The lighting around my desk as been evolving since conception. I mean, obviously you need lighting at a desk. And this is legitimately my work desk so it has to be functional AND freaking awesome.

I started off by falling in love with the industrial farmhouse light that I gave away in November. I loved the pop of color, I loved the industrial vibe it was giving and most of all I loved how it was off of the desk (freeing up more space!)

But alas…it was never meant to be mine.

Next up was the Color Pop Cord Lamp. I loved the exposed cord but the lamp was just too big for the desk,  I needed more space.

Moving on.

Most recently I had a old school desk lamp that I gold leaved a little (someone PLEASE take the gold leaf away from me before I have golden underwear)

Loved the shape, but I actually love it MORE in Ivie’s room and just like me, it cant be in two places at once.

Yesterday I hit up the DI (Utah’s version of Goodwill) and found this:

It was PERFECT!

This lamp had everything I loved in each of the other lamps combined into one fabulous package. Its like finding a man that looks like Ryan Gossling,  has the adoration and manners of Matthew Crowley,  the money of Bill Gates, and the personality of Jimmy Fallon.

Lets go over the happy checklist of perfection. Industrial Style? Check. Off The Desk? Check. Exposed Cording? Check. Vintage Desk Lamp vibe? Check.

Pretty fantastic find for $5.00 if I do say so myself!

Its.about.dang.time. That is ALL I have to say about this. This little makeover has taken me seemingly forever but it is DONE (for at least a few weeks…).

The starting point for my room designs aren’t the typical fabric swatches or pinterest boards. When I design a room the first thing I envision is how I want that room to FEEL when you walk into it. When you come into my house I want you to feel happy. Not just “oh I am happy to be away from my kids for 5 minutes” but the kind of happy that you are like “Man. There is something special about that place. Its like Disneyland but thriftier.” I want our house to feel comfortable and interesting  and inspiring. So that is what I started with. Happy, comfortable,  interesting, and inspiring, and of course my favorite feeling in the world, fearless. So as you are looking at this new room I hope these are the words that come to mind.

For those that are newish (welcome!) Court and I bought our house 3.5 years ago. It was a short sale that had been thrashed. Here are the MLS listing pictures…please enjoy.

Doesn’t that carpet make you want to get a tetanus shot? BLECH. But I loved it the second we walked in. (Please keep in mind this was a year before I started the blog and had ever tried to decorate anything…)

I found this picture last week of a Rockband Christmas Party that we were having about 5 months after we moved in.

Obviously we installed hardwood and repainted but that was about the extend of the fun.

Then after living room makeover #1 it looked like this:

Tons of work, tons learned, and I outgrew it really quickly. It was great, but I wanted it to be lighter and brighter and funner. I was sick of gray and white and yellow.

So this is what it looks like now.

I mean. Literally not the same house, except that it is. The original theme my friends coined was Santa Fe Brothel, because of the plans for Southwest+Gold+Velvet Couch. While the room has nods at Southwest happiness, its not as overwhelmingly ethnic as originally planned. And I am 100% ok with that.

It started out with the Orange Velvet Couch. After someone stole the Navy Chesterfield right out from under my Craiglisting nose, I knew I NEEDED something that was show stopping. One of my friends was selling it and I was happy to pay $300 to take it off her hands. The pillows are from Homegoods and Target.

I found the coffee table at Homegoods on major clearance for $50. All the knickknacks are thrifted or from Homegoods.

I went out on a limb with the giant heart string art but without it the room would absolutely not be the same. The other pictures are thrifted or custom (which we will be talking about soon!)

And of course the base for the entire thing is the Sharpie Wallpaper. It brings just the right amount of metallic in.

Miss Vicki the vintage Victrola stereo cabinet was thrifted and updated here and then updated again here.

I think this is the first time I have shown you guys a shot that shows my living room and my entryway.

Here is a picture looking into the Kitchen. I just painted the walls black and LOVE it (and I cant wait to share the tutorials for that space with you soon!!)

I moved the openwork cube pendant out of Dylan’s room and into the living room because I love it JUST that much. It needed to be shown off.

One of my favorite projects in this room is the floating industrial shelves. I changed them up from the original colorful staging to something a little more toned down but the process is still the same, so watch the video if you are struggling with staging.

Everything on these awesome shelves are thrifted, gifted, or lifted…and by lifted I mean stolen with permission from my Mother In Law. Literally everything except the Love Your Guts gold leaf art. If I had to add it up I would say the entire vignette cost this girl around $75. Not too shabby.

The floating shelf on the opposite side of the room is full of thrifted goodness as well. The art and the pink antler sheds are my favorites.

The desk was a Homegoods score that went against everything I believe in, but it is PERFECT right there. And I still cant believe that I found that huge map for $12.

So now I am going to shut up and just show you some more eye candy ok? Be right back.

I am in love with the entire thing so much the only way to describe it is with a big ol’ sigh.

I love that it feels collected, because it is.

I love that it feels like me, because it is.

I love that there will never be another room like this on the planet because everything was found and not just purchased.

It has taken me 2.5 years of decorating and writing almost every day to find a style that is MINE. And I wouldn’t change it for the world. Do I cringe when I see some of my old projects? Yes siree bob I do. But at the time they were perfect, because they made me comfortable with evolution.

I am pretty sure that there are few in this world as addicted to Thrifting as I. And I am also pretty sure that those at that same level are reading this right now. THRIFTERS UNITE!

If you remember (or maybe you don’t because you are new and awesome) I scored 3 awesome pieces of art when someone donated their cute granny’s house to my local DI (Utah’s version of Goodwill)). Piece #1 was the hand embroidered Crewel Folk Art done by a Miss Doris Parker that I reframed and hung in my hallway.

Piece #2 was the tropical birds made out of real feathers that I put on a gold leaf background and hung above my orange velvet couch.

Today my friend, you get to meet Piece #3…or should I say Pieces #3-9?

When I spotted these architectural sketches of English landmarks I may have gasped, bolted, and thrown a few elbows to get them…(don’t act like YOU have never done that.)  In all truthfulness they were just hanging out, overlooked and needing a savior. Luckily I was the woman for the job.

Ok so go with me on this one. You know how you find stuff and you are convinced that you HAVE to do something to it to make it your own? I have had my fair share of those experiences…take Vicki for example. She was amazing and I painted her, and then a year later saw the error of my ways. So I stripped her back to her original amazingness. For some reason I was compelled to change her. Well my friends, sometimes things are great just the way they are. They just need a perfect home.

(Enter perfect home stage left.)

I haven’t really shared this part of my living room with you yet, granted you have seen bits here and there,  but never the whole enchilada. I build the giant shelf (literally, its a GIANT at 10 feet long) all because I wanted some sort of a mantle (It is the exact same plans as the industrial modern floating shelves on the opposite side of the room, just enlarged FYI).

It is so great,  I mean I had big plans for it when I built it. Visions of all of the crap I could stick up there kept me up at night. And then I woke up from perfectly staged fantasy land and ran face first into reality… the thing was so huge that it dwarfed everything I tried to put on it.

SUUUUCK.

Until that lovely day at the DI that the clouds parted, angels sang Hallelujah and no one else in the store spotted the gold mine perched on the shelves. I found 6 pictures that perfectly stretched the width of said shelf.

Repeating pieces of art can make such a huge impact, even if individually they are not stars. Power in numbers people. Just like you should always buy lamps in pairs, you should always buy any grouping of art (as long as it didn’t come out of The Comfort Inn originally decorated in 1989. Please pass on those, mmmmkay?)

One of these pictures is fantastic, but 6 is downright mind blowing.

So do you want to know how much I spent?…They were originally priced at $1.75 each but because I was buying so many the cashier gave them to me for $1.00 each. (Please don’t throw things!)  Where in this world, other than a thrift store can you find something so freaking fantastic for $6.00? No where. Which brings us full circle in my thrift store addiction.

Ok now I want to know, are you a thrift store addict? What is your most prized score? (If you have a blog post about it leave the link in the comments so we can all come over and drool hard core.)

And there is one item of business. You guys know that I never ask anything from you (except for your undying love and devotion) but I have something really important I want to chat about. Nominations have started for Apartment Therapy’s 2013 Homies (which is like the Oscars of blogland.)  Last year Vintage Revivals made it into the Top 6 Best DIY Blogs and I was SHOCKED. Well this year I would really love to win. Yo yo! You guys, my living room is literally 98% done. I have one small project to finish and then dun dun dun dun DONE!

So all you ladies out there know what a huge difference mascara makes to your over all finished makeup routine right? (and even better than mascara are fake eyelashes)  This project is like that. You don’t know what you are missing until you look naked (or your room looks naked) without it.

Today we are talking window trim, and more specifically black window trim. I know it may seem a bit well, black, but it made the HUGEST difference in my living room. Here is the before and after:

This project LITERALLY took me one morning to do (because that is all the time I had!)  Its actually a fun story. At 10:00 I got an email from Laura. She co-owns Southern Utah Bride magazine, check it out if you need any sort of inspiration, they are so fantastic. They were doing a mid century photo shoot the next day and their location had fallen through. So naturally with my famous orange couch she thought of me. There is nothing like a quick deadline to get me moving. I had been playing around with the idea of framing out the windows since we took out that awful beam and put black moulding up in our hallway. So my BFF Hailee came over and helped me get the job done. I have no idea what I would do without that girl. She is my Justin Beiber to a screaming teenager. You can check out the photo shoot here.

And because of the crazy rush I didn’t take any pictures. So if you are wanting a tutorial you will have to wait a bit (because I am doing it in my kitchen too!!)

Painting high contrast trim is such a great pick me up  if your room is feeling a little stagnant. Its like the best set of falsies you can buy.

I am so IN LOVE with today’s project I want to lick my wall. Remember last week when we chatted about overcoming a major project/idea fail? This post is what I like to call redemption. Or DIY Custom Wallpaper…without the paper, or the cost, or the mess for that matter.

For those that are new here is a quick recap. In my living room I was itching for Southwest/Tribal inspiration. The original plan didnt work out the way I wanted so I left the walls white. There is nothing better to brighten a room than white walls. I had fallen in love with the white, I didnt want to give it up. Now I have the best of both worlds (sing that in your best Miley Cyrus voice for full effect…)

So great right?!! Here is the best part. The entire project cost $8.00! I mean that is like 2 happy meals!! If you are overwhelmed by stenciling,  wallpaper is too expensive  or want thinner lines that you can get with taping off stripes this project is PERFECT!

Here is what you need:

Yep, that’s it. A Sharpie paint pen and a straight edge. Make sure that you are getting a PAINT pen and not just a regular sharpie, and make sure that they are water based. Did you know that you can paint oil paint over latex but you cant paint latex over oil? We are using a water based pen for that very reason,  in the future if you want to paint over it you will be able to without re-priming your walls.

You can find water based paint pens at any craft store (I got mine at Michaels on sale for $2.50)  I used 3 for my wall.

I was inspired by this amazing wall I saw on Apartment Therapy:

I love how this wallpaper looks hand drawn and I love the huge scale of it. So I took what I loved and gave it my own twist with triangles.

Start by drawing your horizontal lines. Dont forget to use a level folks. My lines are 18” apart. When you are doing a project like this start at the ceiling and work your way down, that way you will end up with a full design at the top and the broken design at the bottom.

Now comes the fun part, the actual design. First you need to decide how large you want the base of your triangle to be. I wanted mine taller than wider so I decided on a 12” base. Find where your starting end is (against a wall or door frame) and alternate marking the full width of your base and 1/2 the width of your base on your horizontal lines.

There are 2 reasons you are doing this. It is setting the pattern and the spacing (so that the point of the triangle is in the center of the base).

Once you have your starting marks just measure the width of your base from then on (12”)  Lets say you want your triangles to be 8” at the base, you would mark (going down your horizontal lines) at 4”, 8”, 4”, 8”. And then mark every 8” from those starting points. Got it?

Now channel your inner 1st grader and using your straight edge connect the dots!

Here are a few tips for working with metallic paint pens.

1. You have to shake them constantly, what ever it is that makes it metallic looking seems to settle on the bottom.

2. If it seems like the pen is drying out depress it onto a piece of paper and that will fill the felt tip again.

3. The paint dries very quickly, but make sure that the line is dry before you cover it with your straight edge because if its not it can smear.

4. If you flub a line you will have to repaint it and then go again,  you cant wipe the paint pen off without getting a big yellowish smear.

The best part is that you can do a million combinations of patterns and colors . What about a charcoal wall (like the one I did in the $150 room makeover) with white lines? Amazing.

To do the entire wall in my living room I spend 3 hours drawing, which is WAY less time than it takes to stencil, wallpaper, tape, or paint. This project is perfect if you just need a little spruce up in your house!

Do you know what kind of lights are a little hard to enjoy? Sconces. I mean, there are some great ones for sure, but (there is always a but) most of the ones that I really loved are SO expensive. Or they don’t have enough personality. Or I look at it and say “hmmmmm. I could make that myself.”

Today’s project falls in category #3.

After the hallway makeover started I knew I wanted to change out the lights. I pondered and pondered and pondered and could not come up with something that made my heart skip a beat. So I asked on FB what your favorite online lighting stores are, and ended up at Shades of Light (which is an AMAZING store BTW.)  and I fell in love with these convertible wall lights.

In fact they reminded me of these happy bowls that I had just scored at the thrift store that morning (.75 each)

So it was decided. I was going to track down a bowl (actually 2) to make a light out of. I hunted for a few days and found bowls of all shapes and sizes. It was impossible to find one that was footed and large enough, so I changed up my search a little. I ended up with these bamboo bowls from Target that were on CLEARANCE!! Bam.

To do this yourself you will need:
A Bowl
A Light Socket
Lamp Wire
An awesome light bulb. (I always get mine at Lowes.)

Start by drilling a small pilot hole into the center of your bowl. Then using a 1/4” drill bit drill the hole larger. The purposes of the pilot hole are 1. to make sure that it really is in the center of your bowl (that way if you flub it up you can re-drill) and 2. so that when you drill into the bowl with your larger bit you get a smooth clean hole and don’t need to worry about the wood splitting.

If you already have had a sconce on your wall then there should be a hanging bar with your old light. If not then you will need one. Your socket kit will come with a nipple that attaches to the bottom of your socket (you can see detailed pics on what this looks like here)  Splice your wire in with the wires that are in the wall with wire nuts, then attach your hanging bar.

Feed your wire through the hole in your bowl and attach the socket per the included instructions (or have your cute husband do it while you take pictures and he says “can I move now?”)

A light that has a visible light bulb screams for an Edison/Vintage style bulb. You can find them online or at your local Home Improvement store. They will run you about $8.00 each. The most important thing to remember is that it is part of the design. Don’t skimp on something so fantastic!

We all have them. Game changing (or should I say room changing) ideas that send your current decor into a tailspin that even Iceman cant pull out of. You want EVERYTHING different.

About a year ago this happened to me. I announced that I was redoing my living room and my main inspiration was Southwest.

This is what my living room looked like at that moment…not a bit of southwest to be found. I needed a change.

I had some pretty set ideas on what I wanted. The biggest thing that started the entire ball rolling was the plan to stencil my main wall with an awesome native triangle pattern. (Actually I dont know if stencil is technically the right word. I was going to stencil gold leaf adhesive to the wall and then gold leaf the pattern.)  In my mind this was SUCH a brilliant idea. I had THE BEST stencil company in the world Royal Design Studios custom make a stencil for my wall. (if you are thinking about stenciling you will 100% want to use theirs. I PROMISE. My current fave is their Rattan stencil)

It took me a while to get around to doing it and to make a long story short, it was not awesome. It was imopssible to tell where the adhesive was, the edges were far from a clean line and it took for.ev.ur. to do it. I even ordered some gold stencil creme to stencil the pattern on, but by that time I had come to love the plain white walls and wasnt quite sure I wanted to give them up. (I cant seem to find the pictures of the stencil but you can see it on the wall during this video)

So now that you are caught up, here is where I am today. I LOVE the way my living room is coming together. But I am sad that there isnt more tribal southwesty goodness going on. In fact all I have right now the is even remotely ethnic is my Aztec Chevron rug (made that name up, thankyousomuch),  this awesome pillow that I scored at Homegoods in AZ when I was working on Kelsey’s room, and the leather and sisal woven rug underneath the desk that goes against everything I believe in.

They are all graphic (which is the whole reason I chose southwest,  not because I am obsessed with peach, sea foam green and howling cartoon coyotes.) The problem is that there is just not ENOUGH.

So this week that is all changing.

I think I have figured out a way to rock the animal hide canoe a little… can’t wait to show you guys! Make sure you follow me on Instagram so that you can stay updated!!

So here are my tips to working through an idea fail.

1. Failure is not an option. Ever. Just because something isnt working out the way that it should doesnt mean that you should paint the wall and give up on it forever.

2. Step away for a bit. We all know the feeling. You have stared at that DANG wall/dresser/room for waaaaay to long,  its like when you have to keep writing the same word over and over and over and it gets to the point where you are asking yourself if those are in fact english letters and if it is still spelled correctly. Dont try to figure it out if you are frustrated, just give yourself a break.

3. Remember what inspired you in the first place. For me it was the graphic pattern that I loved. What was it that inspired you to get so excited you couldnt sleep? Make a list if you need to. Sometimes putting things on paper helps you narrow your focus.

4. Talk it through with someone that you trust. For me its my amazing Mother in Law. She is a perfect sounding board because she has great taste and really gets my need to push the envelope. Utilize your friends on Social Media,  listen to the ones that you trust and dont discount the ones that arent your cup of tea, it might trigger your inspiration somewhere down the line.

5. Get back on the horse!! Sometimes the only way to figure it out is through trial and error. So try try again!

Happy Monday! Holy moly you guys have blown me away with all of the comments on Blog Puberty post! I love you all and value your feedback more than you will ever know!!

If you remember last week I showed you an awesome thrift store art transformation with a vintage piece of Crewel Embroidery. I also mentioned in that post that I scored 3 pieces, so here is project dos.

I fell in love with this picture of 2 birds that are 100% made of feathers. (!)

As you can see it was in pretty rough shape (one of the birds had even fallen off of its painted perch!)  But for $2.00 there was just SO much character in those little guys, I couldn’t leave them behind!

For this project you will need gold leaf, a basic mini Ribba frame ($1.99 at Ikea) and something awesome to put on it (insert birds here)

Spray spray adhesive on the back of your frame. (I used spray adhesive vs. gold leaf adhesive because it was easier and once framed the gold leaf isn’t going to be manhandled at all.)  If you want your gold leaf super smooth and you are leafing a flat surface the EZ Peel leafing is AWESOME. I talk a little more about leafing here if you need more deets!

Then attach your awesome object. I used a touch of hot glue to stick my birds to the leafing.

Can we please have a moment of silence? Someone’s sweet granny’s house was cleaned out and donated to my local thrift store. They had NO IDEA the awesome treasures they were giving away…

I happily grabbed 3 different pieces of art and I cant wait to share with you how I transformed them to fit in with my decor.

So today we are starting with my favorite. $3.00 ladies and gentleman. $3.00. I cant even imagine the TIME that went into this piece. So thank you Doris Parker. You have made my week.

As you can see in the larger picture above the cobalt blue velvet is in rough shape (especially around the edges), and the frame wasnt quite was I was looking for. Sometimes its good when things look like they came from the Thrift Store and sometimes notsomuch. This was the case of the latter.

I have had a picture hanging in my hallway since the overhaul and while I LOVE the frame and the mat the trellis pattern is a little to mass producey for me.

Lots of things have almost lived there but nothing was the perfect renter. Until Miss Parkers art moved in to the neighborhood.

I VERY carefully removed it from the old frame (it was professionally mounted and had about 100000 teeny nails holding it in.) which was fun.

I decided which part of the design was my favorite (that cute bird) and carefully folded it around the board (I didnt cut it down, just folded the unused design into the back) taped it in and tada! Instant art!

I cant even begin to understand how dear Doris did these flowers:

Thank you SO much for all of your awesome comments on my post  about how to build your own shelving! You guys rock my world! As fun as it is to build them, what’s the point if you don’t know how to decorate them?! Its pretty much pointless. Tons of the questions/comments were about how I staged them so I wont keep you waiting any longer!!

Now, you should know I am going to say the word shelves a lot. And instead of making it a drinking game with alcohol I though it would be great if every time you hear the word shelves you eat a handful of Bran. (Because its SO good for you!!)

Shelves. (just thought I would get the party started.)

My Mother in Law is AMAZING at creating vignettes and so every time I have a chance to learn at the master’s feet I am ALL over it. Sometime soon I am going to be giving you a tour of her house that Court has been working on remodeling since the beginning of the summer. It is MIND BLOWING. So heads up on that.

We are going to have a middle school flashback. Just like in school we are going to watch the video and then discuss.

Tip #1 Start with Books! Books are not only space fillers, they are visual fillers too. They are cute and fun but they will probably never be the star of the show, unless all you had was books,  Then they would totally be the star. I LOVE decorating with interesting books from the thrift store,  they are pretty much on every flat surface of my home. You can stand them up, lay them flat, have the spines facing in or out, rip the covers off for a old school feel, bind them together with twine, perch them at a perfect angle. There SO many options friends. Books are a staple.

You can find funky readers digest books for as cheap as $.25 (hit up estate sales for great prices, old people LOVE Readers Digest Condensed books) the going rate at our thrift store is $2.00 for hardbacks. Is it the same where you live?

Tip #2 Add large visually weighty things next. This is where large things like the globe or the art or the xylophone come in. I am OBSESSED with that colorful piece of art. I found it at the DI (Utah’s version of Goodwill) for $2 and I think I will keep it forever. The xylophone is the item that gets the most attention, I found that for $4 and I LOVE the colors in it.

Tip #3 Its time to add all of the small details. These are the things that bring so much character to the space. You know, the things that make you step in and look closer. I love using vases, animals, plants etc..

I have found that when I am doing something as huge as an entire wall of shelves, that instead of running all over my house looking for things to use it helps save time and energy to gather my entire hoard on one surface and shop it. When I do this I never regret it.

Did you know that everything except the pink and red love silhouette, the wood and brass antelope, and the succulent inside the fish bowl came from the thrift store? I know! See in situations like this it pays to be a hoarder!!
