Its ok, you weren’t the only one.

Today I am putting your wondering mind at ease with the reveal. Oh and totally setting a new trend. NBD. Jump on board now my friends, because these puppies are hard enough to get when everyone still thinks they are ug.

I feel like this post should start out with 2 things.

1. DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUN DUUUUUUUUN!

And 2. Finally.

I loved using colors from the same family so much in Dylan’s room that I had to give it a shot in my bedroom too. Luckily my boyfriend Sherwin Williams has direct access to my brain waves and tracking down the perfect Spearmint green was simple. (It is Eco Green BTW, and make sure you buy a sample pot because you wont need much!)

I love when you can take something that people give a sideways glance at and make it a show stopper. This is why I will forever be a thrift store addict. Its just so gratifying.

Paint dipping or color blocking (however you choose to phrase it) is a VERY simple technique with a ton of impact. If you are on the fence about painting a piece of furniture, maybe start here, it will give you a pop of color without having to commit to the entire thing.

If the piece is small enough you can actually pick it up and dip it in paint. If it is HUGE like my headboard?

Probably not the best idea.

So here is the cheater way to get the look without spending $5000 on a zillion gallons of paint to fill your bathtub.

Start by taping off where your paint line will end. I 100% recommend ScotchBlue Painter’s Tape for any taping needs, its my favie.

When you are painting something like Wicker, with all of its dips and grooves, you are not going to get a perfect paint line, your just not. But it is ok, because all of those dips and grooves are going to hide it. Press your ScotchBlue into all of the spots that you can reach. If you are taping off a flat surface, check out this post for my secret for PERFECT paint lines (its sort of life changing.)

As you are painting (especially on the paint line) start with your brush on the tape and brush away from it. If you are brushing toward the tape then you are likely shoving paint into all of the grooves that we are trying to avoid.

Once my paint was dry enough, I flipped the headboard over and painted the backside.

Remove your tape and grin at the fact that you are amazing.

To joint the 2 headboards together I used clear fishing line. A few readers gave the suggestion of binding them together with wicker strips. If I was planning on repainting the whole headboard, I TOTALLY would have done that, but because I was not planning on repainting the white, I McGyvered it a little.

So now that it is starting to come together a little bit more are you a believer? Or are you still on the fence (don’t worry, by the end of it the fence will be a distant memory…)

It is one for the ages.) For those unfamiliar with this tale, I bought a couch off of Craigslist with the sole purpose of cutting it apart to make pillows. Strange? Yes. Welcome to Vintage Revivals.

Did you know that if you make a pillow with leather on both sides it is the equivalent of laying down on a floatie? You know floaties like the orange things you put on kids arms while they are swimming? It will take an hour for all of the air to drain out of your pillow…and 2 days to fill back up.

I wanted my pillows to be really slouchy and a little saggy and really used looking. A floatation device was not a good look for this project.

This simple fact left me at a crossroads. I could try and match the fabric to the leather and fake it. Or I could embrace the change of plans… what do you think I did?

This is so much more than embracing. This is a full contact body hug, the kind that lasts 15 seconds too long… with a bit of uncomfortable breathing.

I was a little concerned with the whole sewing through leather thing. But with the right needles it was like buttah. They make needles just for this type of job. They are called Leather Needles. Mind Blown.

Start by literally skinning a couch. Leave the leather as intact as possible.

Cut roughly the size of your pillow out of the leather (you may have to piece it together, which makes it all the more awesome. FYI.

Fine tune your cut so that it is a perfect square. My pillow insert is euro size (26×26) AND I wanted it to be shluppy so I made it 29” square and allowed for a 1/2” seam.

Cut the contrasting fabric to the same dimensions. I LOVE using Duck Cloth for throw pillows. It is a really thick canvas that comes in about a billion colors at Joann’s. It usually runs $10.99 /yd, so use a 40% of coupon to save a bit of cash! You are also going to want to snag a coordinating zipper. Don’t be scared. Zippers are easy.

Place right sides together.

Turn your machine to the longest stitch length.

Sew your 2 pieces together with 1/2” seam allowance.

Press your seam open and for goodness sake, the leather has already been tanned, take care to not tan it more.

Pin your zipper facedown in place. Now, I am a rule breaker at heart and sometimes just cant bring myself to do things the right way. Feel free to pin your zipper the whole way down, or if you are a rebel looking for a cause you can pin it at the top like me.

Sew and backstitch over the upper part of your zipper a few times to tack in in place.

Now with your sides still separated sew down one side of the zipper and then the other. Make sure your zipper stays lined up with the center seam.

When both sides of your zipper are sewn in sew a horizontal stitch at the bottom of your zipper, just like you did at the top.

Now unpick the stitch between the leather and the canvas and TADA! There is your zipper! This is the best kind of magical surprises.

Line up the right sides together again, and stitch the remaining 3 sides. Unzip the zipper a little to get it started and the finish unzipping it when everything is in place.

For really sharp corners cut off the excess before you turn it right sides out.

Turn it right side out, clip your threads, stuff, and enjoy!

I actually made 3 of these cute guys for my bed, but couldn’t wait until my wicker headboard was done to show you how great they turned out.

So what do you think? Was it worth a couch dying?

Today instead of unveiling a new piece to the puzzle we are talking a step back and talking about one that is probably the most important one.

Painting over the stencil.

Yes. I know what you are thinking. All that hard work, how could I bear to do such a thing?! I have one simple answer. I love the process. It is so exciting for me when I get to try a new technique and unfortunately I don’t live in a house with a 1000 walls.

But back to the stencil covering.

Stenciling is all the rage and at one point some of you hot mamas are going to want to cover it up. So here are my tips.

Tip # 1 Buy a good quality paint. When I say good quality I mean GOOOOOOOOOOD. One of the reasons I LOVE Sherwin Williams is because their paint is the best. I know that it does what they say it will do. Up until probably December my favorite paint from their line was Super Paint. It has great coverage and is awesome. Since then I have exclusively been using Emerald. It is a No VOC latex base and it is my favorite. Favorite. Favorite.

The first time I used Emerald was on last years Epic Room Makeover. To be honest while we were painting it on, I wasn’t loving it. It didn’t look like it was covering well and I was really frustrated. After giving it time to dry, we were surprised at how well it did cover. Since then I have grown to love it more and more.

When I am painting I want to get it DONE. Why is it that we always minimize the actual paint process? You know, we are thinking, I’m going to paint the walls like it will take 3 seconds? (PLEASE tell me I am not the only one that does this!) And then you start painting and you are like “Hmmmm, I forgot how much time this actually takes. Suck.” That being said, the better the coverage, the less I have to paint, the happier I am.

When I painted Dylan’s Bulldog Wall it took 1 coat and a handful of touch up spots where my roller was too dry. I wanted to make out with the wall I was so happy about that. (Because remember I had to redo the room design?)

Covering the high contrast stencil in my bedroom was something that I thought could take up to 3 coats because 1. I chose not to prime it and 2. Its almost black and white.

Well guess what? It only took 2. AND this was before I learned the secret that adding more white to your base helps with coverage.

Tip# 2 Buy a lower sheen. Depending on the stencil that you used and the technique, there is a pretty good chance that you will have some build up formed along the edges. If it is really bad you can sand the entire wall down, but most likely you will be the only one that sees it. The lower your sheen of paint, the more camouflaged it is. I usually go with Matte or Satin.

The one fear with using a Matte paint is durability. It can be washed away easier if you are a scrubber. That is not the case with Emerald. If it can withstand the scrubbings it takes in Dylan’s room, it can withstand the freaking zombie apocalypse. (remember how she loves to draw on everything? Yes. that.)

Tip #3 Buy the right rollers. Did you know that there are certain types of rollers that you should use for different types of paint? Mind. Blown. when I discovered this. (Another reason why the guys at my local Sherwin Williams are fast becoming my best friends.) It makes such a big difference when you are using the right tools.

So there you have it. My 3 tips to painting over a stencil. Hope you guys have a fantastic day!

This post is a collab between myself and Sherwin Williams. I love and believe in the quality of their paint and will shout it from the rooftops until I die.

Earlier this summer (while I was shopping like a mad woman trying to get things ready for the Hoard Sale) I stumbled across this AWESOME rug. Being the first one at the sale that morning, no one else had had the chance to scoop it up.

I bought it for $150 and happily stored it in my garage until a few weeks ago. Before the wicker headboard took the fate of my bedroom design in its swirly hands, this rug is what I was planning on being the jumping off point.

I moved it in and put it under my Craigslist couch (read about that here) and was instantly disappointed. It was just SO big. You don’t realize when it is sitting in a driveway the actual size in the context of your house. Its like when you are starving and order extra food, you think you are going to eat it all, and you have every intention. But then 1/2 way in you realize that its just not going to happen. Now I am hungry.

I hate when size doesn’t translate in pictures. Ok picture this. The couch is just over 7 feet long and the rug is 10×8.5. It took up the ENTIRE area between the bottom of my bed and the couch and it was just visually overwhelming.

I think that is why it wasn’t my jumping off point. It is a BEAUTIFUL rug (that already has found a home at my Mother In Law’s) but it just wasn’t right for this spot.

But man, that is a good rug.

I have been loving the real time makeover journey with you guys, I hope you are loving it too! I am so excited to show you the first giant piece to this puzzle of granny awesomeness. The cornerstone if you will.

A few weeks ago I was running blog errands and stopped at the DI (Utah’s Version of Goodwill). While going through my normal rounds my eye was drawn to a pretty awesome/trashed wicker étagère. It was super swirly and I liked it, not enough to invest the $20 in it but still…it started the wheels turning.

If you know anything about me, it should be that I make design decisions very quickly. If I like something, I know right off the bat. And then the dominos are falling faster than I can explain and BAM the room design is done. So. During the 3 minute drive back to my house I came to the conclusion that I needed a swirly wicker headboard for my Master.

A quick google search when I got home confirmed that I did in fact need a swirly wicker headboard

After this post you are going to need one too.

Actually finding one? Complete divine intervention. This is one of those Life of Pi situations where its a crazy story but in the end you believe it, so God must be real.

Ready to be a believer?

Here are the things working against us.

1. My bed is king sized (most beds from that era are NOT).

2. Wicker is super fragile (frageeelay) and finding one intact after 30 years is about as hard as squeezing blood from a turnip.

3. I live in St. George UT, not Pensacola Florida.

4. I have NEVER seen one on Craigslist in all my Craigslist hunting days.

Of course the first place that I look is CL. Nothing. So I widen my search to include Vegas, Salt Lake, and Phoenix. Nothing. Not. One. Thing.

This was going to be harder than I thought.

I called my favorite second hand shop in St. George and put Diane on high alert for one. Then on a whim I called a consignment store that I never go to.

Guess what.

They had 2 twin size swirly wicker headboards. I am pretty sure I yelled in the phone “I WILL BE RIGHT THERE!”

I RAN out my front door (insert 15 minutes of hyperventilating and yelling at every red light) and raced into the store. The lady took one look at my crazed eyes and said “You must be Mandi.”

That’s what I like to call a first impression.

She then said she will be right back, they had them stored in a different place in the store. After about 10 minutes (insert more hyperventilating) she came back empty handed because, SHE COULDNT FIND THEM.

Do. You. Mind?

In my life at that exact moment, is the equivalent to finding El Dorado and forgetting to write down the GPS coordinates. It is just too much.

I feel tears welling up as she goes to check with another employee to see if they had sold. This headboard has dictated the design of the entire bedroom. I HAVE to have one.

Then like manna from heaven she walks out with them.

I KNOW! Do you have goosebumps? I know I did!

Apparently they had been put on the truck to go who knows where (she really didnt know). The truck was literally getting ready to drive away when she went back to ask about them. That is what I call minute to win it, because 2 more minutes and they would have been out of my life forever.

Now they are nestled snug in my garage, waiting for makeover Monday. Can you guess what I am going to do to them?

Pssst! My girl Emily at Jones Design Company is interviewing bloggers and giving away their favorite item! I am up today and IN LOVE with the prize I chose! Go over and check it out! The green monster is DONE. After having a paint flub last week I worked out the kinks and finally have all of the walls in my bedroom painted.

And glory glory do I LOVE IT. (Can you tell I am feeling a little patriotic today?) It is the exact shade that I was picturing in my mind when we set out on this real time makeover journey.

I was still concerned when I went back to Sherwin Williams that the color swatch (Country Squire) was too light so I had them mix in 75% of the white from the formula (instead of 100% of it). It TOTALLY helped with coverage and lightened it up just enough.

Please pardon this horribly grainy picture, but this is what it looked like at 1 am with both colors on the wall.

Not a huge difference but all the difference in the world.

Painting around the board and batten is always a fun task. Creating a smooth even finish on your boards is hands down the most important thing. It also makes the process really long and boring. But its worth it.

My trick? Use a roller with a really short nap when you are painting the boards. It reduces the amount of texture that you leave. I used one that had a 5/16” nap (the same length that I use when I painted the concrete floor.)

One other tip that I have is to go slow (gah! I know it is the worst.tip.ever.) but you will inevitably get build up on the edges of your boards and that will leave ridges and not look so cute. So in order to prevent that from happening, check the area after you roll it and smooth down any lumps.

Next stop? Curtains. And they are FANTASTIC.

A few months ago Jenny painted her guest room this SUPER dark teal called Bavarian Forest (in her pictures it looks more green than it actually is in real life) I loved how dramatic it turned out and stashed the uber dramatic green away in the very large and cluttered design file in my mind.

Fast forward to the bedroom makeover. I knew I wanted something dark on the wall behind my bed because of the fun headboard project I have in mind. My first thought was my go to dark gray that I have used here and here. It would be really great to mood up the room a little and let the headboard be the shinning star that it is.

After thinking about it for a while (approximately 5 minutes) I decided I needed something with more color. So my mind then went to a dark navy. Which I considered for a lot longer (approximately 10 minutes) and decided that navy wasnt right either.

Then I remembered the dark green that I had filed away so many months before. So I called my MIL (she is my sounding board when it comes to all things design) and she gave me the thumbs up.

I went to Sherwin Williams and had them custom mix a color for me. I took their darkest green (Country Squire)and had them take all of the white out of the formula to make it even darker.

Which created 2 problems.

1. When I woke up this morning my wall was almost black with a green tint.

And 2. The white sort of stabilizes the formula and helps with the coverage. Who knew? I am super excited to get the new formula up on the walls and see how it looks.

So I am pulling out the white flag on the painting post I mentioned on FB that I would have for you today.

I am heading to Sherwin as we speak to get the regular color with no modifications.

One thing is for sure. I am not giving up on the green.

I asked, you answered, and now we are embarking on a journey of sorts. Well, a journey for me because this is the opposite of the way that I usually do room reveals. I am going to attempt to show you in real time just what happens when I overhaul a space. Hold on to your hats, friends, because this is as close to TV magic as it gets.

Let me start off by saying that the beautiful precious souls that make up the other half of our loving family of 4 (that would be my daughters) are staying at their Grandma’s for a couple of weeks. Which means, I can project my ever lovin heart out and not need to stop unless I want to (yes, I just used project as a verb.) This fact alone is cause for a celebration of epic proportions.

Some of the posts will be tutorials, some will be shopping and craigslisting sneak peeks, some will be moments of frustration, but one thing is guaranteed. You will be along for the entire ride. The plan is to get the room done over the course of the next few weeks (I do have a few other posts to mix in with it).

But here is what I need from you.

I need your cheers, I need your feedback, I need you to make me feel like this is THE BEST THING EVER. Otherwise I might die. Posting in real time means no back up, its sort of like I am doing SkyWire, but in blog makeover form.

Ok lets pause that thought for a small heart to heart. When I started Vintage Revivals 3 years ago it was a COMPLETELY different world. There was no Pinterest. Which meant every shot did not need to be a money shot. You could post a picture of your dresser in your driveway and it was FINE. Now? Notsomuch. Everything needs to be staged and shot and vingetted till the cows come home. Its just the way it is.

SO. I am totally going outside my comfort zone posting JUST a painted wall. And nothing else.

Hives people. Hives.

I need your ooohs and ahhhs over a painted wall job. Mmmkay? Otherwise I just might go AWOL and pop up a few weeks later with an entire room full of projects and money shots.

Now comes the really fun part.

The Plans.

Do you remember 2 years ago when I announced that my living room was going Southwest and everyone thought I had inhaled too much spray paint?

For some reason you guys pictured this:

Also please enjoy the master bedroom:

When it actually turned out like this (and it admittedly a little less southwesty than planned because of the stencil fail, but was totally not going to turn out like the above.):

So here are the plans for my Master Bedroom.

This is what it looks like now…(on a good day)

The makeover plans include:

An uber dark green wall somewhere along the lines of Hunter Green. Did you cringe?

A swirly wicker headboard from 1978.

And roses.

All I have to say is…

And just like Mr. Nik Wallenda I am working without a safety net people. Hopefully I make it to the other side and not fall to my design death. But even if I do, its bound to be entertaining.

Also?

If I did fall to my design death, it would look a little something like this:

And yes, that picture was intentional, I just didnt think it would be THAT bad. 19 cycles of America’s Next Top Model did nothing for me.

The whole point of this? I hope that you are inspired by these daily doses of DIY and start tacking the projects in your home that are giving you the itch.
