It’s one of my favorite times of the year!! Sherwin-Williams National Painting Week is upon us and I think this year’s project is my favorite. Sherwin-Williams asked this year if I would pick a cause in my community as the recipient of my National Painting Week project. It could be a charity, a family in need, an organization, really anything or anyone to give a little bit of service to. I thought long and hard about it. I prayed about it. One day after chatting with Cara a light bulb turned on and I knew just what I wanted to do. The organization that I chose is Utah Foster Care. Having a friend go through the foster process has totally opened my eyes to it. I have so much respect for those that open their homes and transform the lives of countless children with their love.

The plan was to impact as many families as we could, so with the help of Utah Foster Care we chose 3 families in Southern Utah and built the world’s cutest playhouses for them.

I wanted each playhouse to be completely different, just like each family (don’t worry, I’ve got tutorials coming for each of them!) I love how each one turned out. It was so funny, when we were building them there was all of this worry that they would be too tiny but then I realized when I was a kid, we would have played with anything and LOVED it. I hope these cute kiddos feel the same way.

I’m emotional by nature but delivering these houses just about did me in. It was the best feeling in the world to share them with these families that are doing such great things.

The A-Frame house is giving off some serious vintage summer camp vibes, and how cute are those chairs?!

This little house went to the Solward’s. This sweet family, there are just not words. Just last month they adopted 4 siblings, bringing their grand total to 11 kiddos.

Their oldest daughter Lucinda submitted the sweetest letter (she’s the one right below Court in the picture above) just a heads up, you’re going to want a tissue.

What an incredible family!!

Up next is this modern hideaway.

This little hideaway is all about accenting the natural cedar with a solid grey. The color that I chose is called Mercury and its one of my new favorites. Its a little icy and so so good. The product that I used is SuperDeck and it is so cool, its definitely not your normal exterior paint. Its made specifically for outdoor surfaces like decking.

This house went to the Rohr family who have had 14 children come through their home, most of them under 10. Amazing!!

And last but certainly not least we’ve got this Sorbet Dream. I’m so grateful for Pottery Barn Kids for donating all of the adorable furniture for the houses. When I was in the store looking at colors I pulled out the Pottery Barn Kids palette and LOVED Alyssum and Osage Orange. They go so perfectly with the kitchen play set inside!

This house went to the Bates family, who in their 8 years of fostering have had 34 kids come into their home. Wow. Can you imagine the impact their love will have on the world?

There are a few tips that you will hear when it comes to thrifting furniture. 1. Check to make sure its sturdy. 2. Give it the smell test. 3. Always buy real wood.

Well guess what? As great and fine as those are sometimes that isn’t an option…especially when it comes to #3 on the list. Buying real wood. If you are in love with vintage furniture the chances are great that you will come across a piece or 99 made from laminate. Chances are that parts of your piece may be real wood, while other parts (like the top) are laminate. Its just the way things are. So does that mean that you should pass up your dream piece because its not real wood?

HECK NO.

Painting laminate is a totally doable DIY. You just have to know what the right products are for the job. (This is where I come in.)

I have tried every technique that pinterest can offer and I am so excited to tell you about the fail proof way to paint laminate.

One of the most popular tutorials on Vintage Revivals is this how to paint furniture post. I 1000% recommend using Pro Classic if you can. The only downside is that Pro-Classic doesn’t come in a deep base so if you want a darker color then you are sort of out of luck.

BUT. For National Painting Week I thought it would be perfect to kill 2 birds with one stone and show you the best way to paint laminate and what type of deep base paint I use to do it!

The color is a vibrant rich green called Arugula.

Ok so this is where I started.

Before I was able to do anything to this cute guy I needed to clean off this space age duct tape that was stuck to it. You guys, this is the kind of stuff that will take off your fingerprints…from your fingers…permanently. Goo Gone and other adhesive removers didn’t work so I pulled out my favorite paint stripper and gave it a good dousing.

Thankfully I was able to scrape the majority of the adhesive off after using that.

The first step to painting laminate is to give it a nice little sanding. Laminate typically has a hard shiny finish that makes it scratch resistant and durable. If you don’t give it a little texture then the paint and primer have nothing to stick to and will easily peel off. I used 150 grit sand paper on this part. You can see in the picture below that I didn’t sand off the laminate, just the surface of it.

Once everything is sanded, wipe it down with a damp rag to make sure that all of the dust is out of your life. If you don’t do this then you will have a situation on your hands.

Ok are you ready to have your life change? The secret to a durable long lasting finish on laminate is the primer that you use, specifically Sherwin-Williams Multi Purpose Primer. It is a bonding primer that basically sticks to anything and everything that you could ever want it to.

Use a Mohair roller to apply 2 thin coats to your piece (make sure that they are fully dry in between.)

Once they have had a few hours to completely dry, give it a light sanding with 220 grit sand paper.

Then wipe it down completely to get rid of any dust.

If you are using a color that can be mixed with a light or medium base, go with Pro-Classic. If you are using a color that needs a deep base you’ll want to use Sherwin-Williams All Surface Latex Enamel.

The Latex Enamel doesn’t lay down quite as easily as the Pro-Classic, to combat that we are using a dry time extender. This gives your paint more time to relax and level out before it dries, giving you a smoother finish.

Latex Enamel is amazing for its durability and has such a great finish.

I could not be happier with how this little guy turned out!

It’s HERE!! Today is the day that I FINALLY get to show off Macie’s bedroom overhaul! I am not good at keeping things secret and this doozie has been eating at me for months. The special occasion for a room makeover celebration? Well Sherwin-Williams National Painting Week of course! Last year I was assigned the color Pink and created Dylan’s Dream Room for my 4 year old daughter. This year my color was Green and I am pretty obsessed with how it turned out.

Last week I introduced you to my niece Macie. In short she is fantastic. Her bedroom? Um….welp, let’s just let the pictures speak for themselves.

What we have here is a room that has been transformed multiple times over the years. From an office, to a bedroom that all 4 of her younger siblings have enjoyed (hence the sharpie on the wall and the sticker residue on the door), to finally a room of her own.

Mace is a great kid and deserves this space to be wonderful.

So much better right!?

When I create a space I start with the feeling that I want to evoke when you walk into the room. The feeling that I repeatedly came back to for Macie’s room was Freedom. Close your eyes. Wait that wont work. Ok, keep your eyes open, but picture a sun-kissed girl at the beach,  she jumps into the back of an old army jeep and rides down a scenic two lane road laughing with her friends as the wind whips her hair around her face. Full of carefree light and the world at her fingertips. That kind of freedom.

The visual picture that I had in my mind while I was dreaming about this space was one that most of us have actually gone through. That moment when you are still at home, living with your parents, in a room that they originally decorated. Your thirst for new experiences and new thoughts, and finding out what makes you happy is something that pushes you unexplainably forward.

If you notice, the bones of the room have a very iconic 50’s vibe. The two tone doors, and the gold wood slice wall, even the blush nightstands, are polished and refined. Then like a wild flower in the middle of a manicured garden, all of the free spirited boho breathes life into it. I feel like this room visually describes what a teenager whose spirit cannot be contained feels like. It feels like a place where you can have the courage to hear your own voice. It feels like freedom.

Granted my teenage life was not that poetic, it consisted of expressing myself by singing NSYNC at the top of my lungs and skipping Spanish, but I mean, sort of the same thing…right?

We faced 3 main design culprits in the space.

1. The darkness. It was dark ya’ll. (Can I say ya’ll if I am from Utah?)  The taupe walls were not doing it any favors in that department. I painted the walls with my favorite white (Sherwin-Williams Ultra White Base with 4 oz of white pigment added for coverage.)

Dilemma #2. The carpet. Macie’s carpet is not bad. It is just a little harder to design around than a bare floor. Ripping the carpet out was a no-go and when you cant change something, the next best thing is avoidance right? So to immediately take your eyes off of the floor, I painted the ceiling with Sherwin-Williams Emerald in Secret Garden. It makes the ceiling look SO tall (it is 9 feet, so tall but not monstrous) and it is hands down my favorite dark olive green. So moody and perfect. I also put a really great rug down that I found for $99 on Rugs USA.

The nightstands are brass and leather campaign hacks on an Ikea Malm dressers (and I mean, of course they have leather,  do you know me at all?)

Can we just pause for a moment to kiss the macramé headboard on the mouth? It is everything that I dreamed of and totally doable. I wanted the macramé to be the star, but it needed a little bit of support to pull of such an amazing feat.

Love those wall mounted task lights? Guess what? They are SIMPLE. Like forehead slapping simple.

Mace needed a spot to get ready in the mornings. I hunted for days (which is a lot like months when you have 8 days to pull a room makeover together.)  Finally I found an old metal desk that had received a not-mandilicious paint job (I will show you soon). It got a quick overhaul with white and copper spray paint, and fit perfectly in the spot that it needed to live in.

Every room needs an amazing accent wall (can I get an amen?!)

Macie’s room was no exception. Guess what this wall treatment is made out of?

Wallpaper? Nope.

A stencil? Nada.

Painted by hand? Puleeze.

A custom stamp that I made with my Cricut Explore? Ding Ding Ding!

The gold metallic is metallic. It has so much shine that I had a really hard time capturing it without blowing out my picture.

The Tea Leaves art was inspired by my Gossip Girl binge in December. It is just so romantic. Chuck + Blair forever. I asked Jamie to design something and she came up with this beautiful piece. That girl is a genius.

The hanging lights are such a fun way to add a little bit of simple excitement to the corner. The DIY is really easy too. It is almost entirely made up from materials that can be sourced locally!

And of course we have to talk about the leather sling bench that was made from an upcycled leather sofa. It is just so good in here and solves our 3rd design dilemma. Having a place for friends to hang out. (Can you see the sheen from the gold paint?)

There are just so many fun details.

Tomorrow I am posting all of the sources and details, and then the tutorials begin with a HUGE giveaway! As I was writing this post I realized that aside from a few pillows and the rug,  everything else in this room was DIYed. I cannot wait to start sharing the projects with you guys!!

When I say that this is my favorite space that I have ever created, there is no exaggeration. I thought that I was ready to dust my hands off and walk away after my living room reveal, but I mean, how Mandilicious is that? Not Mandilicious at. all. folks. As I have mentioned before, creating a kids room that you both will enjoy can be super hard. If you let them be involved, you are guaranteed to end up with a few roadblocks…such as kangaroos (I mean, kangaroos? When she said that I giggled like an idiot for about 30 minutes.)  Here is the interview with Dylan, just so you guys who are new can see just how sparkly this little child is. (Just a warning, she is so sparkly that you will need sunscreen.)

When Sherwin Williams gave me the color Pink for National Painting Week the whole Dylan’s Dream Room process began. And just because I cant get enough of showing you guys the HORRIBLE condition of the house when we bought it (this is the MLS listing) here is the BEFORE before. Hope you have a tetanus shot.

Then the room went to this. This was one of the first rooms that I redid when I started Vintage Revivals almost 3 years ago.

And THEN (sheesh this is like the song that never ends!) I painted everything white. And it was great. But there was none of Dylan’s flair for life in this room at.all.

So now that you are up to speed I am THRILLED to show you how the room turned out. I worked for 3 weeks straight on this space (because I pretty much did it twice,  but that is another post for next week.) When you are creating a space for someone you love so much, its so easy to put your heart completely into it. I showed you the color palette Dylan picked out, and this is how we incorporated so many colors into one space.

Each color was used on the far right hexagon and then diluted with white paint to ombre it out (pretend that is a legit term ok folks?)

If you watched Dylan’s video you know that pink and puppies were the things that she talked about the very most. So how could I not make a pink puppy feature wall? We are hoping that with a guardian bulldog she will actually want to sleep in her room now…please pray.

The perfect bubble gum pink is called Pink Moment and I absolutely love it. The bulldog is carved out of thin cork board so that Miss Dyl has a memo board for all of her beautiful art projects.

The little vintage industrial desk was a $15 yard sale score and could not be more perfect. Its nice and tiny,  has a Formica wipe able surface, and lots of storage. It hits me about 4 inches above my knee, and I was a little concerned about finding a mini chair. So of course I went into my garage to see what I have hoarded (I have a disease, read more about it here) and found this little stool that came out of an old bank. The top cushion looked like it had been the shield for Michelangelo in his latest battle against his nemesis. It was shredded. Get it!? Shredder!!? Sometimes I think I am funny.

The coat hooks were made from copper tubing and mounted to the wall. Copper is such a great color and goes so well with this shade of pink. They aren’t fighting each other, even thought the colors are similar,  its like they are long lost BFFs!
