinions. I loved that no one was too rude or attacking (especially to each other) but still was able to share their POV. You guys rock my world!

Ok so back to the chairs.

$150.00 for all 4. The wood needs some work but I LOVE the green leather and it is in amazing condition. Which means…I cant wait to redesign my entire kitchen now!!! What do you think, were they worth it?

I found this awesome lady at an amazing store that I am going to share with you guys on monday.

I have decided that I am going to completely redo Ivie’s room. Say buh-bye to the tree mural and the original acid mirrors project) That’s where this chair’s awesomeness is going to live! 50 bones ps.

I bought this one at a consignment store for $20.00. Its getting a huge makeover and is going to be in my bedroom.

I have no clue where this one is going to go but it is SOOOO comfortable. I think in my sewing room/hoarders heaven. $15.00

I bought this wingback right before I left to Salt Lake Monday morning. $15.00 and I love how its sort of mini.

That is a lot of chairs huh?

Don’t judge me.

Ok now its your turn to show off your junk! Remember you can link up:

1. Crap you have found.

2. Junk you have made with Crap you have found.

3. Anything that you would consider Crap or Junk (in the most loving way of course!)

Lots of times I will see a pair that has one that is in perfect condition and the other one will look like it lived at Freddy Kruger’s house. So frustrating.

I have been on the hunt for one that was shredded for months and of course I could only find perfectly fine ones…

Anyways when I finally found this one I was SOOOO excited!

I mean how do these things happen?

Moving on.

First what you need to do is take off all of your upholstery. If the cushion is not immediately removable don’t worry there are screws underneath the back fabric under the chair.

This welting was stapled to the chair which makes for less sewing which I love!

Next its time to take all of the caning off. There is a long skinny piece that finishes it off and covers the staples that you will need to take off first.

Then you will need to pull out the staples that hold the caning in.

This is a very messy removal so I was glad that I did it outside.

Also somehow I don’t have a pic of the chair after the caning removal…not quite sure how that happened!

If you are going to paint this is the time to do so! On the Epic Room Makeover chair I painted it Krylon’s Emerald Green. It turned out the perfect shade of bright green.

Now for the really fun part.

I used black stripe upholstery webbing for the sides. You can get red stripe anywhere from Joann’s to Walmart but to get the black stripe you will need to get it from an upholstery supplier.

Start out by stapling strips of it vertically on your chair. Secure the top of it well but only put one staple in the bottom. (I tried it with the ends loose and it was easier to weave when the bottom is secure)

When you are stapling on the top make sure that it is as close to the groove as possible. I did mine right below it.

Don’t judge my fingernails.

Then you are going to start weaving pieces horizontally. Start on the BACK of the chair. Secure with 3-4 staples.

Tack the end with ONE staple below the groove.

On my second row I had to work in another vertical piece but it had to be woven and stapled one row at a time. See how I had to staple it under row 2 and staple it over row 3?

Once all of your rows are woven take you stapler and secure all of your webbing. Make sure you do this neatly and as close to your groove as possible because if the staples are too low they wont be covered by the nail head trim. Then I took a rotary cutter and rolled it inside the groove to trim all the excess.

Up next is the upholstery. Take your cushions apart.

Use your cushion fabric as a template so you know where to cut. I ALWAYS cut it extra big cause you can trim it off. And when you are tufting you need extra fabric.

Then I took my cushion and marked where the tufting buttons are supposed to go.

I had buttons covered at an upholstery shop (cause it is right down the street from my parents house and it was WAYYYY easier than doing it myself.) Most shops will charge you around $.40 a button. The buttons I used are like giant brads. You insert them through your fabric and cushion and then spread apart the metal prongs.

As you are doing it make sure its lining up right and tufting it with the same pressure.

Then you are going to put the wooden frame under your cushion and staple the fabric to it.

When you take the top cushion apart you will notice that there are 2 parts. The actual cushion and then a back piece that makes it so you cant see the back of the cushion.

Start with this part first. When you are stapling make sure your fabric is extra tight and smooth. When you have it stapled trim the extra.

When you are stapling your cushion on make sure that you shape the fabric around it before you staple. See how the sides have the fabric wrapped around it a little?

Trim it as close as you can, it will give you a much cleaner finished piece.

One of the cutest thing about this chair is the nailhead trim. I used the cheater version…don’t hate me. It is a long continuous piece. I bought it from DIY upholstery supply.

See the one with the hole? You put an actual nailhead in there… so instead of nailing every single nailhead in you are only nailing in every 5!! Saves SOO much time and its always straight!

Can you tell which ones are the “fakes”?

When you get to a corner cut your strip down so that the one with the hole is at the beginning and start again. If you have to fill a few spots with the real nailheads go right ahead!!

Almost done!!

To trim out the white cushions I used welting. Super easy to make and covers all your staples!

I used 1/2 inch welting. I cut my fabric into 2.5 inch strip.

Then using your zipper foot on your sewing machine sew in your cording.

Trim off the extra and bust out your glue gun! Glue your trim along the edge of your cushion

Put you bottom cushion on and you are DONEZO!
