Oh my goodness, where to begin!?

How about by saying thanks for all of the love on the living room reveal post?  You guys just make my entire life.

It is absolutely insane to me how these quick turnaround room makeovers always seem to work out.  Living in Southern Utah there are not a lot of resources for buying treasures.  I mean, the options are Target, Homegoods, and a few thrift/consignment stores. I don’t typically buy a lot of stuff online (something about seeing it in person and having a hard time remembering to ship things back if I don’t want them come to mind.)  But for this space I did a little more online shopping and I’m pretty happy about it!

The couch was found on Craigslist for $150 and reupholstered (a whole post about this process is coming this week).  In Utah there is a store called Downeast, they sell returns from really great brands like West Elm, PB, and Restoration Hardware. I don’t usually find a lot of stuff there, but a last minute trip landed me the coffee table and pendant light.  The coffee table (from WE) was a super great price (around $100) same goes for the light, it was just over $100.

The black leather side chairs are from a local consignment store called Urban Renewal.  It is the one place in town that really carefully curates the stuff that they sell, it is a great place for prints and loads of inspiration.  Normally their furniture is out of my price range but these super comfy guys were a huge score at $55 each. The off white rope pillow on the black chair is from Homegoods, they had a ton of different styles when I was last there.

The white and gray fringe pillow is made by Loloi.  I went to Vegas on the hunt for some fabric for a chair that I am reupholstering and found a couple of great pillows at Home Fabrics (this being one of them!) I have no idea where to send you guys to actually purchase it, some are sold on Urban Outfitters, but this one in particular is sold out on their site. 

The gray and red striped pillow is from CB2 (sold out).

The pink and red kilim pillow is from Urban Outfitters.  The giant cactus is a Peruvian Apple Cactus that I found at a local nursery for around $60.  The simple white planter is from Lowes.  Also, I just need to point out (because you can see it in this picture) when we bricked the wall we swapped out the regular outlet for one that has USB ports and it is AWESOME.

You can get all the dirty details on the Craigslist card catalog in this post.  The woven wall hanging was a consignment store find for around $30.  Lets just talk about the terra cotta vase for a second.  It is SO good.  And the best part is that its not actually terra cotta, it’s metal, so you don’t ever have to worry about that cute skinny arm breaking off.  The skeleton print was a happy accident that you can read about in this post.  Everything else was thrifted.

You can read all about the hanging light here, and how we rewired it here.  The family pictures.  Man I love those things so much.  We had them printed at Alphagraphics (if you are in St. George I HIGHLY recommend them, they are amazing to work with) I really wanted them printed on a canvas but with the room turnaround time we just couldn’t make it happen. 

The desk was a Homegoods find that you can read all about here (oh my gosh that post is so old!  Wahhhh! Dylan!  Be a little baby again!!!) I took out the colored drawer and moved the other one to the middle.  The rug was made with a paperclip.  You can find the tutorial for that one here.  Both planters are from Target (seafoam & white)

Love the marbled pillow from CB2.  The colors are a little brighter in real life than they seem online.

Tutorial for the copper shelves, and plexiglass calendar will be up on the blog soon!  I’m glad that you guys are as excited about those shelves as I am!  The large sisal rug is actually 2 of these guys from Target stitched together. When I originally ordered the patterned runner (WE clearance 70% off!) I was super excited, then when I got it, it looked so rinky dink in the entryway.  It needed to be twice as wide…oops.  So the sisals saved the day!  The rug is sold out, but they still have pillows with the same pattern on major clearance ($14.99!!!)

The little metal yellow wall pockets add some fun color and are $8.95!!  I feel like I need one on every surface of my life.  Including in my car.

I have to say, I feel like Home Depot is majorly stepping it up in the plant department lately.  They have so many great cacti and large succulents it makes my heart happy!

Most of the planters are from Target.  These little teeny dip bowls are the perfect size to pop a succulent into and they are only $1.99!

The slouchy linen basket is from Nate (I love him.) And just a heads up, there are a bunch of KILLER planters at Target in the garden section right now.

This is the second Loloi pillow that I found at Home Fabrics, but YAY! they sell them at UO and as a rug at West Elm!   Large woven basket is Nate, naturally.

All of the cactus prints will be available in the shop shortly! (until then there are lots of good ones!)

The living room. I feel like having images that live forever on the blog makes people think that what they see is the reality at all times.

You guys. How about a little reality check?

When the orange couch died we had to have some seating in there. So I moved the Laundry Couch out of my bedroom and into the living room. You know what a Laundry Couch is right? The place that you store all of your clean laundry? (Now that it is in the living room, we have a laundry floor.)

There are random chairs. No rug or coffee table. No art. No desk. The entire thing is just really depressing to look at. Amiright?

The obsession with living in a loft is what pulled me out of the funk. I think its a great idea before you rip everything out and start completely over to stop and look at the space and see what things you LOVE and keep those. Looking at the living room, the things that I loved were the black moulding around the windows. I feel pretty confident in changing everything else.

If you’ve been reading for a little while, you might remember the awesome Craigslist light that I had installed in Ashy’s room that was too little?

That cute light has haunted my dreams. I knew that it needed to be in the living room, but the problem was that we had cut the cord seriously short when we were hardwiring it to the ceiling. It is really easy to look at a light that has a less than ideal cord situation and feel like its not going to work, but the simple fact is that rewiring a light is one of the easiest projects you can tackle.

*One thing of note that will make you probably want to hurt puppies if you forget. When you are wiring a light with wire that already has an outlet on the end you have to work backwards. Start with the elements that are closet to the plug and work your way down to the socket…ie the chain will go on first, then the fixture loop, all the way down to the socket being last. If you miss a piece or forget to do this you’ll have to rewire your socket.

Lamp cord has 2 wires. The way to tell them apart is by the ridge on the outer edge of one. The smooth wire is Hot and will connect to the gold screw in your socket. The ridged wire is neutral and will connect to your silver screw.

Ok so have you guys ever used GE reveal® LED light bulbs? I never had, and I was sort of dumbfounded at the difference they made. They just make everything prettier. Seriously. I feel like I have totally been missing out my entire life not knowing about them!

Check out the difference. (Both of these light bulbs are 60W)

So not only is the GE reveal® light brighter, but can you see the color difference? All of the dark yellow tones are gone! You guys. This is like Photoshop in real life.

You guys. Have I got a story for you!

I’ve been on the hunt for a vintage leather couch for what seems like my whole dang life. The search was kicked into overdrive when the orange couch was moved into the storage unit. 2 weeks ago an ad popped up in the nearby area section of Craigslist (you guys have seen that right? When you have a specific search typed in it will pull things from the Craigslist in surrounding areas)

This was the listing:

It was one of those running around the living room screaming moments because I have not found another colored vintage leather chesterfield since this horrible tragedy in ‘12.

The problem was that it was located in Bullhead City AZ (about 4 hours south from where I live). I contacted the seller and told him that we would be in Vegas in 2 weeks and asked him if he would be willing to hold them for me. (It never hurts to ask!)  He said that he couldn’t, and the reality was that I couldn’t make it down there to get them, so I had to have a broken heart about it.

THEN last Friday I sent him a text (because the time had come for our Vegas trip) and asked if they were still available.

THEY WERE!!

What??!? WHY?!? EEEEEEE! (That was what I was thinking). I asked him if he would be willing to go down on the price (because you always do that) and he said to make an offer. So I was like “How about $250?” and he said yes! HOLY MOTHER OF ALL THINGS THAT ARE HAPPY AND JOYFUL AND FULL OF JOYFULLNESS!!!

So Court and I ventured out in the wee morning hours to take the trip for the couches.

You guys. They are so good.

The only issue that they have is that the big couch has 2 buttons that are coming out. You can bet that I will be figuring out a way to fix it (even if that means taking it to an upholsterer). And lets be honest, for $250 I wouldn’t have cared if there was a possum family living inside.

But, the story doesn’t end there…also, don’t hate me ok?

When I say this post has been a long time in the making that is an understatement. The type of understatement that would be along the lines of saying that Thin Mints are just a good cookie.

I have to say that I am pretty much the luckiest girl in the world when it comes to my in-laws. This blog would literally not be in existence without the encouragement and listening ear of my wonderful Mother In Law (you have met her briefly in this staging video). She has got fantastic taste and loves all things thrifted as much as I do. Its sort of like having a best friend that you trade clothes and makeup with, except we trade furniture.

Every summer when school is out, Court is enlisted in a big summer project. After years of talking about all of the things that we wanted to do to her kitchen/living room it finally came to fruition last July.

This is what her living room looked like before (I seem to have lost some of my pictures in the great computer crash of 2012, so you will have to work with what I got.)

Yes my friends we took out a wall, and I cant wait to show you the kitchen tomorrow!! But lets chat all things living room today.

While my MIL is thriftier than most she doesn’t take it to the same extreme that I do.

The first thing they did after taking out the wall was put in engineered hardwood. Isn’t it so beautiful?

The walls got coat of paint (the dark color is Iron Ore by Sherwin Williams and the same color that I used in the $150 room makeover)

The couch, rug, chandelier, and chairs are from Homegoods (love me a good Homegoods score!)

The shelves are from World Market and staged with awesome thrift store scores.

This brass and wood table is to this day one of our favorite consignment store scores,  if I remember correctly it was $25.

If you are a VR super fan you may remember this dresser I blogged about a year ago. I scored it at the DI for $50 and 10 minutes at my house and a quick Google search later, I found out that this Drexel Parallel chest of drawers was selling on eBay for $895.00. The best part? A few months later I found the mate for $60.00!

This is the part where I stop talking and show the eye candy.

Its.about.dang.time. That is ALL I have to say about this. This little makeover has taken me seemingly forever but it is DONE (for at least a few weeks…).

The starting point for my room designs aren’t the typical fabric swatches or pinterest boards. When I design a room the first thing I envision is how I want that room to FEEL when you walk into it. When you come into my house I want you to feel happy. Not just “oh I am happy to be away from my kids for 5 minutes” but the kind of happy that you are like “Man. There is something special about that place. Its like Disneyland but thriftier.” I want our house to feel comfortable and interesting  and inspiring. So that is what I started with. Happy, comfortable,  interesting, and inspiring, and of course my favorite feeling in the world, fearless. So as you are looking at this new room I hope these are the words that come to mind.

For those that are newish (welcome!) Court and I bought our house 3.5 years ago. It was a short sale that had been thrashed. Here are the MLS listing pictures…please enjoy.

Doesn’t that carpet make you want to get a tetanus shot? BLECH. But I loved it the second we walked in. (Please keep in mind this was a year before I started the blog and had ever tried to decorate anything…)

I found this picture last week of a Rockband Christmas Party that we were having about 5 months after we moved in.

Obviously we installed hardwood and repainted but that was about the extend of the fun.

Then after living room makeover #1 it looked like this:

Tons of work, tons learned, and I outgrew it really quickly. It was great, but I wanted it to be lighter and brighter and funner. I was sick of gray and white and yellow.

So this is what it looks like now.

I mean. Literally not the same house, except that it is. The original theme my friends coined was Santa Fe Brothel, because of the plans for Southwest+Gold+Velvet Couch. While the room has nods at Southwest happiness, its not as overwhelmingly ethnic as originally planned. And I am 100% ok with that.

It started out with the Orange Velvet Couch. After someone stole the Navy Chesterfield right out from under my Craiglisting nose, I knew I NEEDED something that was show stopping. One of my friends was selling it and I was happy to pay $300 to take it off her hands. The pillows are from Homegoods and Target.

I found the coffee table at Homegoods on major clearance for $50. All the knickknacks are thrifted or from Homegoods.

I went out on a limb with the giant heart string art but without it the room would absolutely not be the same. The other pictures are thrifted or custom (which we will be talking about soon!)

And of course the base for the entire thing is the Sharpie Wallpaper. It brings just the right amount of metallic in.

Miss Vicki the vintage Victrola stereo cabinet was thrifted and updated here and then updated again here.

I think this is the first time I have shown you guys a shot that shows my living room and my entryway.

Here is a picture looking into the Kitchen. I just painted the walls black and LOVE it (and I cant wait to share the tutorials for that space with you soon!!)

I moved the openwork cube pendant out of Dylan’s room and into the living room because I love it JUST that much. It needed to be shown off.

One of my favorite projects in this room is the floating industrial shelves. I changed them up from the original colorful staging to something a little more toned down but the process is still the same, so watch the video if you are struggling with staging.

Everything on these awesome shelves are thrifted, gifted, or lifted…and by lifted I mean stolen with permission from my Mother In Law. Literally everything except the Love Your Guts gold leaf art. If I had to add it up I would say the entire vignette cost this girl around $75. Not too shabby.

The floating shelf on the opposite side of the room is full of thrifted goodness as well. The art and the pink antler sheds are my favorites.

The desk was a Homegoods score that went against everything I believe in, but it is PERFECT right there. And I still cant believe that I found that huge map for $12.

So now I am going to shut up and just show you some more eye candy ok? Be right back.

I am in love with the entire thing so much the only way to describe it is with a big ol’ sigh.

I love that it feels collected, because it is.

I love that it feels like me, because it is.

I love that there will never be another room like this on the planet because everything was found and not just purchased.

It has taken me 2.5 years of decorating and writing almost every day to find a style that is MINE. And I wouldn’t change it for the world. Do I cringe when I see some of my old projects? Yes siree bob I do. But at the time they were perfect, because they made me comfortable with evolution.

Is there anything better in this world than a friend who understands you? Last week Miss All Things Thrifty and I had a project day. I showed up in my plaid pj’s from christmas 9 years ago and a DIYers signature no look messy bun. We solved the worlds problems, ate pizza, and planned planned planned. Then living in a smallish town, one thing lead to another and we found ourselves in a VERY uncomfortable situation.

Actually it was probably more uncomfortable for the other people shopping at Homegoods, considering our outfits.

You guys know how much I love this store,  it’s the hunt. I love the hunt.

So back to the story. We were walking and I was looking at something when Brooke comes up and says. “They have the most Mandilicious desk!” I broke out into a full sprint, because when something is described as Mandilicious by your BFF you can bet your hoard that it DOES NOT get better than that.

I was INSTANTLY obsessed.

So I instagramed/FBed a pic and walked the store to kill time until the comments started coming in. Because I really do care what you guys have to say! (well usually, but we will get to that in a second.)

There was probably a 90/10 split for those against the desk. And I was SUPER surprised! (You guys are usually such enablers!)  This desk was awesome. So I came to the conclusion that it was my picture, that you guys couldn’t tell how great it was.

And I bought it.

And I took it home. And guess what?

It has a perfect spot.

Remember this post I just shared with you about that awkward space in my super long living room?  Well I filled it with a small white chest and map, and it seemed fine. Until THE DESK moved in. Then I could see just how wrong I was about that little chest.

So I wanted to share how much this sweet desk has completed that lonely corner.

I had hung the industrial light to photograph it for my giveaway post and I just love it, so now I am on the hunt for something to put there.

So could I have made this desk? Probably

Could I have thrifted for the next 6 months to find something with the same vibe? Probably.

Would I have died without it? Probably. Oh wait. Probably not.

But I love it.

And sometimes you have to break your own rules.

I have had a change of heart (pun totally intended.)

I used to hate hearts and love in decor. Like groan, eye roll, pssssh, that is so lame,  hate. Because usually the lovey stuff you see is super cheesy and overdone “All because two people fell in love” anyone? (Sorry, if you have that in your house!)  But as of late they have started to grow on me (like my Family Heart Silhouette Art project with duct tape, and the line from Kelsey’s wedding song that we put on a gigantor canvas.)

So here is my take on it. If it is authentic to you and you puffy heart love it, then you are good. If you and 97 of your closest friends all have the same wooden sign in your bedroom then notsomuch.

We have discussed a few times that the walls in my house are super tall and its hard to find things to fill the space, (especially the space above my couch) with something cheap and awesome. So while I was on my lovefest kick I went for it. Court was NOT excited about this project. I mean really, what man would want a 3.5 ft heart in their living room. But as the saying in our house goes “Sorry, its happening.” Do you use that saying in your house too?

Guess what? I was right,  it turned out awesome!! Awesome enough that Court himself gave it the 2 thumbs up approval.

Want to make your own?

Time to get your supplies. I used a 1” piece of plywood (I bought a precut piece that was 4’x4’ and had it cut down to 3.5’x3.5). You will also need 1/2” brad nails (make sure they have a small head on them), something to evenly space your marks and a hammer.

Draw your outline. To make a perfect heart start by dividing your canvas into linear quarters. Mark the center line at the bottom and about 1/4 of the way down (this mark will determine how deep your heart is). Then mark the top of the quarter lines (the green ones) at the top (this will determine how high your heart is). Finally mark 1/4-1/3 of the way down on the edge of your canvas (this will determine where your heart starts to go in) then connect the dots!

Once you have your basic outline you are ready to mark where your nails are going to go. Ok so its time to get honest. Do you ever use things to DIY stuff because its nice and close and will work? (One time I puttied the gap on the inside trim of my windows with a butter knife. Shhh don’t tell HGTV!)  You know when you are all set, ready for a project to start it can be SUCH A PAIN to get back up and search for something, when in all actually something else will work just fine. Whose with me?!! (hopefully that was a roar I was hearing and not a groan…)   Well I did that and found the perfect spacer for my marks with a roll of 1” ScotchBlue!

Once you have marked all the way along your outline its time to start nailing! 4 even taps of the hammer sunk my nails in perfectly and evenly.

For my lettering I printed out Love using one of my fave fonts Bebas. I tried tracing it onto the board but found that it was easier to just nail right through the paper.

I wanted my board and nails white (that is why I nailed before I painted) so once everything was in place I gave it a few coats of white spray paint. Once your paint is dry its time to bring on the string!! You can find embroidery string everywhere from Walmart to your local craft store!

Start by tying a small knot around one of the nails and then go to town! Make sure you don’t cross over any of your letters and you are golden! I used 2 spools of brown string.

A  tip I have to make your letters stand out is to wrap around their perimeter a few times to darken the outline.

Now we have FINALLY gotten to the point in this post where I am about to reveal  one of my favorite secrets. How to get a PERFECT edge on your canvas/plywood. Are you ready!?

It is THE MOST frustrating thing in the world to get a project done and be doing the finishing touches and screw it up. Especially when you think its no big deal, right?!

There are few things we Gubler’s cant live without and ScotchBlue is for sure on that short list. Aside from the regular uses and unexpected uses that I shared with you today we use it for EVERYTHING. I came home from the store yesterday to this cute ScotchBlue Ballerina that Court made for Dylan. Please note the ballet slippers. And sorry ladies, he’s taken.

The never ending game of musical furniture that happens at this house is pretty epic. I mean,  its so good its down right joyful.

I have this spot in my living room that is sort of hard (not like “CRAP! What am I going to do here!?” hard  but you know, still a little complicated.)  My living room is twice as long as it is wide, which makes for interesting furniture placement. I made you a little diagram of the way the furniture is placed so you can see what I am talking about. The TV is mounted on the wall above Vicky. There is no where else to move it. So the furniture needs to be centered on that wall.

That leaves a really great space between the chair and the wall with windows that isn’t really used.

You have to sort of treat it like its own little area because anything that goes on that wall needs to be centered above the couch. Does that make sense? Cause it makes sense in my head.

So just like most of my good stories begin I was at the thrift store…(yes, I really do stop by most days. And no, I don’t always find stuff). I was making my rounds and stopped in the “big art” section and saw this incredible gallery wrapped map of Dixie National Forest. The best part is that it was only $12. Booyah.

Now back to the opening paragraph about musical furniture.

This little chest has lived in my hallway for the better part of a year. But since that has been totally overhauled (reveal next week!) I found something else to live there.

I love this little white guy because its not very deep, so it can sort of go anywhere. And anywhere it went. Right under the Dixie National Forest Map.

I love how its small enough that the map can drop down behind it and still be seen, but it doesn’t look strange.

Perfect fit! (well, for now anyways….)

The last few weeks Vintage Revivals has been full of the Epic Room Makeover Giveaway posts (Congrats again Kelsey!!) and you guys, I have been SUPER hard at work on my living room…(yes, I know Ivie’s room still isnt done, but its lots further along than I have revealed)

So basically what I am saying is that I need to get you guys semi up to speed so that I can start sharing the awesome crap that is going on here!!

Our story left off with these chairs.

I found them in Salt Lake, the price was good ($35 each) and I loved the shapes/arms. I was planning on painting the vinyl because the color was just too much like the orange couch, but I didn’t even get that far. In the living room they didn’t really seem super retro the way they look alone. They seemed really dated southwest. Which is fine, I still love them and have somewhere else to put them but they just couldn’t live in the living room.

I am not going to lie. I was bummed. And honestly what better way to drown your décor dilemma than a trip to Homegoods? While I was there the heavens parted and angels sang and a chair that I had seen weeks before and loved had suddenly duplicated.

The color is amazing and I love that they are leather (HELLO cleanabilty) the only reservation that I had was the price. They were $149 each and that is more than I usually spend. So I walked around the store and thought and thought and then I instagrammed it and asked everyone’s opinion. Because that’s what friends do right!?! I got a resounding yes so I did it. And you know what? I am SO glad that I did. They are PERFECT.

And for like 5 seconds can we discuss this instagram mystery?

One of the best ways to bring personality and interest into your décor is to use elements that you would never find together in reality and DIY your own awesome mash-up.

I found this awesome primitive raw wood bowl at Homegoods this weekend for $30 (I might have squealed a little!)  When you are decorating with something like this  you have to make sure that it doesn’t get TOO primitive…like I wouldn’t put bones inside it.

The opposite of primitive in my mind is the world we live in today. Full of technology and industry. I love these old lightbulbs, they are HUGE and I love the odd shape.

One of the best secrets when it comes to adding character is to ask yourself if YOU find it interesting. If the answer is yes then there is a fabulous chance that someone else will find it interesting also.

I paired them with a stack of old books that I found at the thrift store for $1.00 each and a cute brass apple (that is actually a bell) that I found for $2.00.
