Sometimes fun architectural details in your home are the hardest things to decorate. I know when we were shopping for our house every nook and alcove I was immediately drawn to. It adds character right?! In the end though sometimes these spaces are really complicated to decorate.

In Hailee’s Living Room Makeover we encountered this exact situation. And this is what we did.

Before it was plain Jane.

The only thing going for it was that there was a can light inside.

“But Mandi…” you may be saying, “… I can’t change out a can light fixture, the hole is WAY too big for anything else to be able to fit there!”

The secret to getting a can light turned into a pedant light is SOOOO freakishly easy you might want to kiss me.

Did you know that you an buy a Can Light Convertor at Home Depot? It is a kit that turns a can light into something else!

I don’t have during installment pictures seeing as how Hailee’s husband is an electrician and had it installed before I could get my camera…

But the after looks like this:

Now on to the fixture.

Found it at the DI (Utah’s Version of Goodwill) for $5.00. It was one of those heavens parting, angels singing type moments.

I knew that we wanted a schoolhouse light.

Home Depot only sells the globes. ($5.00 BTW!)

So, that meant that we had to find something that hung down and held the globe. Which we could not find ANYWHERE.

So after hunting (and lets be honest, silently praying) we found this fellow in the back corner of the lighting shelves. I think I might have screeched in excitement….

Clearly some DIYer had already gotten to it seeing as how it was painted and glazed. So I started to paint it. I used Tempo Teal from Sherwin-Williams (one of the 5 best teals ever…the other 4 are also from Sherwin-Williams #truestory) and then glazed it.

I LOVE how it fills the space without overwhelming it and I love how much character it gives with its vintage schoolhouse feel.

You can tell Mark is a legit electrician because he never looses his pencil.

Sometimes when you sand a whole bunch of stuff your hair turns gray…

So what’s a girl to do?

I know! Put on an awesome wig and hit up the thrift store.

Small children running by paint happens constantly.

The following pictures represent THE WORST NIGHT EVER of the makeover. Hailee and I spend the entire day taping everything off because someone was going to come and spray the board and batten and the molding. Well at the last minute it fell through. Mark ran to the store at the last minute and bought a paint sprayer, and it was not awesome. This was at midnight. I think…I cant really remember as I have blocked this memory from my mind forever.

And the best part is that there were 7 people that needed to eat, so this is what we pulled out of Hailee’s fridge at the end of the first week. Yum.

But in the end it was TOTALLY worth it.

Is there any easier way to update a rug than with a little paint?! I think not! This is also one of YOUR fave projects from Hailee’s Makeover.

The reason that its taken me so long to post it is because the stencil for it was originally one of a kind custom. But Melanie from Royal Design Studio and I decided that we love you guys lots and wanted you to have the chance to make something awesome with Houndstooth too. Sooooooo I had to wait to post this project until you could buy it!!

You can buy it here for only $39.00 and make sure to use the code VINTAGE10 to get 10% off!

First things first, you need a rug. The one that I used is from Ikea. It is an 8×10 sisal rug and will run you about $120. I measured the width of the stencil and marked with painters tape where each row needed to line up. If you look closely in the picture below you can see the little blue dots. By doing this you can get your stencil centered on the rug.

I used about 5 big bottles of Americana Snow White. Trust me, its better to buy a bunch before your start your project then to have to run to the store in the middle of it….

Then its time to start stenciling. We used stencil brushes to stipple the paint onto the rug. One trick that I learned (after I took this pic) is that if you mix a teeny bit of water in with the paint it will make it so that it spreads evenly and gets into all of the tiny woven cracks.

Use the markers on your stencil to line up the next row. And just like I do every time I talk about Royal Design Studios I am going to tell you how fantastic the quality of product that they put out is. The plastic that they use is different than other products that I have used and it is SO MUCH BETTTER! Trust.

So in the title of this post I am sure you have noticed that I called the rug Ombre. Its really hard to tell in the final pictures because it just looks like a shadow from the coffee table is being cast but in all actuality the pattern fades…its sort of fantastic.

To get this effect dilute your paint by 1/2 and stencil your next row.

Continue diluting it more and more until you get the level of color that you want. This is sort of a trial and error process but the good news is that if you make it too dark, or your stencil is splotchy you can use a spray bottle to dampen it and a towel to blot up the excess paint.

This is what it looked like when we were finished! Don’t you love it!?!

Once we were done and everything was dry the rug (I think because of the nature of the sisal) started to become wavy on the edges. If this happens to you it is a really easy fix. Use your painters tape to tape it down to the floor really well. Then get the edges wet with a spray bottle or cup of water (obviously make sure that your paint has had adequate time to dry) leave it for a day or so until you know that it is 100% dry and then take your tape of! If it is still wavy then you didn’t use enough water.

This easy window treatment is by far one of the most creative things that came out of Hailee’s Makeover. Regular curtain rods can be super boring. And lets face it, who doesn’t want a little nautical in their life? So my brain got thinking what a fun alternative could be. We needed something really long because her windows are mucho huge. When the idea for rope popped into my head the finished result was not the original plan. The original idea was to have two huge knots, one on each end. Which would have been cool but when the boat cleat idea was formed it was all over.

First things first you need your rope. You can get it at either Lowes or Home Depot. The one that Lowes has is a little rougher and a teeny bit thicker. We used about 15 feet for this window treatment.

You will also need to buy some really large eyehooks, a small plate and 2 washers for each part. The small plates don’t come with small holes drilled into them (to mount it to the wall), you will have to do that yourself. You can see the way they are assembled in the pic below.

Each eyehook got a coat of Oil Rubbed Bronze to make it look not so….industrial?

Because of the huge molding at Hailee’s we had to mount it directly to that. We made a hole large enough for the end of the eyehook to go (If you want you can cut down your eyehook but you will probably still need to accommodate the washer behind the plate).

Then we mounted the eyehook contraption to the wall. This is not regular sheet rock (I cant remember what Mark called it) If you are drilling into sheet rock make sure you use some kind of anchor or something to better secure your hook.

Then tie a huge fat knot into the end of your rope. You could try to do a cool one if you want. I just tied it…cause I am awesome like that.

For the curtains I got a giant drop cloth from Lowes and cut it into 1/4s. I used curtain clips to hand it on the rope. SUPER easy, anyone can do it.

The boat cleat was the hardest thing to track down. And by hard I mean not that hard, just a little calling around. But let me save you the trouble. You can find boat cleats at a Marine Shop. They usually have the size that we used in stock and if you want something larger they can order it for you. These ones were $15.00ish.

And there you go! Just wrap it around your cleat a few times until you get the look that you want. I also tied a knot a little further down the rope ad frayed the end to make it extra awesome.

This was the first project in Hailee’s Living Room Makeover. Open windows in a wall are HARD. Visually they take up SO much space and leave you unable to do anything to them. I mean really what are your options?

Stack junk at the bottom?

Um…..that’s about all that I could come up with.

So while I was “soaking in the essence” of Hailee’s room I knew that I wanted bookshelves somewhere….but where? It took me about 2.3 seconds to decide.

BOOYAH! In the totally waste of space window! Hot dang, you know you didn’t see that coming. (unless you saw the reveal post…then you knew this tutorial was coming…so um yup, this is awkward.) Moving on.

This is what it looked like before:

The first thing that you want to do is evenly divide your space. I knew that this needed to be broken into a 3×3 grid.

Measure out your spacing and secure brace pieces to hold your horizontal shelves. These pieces measured approximately 1x2x8. They were secured to the wall using small nails. If you are not using vertical pieces you will probably need something stronger but because our horizontal shelves were also braced vertically we didn’t worry about it.

Once you have both horizontal pieces in place you can measure and cut your vertical pieces. Makes sure you measure for each piece before you cut it. Then using wood glue and finishing nails to secure each piece.

If you have an arch like this don’t worry about the gaping between your wood and the arch, you can easily fill it in with wood filler. (Just make sure that it is stainable!)

Then once everything is installed it is time to lightly sand the corners to finish them.

And here it is, all prettied up and ready to stain!

Love it!

Such an easy project right!?! Total spent was around $30.00. It looks amazing and best of all made this gaping hole functional!

Ombre is HOT right now. I have been in love with it for a few months but haven’t had a project to use it on yet. This lampshade was the perfect project. And it is SUCH an easy, high impact DIY.

First things first. Get your lampshade and your yarn!

This is what the lamp looked like when we bought it from Restore for $49.00

Originally I wrapped the shade differently and it just didn’t look good. It looked striped and not awesome. So I started over with a change of plans.

You want to start by putting a little hot glue about 2” above the base of your shade. Start wrapping round and round and round.

To make it so that the yarn lines up gently push it down with your finger tips. When you get to the point that you are ready to incorporate your second color wrap it very loosely a few times around leaving large gaps.

Place your second color on with a little bit of hot glue. And don’t judge the fact that there is hot glue the entire way up the shade….

And here is the secret tip of the day…. Put your first color of yarn inside the shade so that you can wrap the second one without it getting tangled. You will wrap over the first color of yarn to hide it.

Wrap your second color in-between the first color. Then with your finger tips push them down so that they are all together tightly.

After you rotate the colors every other one for a few rows wrap the second color around a few times and then incorporate another row or 2 with the first color. (you can see in the below picture where I wrapped over the first color of yarn and then brought it back out)

When you are finished with the first color cut your yarn and glue the end in place. Then start wrapping the second color exclusively.

Repeat the blending technique with your third color. Remember to keep the yarn color you aren’t using inside your shade!

When you have finished wrapping the third color and have glued the end in place flip your shade over to finish the first color.

And then you are done! I am so proud of you!

The base of the lamp was sprayed with Krylon Dual in White Gloss. Dual is a perfect product to use for a project like this.

Hey hey! Ok so if I miss something that you wanted to know more info about PLEASE leave your question in the comments and I will answer it! You can see the original reveal post for Hailee’s Living Room here.

First lets get the paint colors out of the way. The white is Ultra Pure White. All paint companies have an ultra white base. That’s what you want to use. The grayish taupe is a color called Hopsack by Ralph Lauren. If you go to Home Depot they can still mix that color for you even though they no longer sell RL. The teal that was used in the hallway and on a few elements is called Tempo Teal from Sherwin Williams. Can I just pause this this thought and tell you that I love the employees at SW? They are SO knowledgeable. Plus they have the BEST Purdy stuff that you cant get anywhere else in St. George. I sort of want to do a post on just the Purdy section of their store.

Lets start with this shot:

The ceiling fan was purchased at Home Depot for around $250

The amazingly cute high gloss white end table was from Tj Maxx/Homegoods. Which lets face it is one of the greatest stores ever. If I am not thrifting that is my first stop because they have the eclectic randomness that a thrift store has…but new!

The picture frames were purchased at Roberts Crafts (you can also get them at Michaels) for $20.00 each. The maps inside are pages from an old atlas that I bought when I did Jessica’s Room Makeover.

The PVC Pipe Dresser was bought at a garage sale for $50.00. You can see the tutorial for that here. It was painted with Gloss White by Krylon.

The yellow lamps I had been hoarding in my garage for a few months. They were at the DI (Utah’s version of the Goodwill) for $8.00 each. They were originally gold and were painted Sun Yellow by Krylon. The drum shades are from Target.

The sisal rug is from Ikea. You can see another way I have changed up a boring sisal rug with my Compass Rose Stenciled Rug Tutorial. The houndstooth stencil was custom made by Royal Design Studio and will hopefully be available for purchase later this week!!! (I will keep you posted!)

The fabric for the white fur pillow was purchased from Joann’s. The multi colored medallion fabric is in the line Restoration by Studio E.

The chairs are from Pier 1. They were $169.99 each.

Every single one of these books, statues and tchosky are from the thrift store except the tall vase on the table (Pier 1 clearance $11.00) and the A OK hand (Tj Maxx $9.99).

The fabric used for the taupe pillow in this picture is from Hometown by Moda.

The little white end table was an awesome find at a local consignment shop.

The supplies for the curtains (Drop Cloth, Rope, Eyehooks) were purchased from Lowes and Home Depot. The rope cleats used to tie off the curtain rod can be purchased at a boat supply store.

The light in the corner was purchased at Restore for $49.00. The yarn that was used to cover the shade is from Roberts Crafts. It is made by Red Heart and the colors are Real Teal, Aruba Sea, and White.

The fabric on the pillows is from Joann’s.

The mirror was one that Hailee had on hand and it was painted Sun Yellow by Krylon.

This light fixture was found at the DI for $5.00. The school house globe is around $4.00 from Home Depot.

You can see the full tutorial on how to paint the hallway here. The lights were purchased at the DI and Restore and the basket/cages were found at Wal-Mart for $5.00 each. You can see a full tutorial on how to assemble them here (hanging basket chandelier)

If there is something that I missed let me know!

I don’t have the exact total back from Hailee yet but I am estimating we spend between $1500- $1800. Pretty amazing, right?!

Sometimes you need something that is unique and crazy awesome. While walking down the isles of my local home improvement warehouse the idea dawned on me. PVC Pipe Yo! You can TOTALLY update furniture with plumbing supplies!

This dresser was found at a garage sale for $50.00. It was SO solid and had recessed drawer fronts which are THE BEST kind to get. (you can see another way to update a dresser here). There was no way that Hailee and I were going to pass it up.

We had to take it apart to move it (cause it was flippin heavy and we were the brains AND the muscle of the operation.) and I never got it all back together for a good before shot.(Shame on me, I know) But from these pics you can see how the drawers looked originally.

We purchased an 8’ piece of PVC pipe that was 2” around. I believe it cost around $6.00

Hailee’s husband Mark got to it before I could (he is every DIYers dream, a guy that does projects BEFORE he is asked? Sheesh.)

Anyways, he marked every 1/2″ all the way down the pipe. And used a compound miter saw to cut each mark. It didn’t take as long as you might think.

To make sure that they were all even he cut on the inside of each line. With the width of the saw blade they were about 3/8” thick.

Before After

And then by some sort of Saturday morning miracle they fit perfectly in the drawer fronts. The last pieces had to be cut in 1/2 but that was it.

When you are cutting PVC with a saw there are A LOT of shavings. Like it might look like December in your garage. To make sure that the drawers are clear of them before you paint use a blow dryer to blow them all off.

The PVC fit so perfectly and tight in the fronts that we did not glue every single circle. We just put glue in a few spots to make sure that it stayed in place.

Once everything is place and cleaned and dry its time to paint!!!

First prime with Kilz Spray Primer. This piece has laminate on the top and sides so you need something that has great adhesion since there is no sanding involved.

One the primer is dry you are ready to spray paint!

I used Krylon’s Classic White in Gloss. When you use a primer like Kilz it tones down the gloss finish of spray paints. Normally its fine, but I wanted this piece to be high gloss white so I did a few extra coats to build up the gloss finish. I think we used 6 cans of spray paint on this entire piece.

And there you go! A SUPER cheap way to get an incredible piece of one of a kind furniture.

So I decided to give you a sneak peek into Hailee’s hallway. Pretty much this is one of my most favorite painting projects ever.

And it was super easy!

Start by measuring your stripes. I used a paint stir stick for all of the measurements. Literally all of them.

There was a lot of changing things up as we went. So for you to duplicate the end result you will just have to hold on tight. The pictures may seem out of order but it will turn out fine. Promise.

First you paint your base color:

Then you are going to take a level or a laser level and draw light pencil lines around the space.

After you do that its time to tape! I love the Edgelock tons. It had great adhesion.

One thing to remember that when you are taping off lines you need to put the tape on the inside of the lines that are going to be your wall color. That way your stripes will be the same.

Now for the chevron… Like I said earlier the idea evolved like it so often does here…

Mark the center of your stripe: (I did this with masking tape)

Then measure the distance that you want your zig to go and draw a line.

Start your tape at the top of one line and bring it down to the bottom of the next line (or visa versa)

Here is where we changed it up. See in the above pic how the points cross into the horizontal line? That is cause I was originally going to paint just the stripes teal, so in order for the chevrons that have points we had to move the horizontal tape.

To get a perfect point just use a razor blade. You cant tell I promise.

This is what it should look like when its done.

The secret to getting perfect lines is to paint your base color over the top of the tape. Works every time!

Here is what it looks like with the tape off of the taupe stripe and still on the teal stripe:

Peel while you paint is still wet and you will get cleaner lines!

And there you go!! Awesome project right!?

Hello friends! I feel like I have been gone all week! (Probably cause I have!) Hailey and I are workin like crazy ladies to get her living room makeover done…which might have migrated into her hallway last night….. Her husband Mark was REALLY excited about that.

So if you follow me on Facebook you know we ventured out yesterday as our alter egos Wanda (Hailey) and Sylvia (Me). Wanda and Sylvia originally appeared last year while making a back to school video for the PTA. They show up at lots of fun school events and TOTALLY rock everyones world.

So today we decided to head out and liven St. George up a little. Here is an afternoon in the life of Wanda and Sylvia:

Heading to the DI (Utah’s version of Goodwill).

Look at these lamps!!

Little Boy Blue and Little Bo Peep lamps. Pretty much amazing. I think that they are right at home in Wanda’s Camper.

Now you MUST tell me if people are like this at your thrift store. Its crazy what happens when they bring out new goods.

Plus there is some seriously awesome junk there:

We did pass on the lamps. I know you are disappointed. But these are the real scores that day:

Then after the DI we went to Walmart to get supplies for the days projects. Apparently Sylvia loves Krylon just as much as Mandi does…

Then the best part ever. We went to Durango’s (the restaurant that my hubs runs) went through the line, got our food, paid for it AND were sitting down eating for 5 minutes before Court recognized me. He literally looked directly at me 3 times and didn’t recognize me.

At. All.

Plus I also learned that I suck at keeping a straight face.

Have a wonderful weekend! Hopefully we will have a killer room to show you next post!!!
