We hear a lot about how to do things the right way. Especially in the DIY world. The right way to paint, the right way to build, the right way to caulk, and a million other right ways.

But what happens if you dont do it the right way? What does it look like!? Does the universe implode?! Given that this is the year 2020, we should all make a group pact to not test it. Pinky promise!

Today we’re talking about the right and wrong way to paint a wall! If you love fail videos, this post is for you! I am taking all of my best paint tips and showing them side-by-side with what not to do. Cause sometimes you have to see what things look like when they’re wrong before you can fully appreciate when they’re right! A lot of these tips apply if you are using a roller/brush process vs. a paint sprayer. If you want tips on spraying check out this post!

Supplies

Raise your hand if you buy paint supplies based purely on price. The cheaper the better right? WRONG-O. The quality of your tools can drastically affect the finish of your paint job. And, it’s not always about price, it’s just about using the right tool.

Mistake# 1: Using The Wrong Roller Nap

The nap on a roller determines how long the length of the material is from the center core of the roller. Picking the right nap depends on the finish you want and the texture of your walls. The longer the nap, the more texture it adds!

Fix:

If you have smooth walls the goal is to keep them that way! I never go longer than 3/8″ nap on our smooth walls. 3/8″ is a sweet spot for coverage and minimal texture.

If you have textured walls you can compromise a little on the texture in favor of quicker coverage. The longer nap fills the negative space in the wall texture and helps with coverage. 1/2″ nap is great for orange peel and knock down wall texture. If you are painting brick or stucco, a super long nap like 1″-1 1/2″ will be your best friend!

Mistake #2: Using the Wrong Brush

One thing that you never never never want to cheap out on is a paint brush. Investing in a good brush will give you a significantly higher chance of a smooth, brushstroke- free finish.

I

Fix: Using a High Quality Brush

All of the above brushes have their uses, but my go to gold standard is a Purdy XL Glide.

Insider Tip: Are you using the right roller for your paint formula?

Buckle in cause I’m about to blow your mind. Did you know that your paint formula has a soulmate roller?! It’s TRUE!! There is a perfect pairing for each type of paint! There is an in-store char at your neighborhood Sherwin-Williams that will tell you exactly what combo is right for your project!!

Mistake #3: Not Re-Mixing Paint Before You Pour

Unless you are painting within a few hours of picking up your paint, always grab a few (free!) stir sticks. As paint settles there are a lot of things that happen.

Color Separation

Color pigments have different weights and will settle on the bottom of your paint can. If you don’t thoroughly mix it, then you’re setting yourself up for an uneven color on the walls! Some colors seem to settle more quickly than others (green is the worst offender IMHO!) Always shake your can or stir the paint before you start using it! Make sure if your paint has been hanging around a for a while that you purposefully scrape along the bottom of the can.

Sheen Finish Separation

When your paint is mixed, it’s not only incorporating the color pigments, it’s combining the sheen. The higher the gloss, the more separation happens! If you don’t do a through job mixing your sheen, you can end up with flashing (where dry paint has different sheen marks when light hits it, making it *flash* before your eyes) and it will make touch up a BEAST, because even if the color is correct, the sheen isn’t exactly the same.

Fix: Remixing Your Paint

Revisit your store: If your paint has been sitting for a while, you can always take it back into your neighborhood Sherwin-Williams store and have them re-shake it! If you are mixing it at home you’ve got a few options!

Shake it: Make sure your lid is on tightly and shake the can back and forth, alternating directions for at least 5 minutes. This is the cleanest way to mix your paint because there is no clean up but it also takes the longest!

Stir it: Using a stir stick, stir the paint for a minimum of 3 minutes. Make sure to pull the color from the bottom of the can by scraping it and pulling it up with the stick.

Blend it: There are really awesome paint stirrer drill attachments that make stirring paint quick and easy. Picture a kitchen beater, but bigger, and not for food. They work especially well if you are using 5-gallon buckets!

Mistake #4: Not Fully Loading the Roller = Paint Acne

The simple act of loading a new roller with paint is where things can easily and quickly go sideways. One of the biggest mistakes people make is that they don’t fully saturate it! What happens is they will load the surface, but underneath close to the core is still completely dry.

This is a problem because as the paint is being applied, the pressure on the roller forces the air trapped at the core to come to the surface and creates hundreds of tiny bubbles on the wall. Sometimes they pop leaving little craters in your paint, and sometimes they stay unbroken.

If you aren’t fully saturating the roller, you are creating the texture of an acne-ridden teenager’s face on your walls! Guys, that’s not the look we’re going for!

Look I, more than anyone, understand the excitement of getting that first swipe of paint up on the wall, but taking the time to saturate the roller will start you off on the right foot!

Roll it back and forth in the paint and on the roller tray until all of the bubbles are gone and the roller feels heavy. If you’re getting bubbles in your finish you need to roll it in the tray longer!

Mistake #5: Using the Wrong Amount of Paint

So now that we’ve talked about properly loading our roller, lets unpack how much paint you should be putting on the wall!

Mistake # 6: Using too much paint

you will have drips and sagging. Sagging is when a whole section creates sort of a giant drip. It doesn’t usually run the way a drip does, but it shifts and leaves a big wavy line. Using too much paint will extend drying time, which in my case extends the space between coats and my patience.

Mistake #7: Using too little paint

is actually the most counterproductive way to paint. Thin coats means that your coverage is as non-existent as a Tootsie Roll Egg in December. Without proper coverage, you are adding unnecessary work because you’ll not only have to do a second coat, but a third and maybe even a fourth. You are also adding texture! If paint dries before it has a chance to settle, the finish will have more texture. That’s a lot of time and effort committed to a sub-par paint job!

Fix: Using The Right Amount of Paint

The right amount of paint will let you paint a solid 3×3 square without running (too much) or spotting (too little). After your square is painted, reload the roller and go again. Work quickly and methodically and always work off the wet edge.

Watch for roller lines as you go. Roller lines are heavy trails of paint that are from the edges of the roller. They are usually unavoidable, but can be quickly and lightly feathered in by gently rolling in the opposite direction.

If you overlook some roller lines and notice them after you’ve moved on to another section, LEAVE THEM ALONE. Which brings me to our number 1 painting sin…

Mistake # 8: Overworking the Paint

If you hear nothing else today, hear this. OVERWORKING THE PAINT IS THE WORST THING YOU CAN DO. What does overworking the paint look like? Well friend, huddle in.

Once paint is exposed to air it’s like a ticking time bomb. The more surface area of the paint is exposed, the quicker it will dry right? Paint spread out on a wall will dry faster than an open gallon.

As you are rolling the paint, your time is ticking. Paint dries from the surface first. Which means you’ve got to get it on, and then leave it alone. Once the surface has started to dry, rolling back over it to fix a drip or a roller line, or add more coverage is doing more damage than good. You’re mixing all of the surface dried paint with the wet paint on the roller, and the wet paint underneath the surface. All that you’ll end up with is a big goopy texture-y mess.

It takes massive amounts of self-control and sometimes leaving the room (no shame in knowing your weaknesses! )

So what is the right technique?

When I’m painting a wall, I like to work in 3 foot squares. The reason is because I can really easily control the coverage and fix any imperfections before I’m off to a spot halfway across the room. Work quickly and off of the wet edge of your square.

Mistake #9: Not Waiting For The Paint to Dry Before You Re-Coat

As the paint starts to dry, the surface will change colors. The best indicator of when your wall is ready for a second coat is when the color is uniformly dry. If your paint looks splotchy and has an uneven color it’s not dry!

Ok friends, these are my best tips. Did you learn anything new!? Make sure if you are heading to your neighboorhood Sherwin-Williams store that you use the coupon below to save $15! You can use it as many times as you like!

P.S. The paint I used for this post is Sherwin-Williams Emerald Interior® in a Matte finish, in the color Verde Marron SW 9124

I can’t even begin to tell you how many emails I get from people that are renters, trying to figure out how to make their not permanent home their own (while still being able to get their security deposit back!) Renting is reality for everyone at one point or another. For me it involved no decor and a saggy slip covered hand me down denim couch. #reallife. So I teamed up with my friends at Rent.com for a fun (and renter friendly!) tutorial.

One amazing thing is that technology changes things instantly. Instead of watching Trading Spaces and While You Were Out circa 2003 as the only source for inspiration, the internet is FULL of amazing ideas and blogs. And instead of newspaper classifieds (I’m looking at you Pioneer Shopper) there are sites like Rent.com that not only give you pictures and every bit of info you could possibly want, but now have 3D Floor Plans so you can see EXACTLY how the layout of the space is.

I mean, dont get me wrong any floor plan is wonderful but going from this:

To this:

Pretty amazing.

There is even an option to see it furnished.

Psst you can see the listing for this SLC apartment here!

Once you’ve actually found some place to call your own, the fun really begins! Its time to make this thing a home. Most living spaces have 1 intimidating thing in common…GIANT BLANK WALLS! (Blood curdling scream inserted here)

I am all about large scale art on a budget so as I was planning this tutorial I consulted my cute sisters (who both rent), they very emphatically said NO TOOLS.

Sooo dun dun dun dun! for this project you dont need tools! Just a 4×4 piece of wood, a little bit of paint, and a sharpie paint pen.

Start by nailing your piece of wood directly to the studs in the wall. I found the wood at Lowe’s (my local Home Depot only sells 2×4 sheets.)

Get the paint flowing out of your pen by depressing the tip onto a piece of paper until you have a little puddle.

Channel your inner preschooler and draw a handful of scribbly circles (now is a good time to let loose any pent up feelings).

I started with a Medium pen and the lines were too little.

I loved it a lot more after switching to an extra wide tip.

Ok now you do what I did and step back and wonder if you’ve really made something cool or if it looks a little amateur? Can I take a second to remind you that people do this type of art all the time and sell it for lots of money? Feel better? A little validation never hurts.

Move your furniture in and see just how awesome it looks when its not lonely on the wall!

Massive thank you to Rent.com for inspiring this fun project! Hope you have an awesome weekend!!

There are a few tips that you will hear when it comes to thrifting furniture. 1. Check to make sure its sturdy. 2. Give it the smell test. 3. Always buy real wood.

Well guess what? As great and fine as those are sometimes that isn’t an option…especially when it comes to #3 on the list. Buying real wood. If you are in love with vintage furniture the chances are great that you will come across a piece or 99 made from laminate. Chances are that parts of your piece may be real wood, while other parts (like the top) are laminate. Its just the way things are. So does that mean that you should pass up your dream piece because its not real wood?

HECK NO.

Painting laminate is a totally doable DIY. You just have to know what the right products are for the job. (This is where I come in.)

I have tried every technique that pinterest can offer and I am so excited to tell you about the fail proof way to paint laminate.

One of the most popular tutorials on Vintage Revivals is this how to paint furniture post. I 1000% recommend using Pro Classic if you can. The only downside is that Pro-Classic doesn’t come in a deep base so if you want a darker color then you are sort of out of luck.

BUT. For National Painting Week I thought it would be perfect to kill 2 birds with one stone and show you the best way to paint laminate and what type of deep base paint I use to do it!

The color is a vibrant rich green called Arugula.

Ok so this is where I started.

Before I was able to do anything to this cute guy I needed to clean off this space age duct tape that was stuck to it. You guys, this is the kind of stuff that will take off your fingerprints…from your fingers…permanently. Goo Gone and other adhesive removers didn’t work so I pulled out my favorite paint stripper and gave it a good dousing.

Thankfully I was able to scrape the majority of the adhesive off after using that.

The first step to painting laminate is to give it a nice little sanding. Laminate typically has a hard shiny finish that makes it scratch resistant and durable. If you don’t give it a little texture then the paint and primer have nothing to stick to and will easily peel off. I used 150 grit sand paper on this part. You can see in the picture below that I didn’t sand off the laminate, just the surface of it.

Once everything is sanded, wipe it down with a damp rag to make sure that all of the dust is out of your life. If you don’t do this then you will have a situation on your hands.

Ok are you ready to have your life change? The secret to a durable long lasting finish on laminate is the primer that you use, specifically Sherwin-Williams Multi Purpose Primer. It is a bonding primer that basically sticks to anything and everything that you could ever want it to.

Use a Mohair roller to apply 2 thin coats to your piece (make sure that they are fully dry in between.)

Once they have had a few hours to completely dry, give it a light sanding with 220 grit sand paper.

Then wipe it down completely to get rid of any dust.

If you are using a color that can be mixed with a light or medium base, go with Pro-Classic. If you are using a color that needs a deep base you’ll want to use Sherwin-Williams All Surface Latex Enamel.

The Latex Enamel doesn’t lay down quite as easily as the Pro-Classic, to combat that we are using a dry time extender. This gives your paint more time to relax and level out before it dries, giving you a smoother finish.

Latex Enamel is amazing for its durability and has such a great finish.

I could not be happier with how this little guy turned out!

Now for the REALLY fun part, there are a whole slew of bloggers sharing project ideas and paint palettes for National Painting Week, you will for sure want to be checking those out here.

Remember yesterday when we talked about inspiration not being a destination? How it can happen anywhere, at anytime?

A few weeks ago after a particularly hard mom day (you know those days where you know that no one in your family walked away unscathed?) I was trying to get Dylan in bed. She’s 6 and stubborn and had been fighting me on everything, all.day.long. After trying unsuccessfully for an hour to get her to go to sleep, I finally stepped away for a minute and took myself out of the chaos of the situation. I know on days when I am in a fighting mood I usually just need someone to love me, and that is what she needed too. So I grabbed a book off the shelf and snuggled in for a little story. She fell asleep almost immediately and it gave me a few minutes to breathe. Flipping through the pages and reflecting on life gave me a second to soak up a little inspiration.

I called Jamie (because she is the brilliant mind that illustrates my madness) and told her that I wanted to do a few Madeline inspired row houses. Something that the girls can help me do.

To make this project, you will need:

Cricut Explore Air
Vintage Revivals Row House designs
Black vinyl
Paint

Start by downloading the row houses in Design Space. They are a Make It Now project which means that they are perfectly sized, all you have to do is load the vinyl and click go.

Typically when you cut out a design in vinyl, you “weed” all the unnecessary parts out and toss them.

DON’T DO THAT!!! hahaha

Weed the inside of the design (the house and the windows/doors) so that it looks like this. Do not weed outside the design!

This is what you are going for:

The next step is to take the outside of the house (the part that you would normally throw away) and put it on the wall. It doesn’t have to be perfectly straight, wonky is embraced at all times on Vintage Revivals.

Then you are going to paint inside the shape. I only did one coat because I sort of the love the splotchy variation for this project.

Peel off the vinyl, and now (finally!!) you can throw it away.

Paint all of your houses, and after they have had at least 12 hours to dry you can start to put on the vinyl.

If you want to use transfer tape you can, but we placed everything by hand. I showed Dyl a picture of the houses on the computer and she did her best to match it.

I am massively excited (if you couldn’t tell by the fact that I have used 5 exclamation points already.)

I wanted all of the art in the living room to be big and bright, so simple sketches were just what the DIY Dr. ordered. Luckily for all of us, Jamie is a brilliant artist and totally gets the vibe I was looking for.

These adorable prints come black and white, but if you want to liven them up a bit (like I did) all you need is a little bit of watercolor.

We had the art printed at Alphagraphics blue print style (I love the St. George store!!). Which means that its on normal printer paper and SUPER inexpensive, like around $1. The only reason that we did this is because we had an extremely fast turnaround. Getting it printed on heavy weight cardstock is always a good idea, just a heads up that they will need at least 24 hours to get it done.

The watercolor is the easiest/most stressful part of this entire situation, because you don’t want to royally screw it up. My advice is to practice a few times before you commit. We mounted our prints before we watercolored and it left some bubbling on one (I must have used more water) so I would say to watercolor first and let it dry completely before you mount it.

The next step is to take everything out of the Ikea frame, and cut a piece of foam core posterboard to fit. Then mount the prints by spraying spray adhesive on the back of them and positioning it on the foam core (this is a 2 person job!)

Can you even imagine all of the cute ways that these little guys can be used? I am dying to see what you come up with!!

So, for this weekend only they are on sale in the Vintage Revivals Shop for $4.00. Four dollars people! The price is going up on Monday so you might want to head over before then (unless you are good with paying more, which wont hurt my feelings). You can grab 1, 2, or the entire collection of 8! The files are huge, so you can print them as large (or small) as you want, basically the world is your cactus oyster right now.

We are overhauling a 1972 Bell Travel Trailer! Follow the entire series from the beginning here!

I cannot believe that I am FINALLY at the point with The Nugget series that I get to talk about exterior paint!! Holy CRAP!! This is the best day ever!!

I am a huge believer in finding inspiration all around you, and you never know when it is going to strike. Looking at pictures of vintage trailers online I realized that the ones that I loved the most had a mix of bright colors and aluminum. Of course I wanted to do a bold pattern (because its me) but I was having a hard time finding something that was busy, but not too busy. This is where the “finding inspo all alround you” comes in to play. One of my favorite #colddeadfingers diehards Katie linked up this picture of some thrift store scores.

Do you see the amazing Thermos pattern? The one with the diamonds?! It was exactly what I was looking for! (Thanks Katie!!)

We did a few color mock ups in Photoshop and everything was just feeling so light. I swear that has been the biggest reoccuring problem that I have had with this project. So at the last minute I decided to go less desert than my original plan so that I could use some color to ground the dang thing.

I debated paint choice back and forth the entire time that we were renovating the interior. I wanted to do something that was attainable for the budget DIYer. Taking the trailer to an automotive paint shop was not even an option because $$$…$$$$$$. And also $$$.

Here is what I came up with. Exterior Paint with the right primer TOTALLY would work and be so budget friendly it isnt even funny. But I wanted the finish to be super high gloss. So my next thought was to use Exterior Paint like Behr Marquee and put a high gloss protective coat on it. Then I thought that maybe using spray paint would be the answer (Rustoleum makes a high gloss automotive in Black and White) but I would need about 5000 cans of it and it doesnt have all of the colors that I wanted. So do you know what I did? I asked my friend Josh who is a professional painter and knows all about all of the things.

He told me that he had painted a few trailers with Exterior paint and that it did work, but needed to be touched up –> redone in about 5 years. Suck. He then said that Automotive paint would be the best, most durable option, and that it would give me the finish that I wanted. Suck again. THEN he told me that he had a HVLP sprayer for automotive paint that he would let me borrow if I wanted to DIY it. Sweet!!!!

To prep, we stripped off all of the paint (most came off with Citristrip but some stubborn spots needed Airplane Stripper which is the heavy dutiest of heavy duty. Court did all of that scrubbing because he is the husband of the year. Then we cleaned it REALLY well, and I taped everything off so that Josh could come.

He told me that Automotive paint has the worst kind of over spray that that I needed to mask off everything that I didnt want paint on. He wasnt joking. I thought I was done taping off in the pic below, but I ended up taping off the entire top section too and I am so glad that I did.

All of the automotive supplies we bought at a specialty paint store.

First we sprayed the clean metal with automotive primer (gray)

Then once that was dry, Josh sprayed it with automotive paint. It took a few coats, but it looked AMAZING.

(It was at this point we put the door and windows on because it was SO much easier to tape them off than to tape off gaping holes.)

We started by putting down the white first, then we built the other colors on top of it.

The next step was taping off all of the triangles that we wanted to stay white. I figured out the measurement distance and marked and taped and cut and marked and taped and cut. The most frustrating part about the entire thing was that I couldnt figure out a way to prevent bleeding. I tried ScotchBlue, and masking tape, and automotive masking tape and it didnt matter, because of the texture in the faux wood and the ridges in the aluminum the bleeding just kept happening (its ok because we fixed it!)

Instead of using gray primer for the burgundy stripe, we used rose primer. Red is a hard color to paint with, it takes a lot more layers to get full coverage, so using a rose primer helped that quite a bit. This side of the trailer was the test side. Everything was done a day beforehand on it so that I could make sure that 1. I could figure out what I was doing, and 2. that I liked it. We didnt want to have another tile fiasco on our hands.

You can see the texture and miniscule gaps in the picture below.

This is where I took over the painting. You.guys. it was so cool!! WAY easier than I thought it would be. Just a word of warning though. Sometimes you make unintentional messes and you get automotive paint on your hands…and it doesnt come off for 2 weeks. SO just wear gloves if you go this route. Alrighty?

In the picture below you can see the storm that came rolling in and put the painting out of commission for a few days, and if you look closely you can see the bleeding. To touch it up we used lacquer thinner and Q-tips and just sort of wiped it off. It worked best if we did it pretty soon after the painting, before it had a chance to cure.

Round 3 was the light pink. Again, lots and lots of taping and masking.

My awesome sister Amy got assigned the job of touchup.

Also, won’t you be my neighbor?

Lets talk about the tires. Court scrubbed all of the rust off of the old wheels and I sprayed them with white automotive. We replaced the actual tires and both of the bearings because I wanted to make sure that it was safe. We found the moon caps here and they were EXACTLY what I was picturing. In the pic above it looks a little wonkfest because it was just leaning against the hub.

It was at this point that we left for Pinner’s Conference in Salt Lake (about 4 hours away) while we were there Jamie my AMAZING assistant started the final round of paint, goldish copper metallic pinstripes on all of the diamonds.

And guess what? That is all I am going to show you today, because tomorrow is the big reveal!!

There are many cool things that come with blogging territory, but one of the coolest has got to be this moment. When my friends at Sherwin-Williams asked if I would be interested in announcing their Color of the Year for 2015 it was one of those look around the room just to make sure they were talking to the right person moments! Man, they are the best.

When I learned what the color was, I was a little surprised. I was expecting something totally different like Rust or Olive or a deep grayish blue. But I actually LOVE the color and quickly warmed up to the idea of doing something different with it.

Want to know what it is?!

The Sherwin-Williams 2015 color of the year is Coral Reef!!

Coral Reef is such a versatile color. It goes with everything under the sun! Navy? Check. Cantaloupe? Check. Spearmint Green? Check. Blush Pink? Check Check Check!!

Acid Yellow? Obviously!! (No mint and chevron pairings here my friends!)

Lately I have been craving warm colors (Nugget I am looking at you). They just bring so much life into a space. Coral Reef is pretty much the queen of that little situation. I just haaad to come up with a way to show how current and wonderful it is. This basic wall treatment has been kicking around the ol’ creativity center for a bit. Painting an entire accent wall is great, but this project is simple and special. The conclusion is that a thick vertical stripe is absolutely stunning. Paired with Coral Reef it just cant be stopped.

So here is how to recreate this project.

Start by painting your wall white. I use High Hide white (if your local Sherwin-Williams doesn’t know what that is it is an extra white base with 3 oz of white pigment added. It is my favorite white and I use it EVERYWHERE.)

Using a level, draw 2 vertical lines 2.5 feet apart. Then using painter’s tape, tape on the outside of the lines.

The trick to getting perfect paint lines EVERY TIME is to bleed your wall color before you paint your accent color. That way, the wall color fills the grooves and valleys in your wall texture instead of the accent color. To do this just paint along the edge of your tape line.

When your paint is dry, it is finally time to put the Coral Reef up!!

It is crazy how painting a stripe like this makes the ceiling look like it is miles away, and who doesn’t want taller ceilings?! Its like saying you don’t want to have a lifetime supply of Nutella. Or a cape for the man in your life after seeing Taylor Swift’s Blank Space video. Its just not a thing.

I love how this wall turned out. It adds just the perfect amount of color without overtaking your life. And I am SO excited to see all of the places that Coral Reef is going to pop up!!

So what do you think? Are you excited about their pick?

*I teamed up with my favorite paint company in all the land (Sherwin-Williams) to collaborate on this project. All opinions are my own!

We are overhauling a 1972 Bell Travel Trailer! Follow the entire series from the beginning here!

Finding a way to bring plants into The Nugget, and being able to take them out for normal day to day care is the problem on the chopping block today. I knew that I wanted plants. Because hello. But there were a few things logistically that needed to be worked out.

I wanted a lot of them. As many as I could fit, because plants just bring so much life to a space. The problem was that I didn’t want to have to pack/secure them separately for each trip. 1 or 2 in the sink isn’t a big deal but an entire box full of just plants seemed a little unnecessary. So that meant that I needed to give them a permanent home that they could travel in and be safe.

The cool thing about this project is that it can totally translate into a plant shelf for your kitchen window, Just add a few L brackets on the ends that connect into your window sill and you are good to go!

There is just one special thing that you need to do this DIY. A 4” Hole Saw. It is this really large and in charge drill bit that basically makes a giant circle in your wood (the same type of Hole Saw that we used to drill the holes for the door knob!) Its not the cheapest of finds ($19.97 at Home Depot) BUT it was SIMPLE to use and sure beat the heck out of jigging all of the holes out.

I decided that the back window would be the best place to put the shelf because we already had a board across the back (to break up the white wall) but it turned into this super functional savior for this project!

I started by measuring the width of the shelf. There was one spot that we needed to trim down because of the other shelf, but it was a really easy fix.

Next I decided how many planters I wanted and evenly marked and measured their distances.

Then we positioned the Hole Saw and let er rip! This was a great project for Court to do (he is the best!) because the teeth on the Hole Saw are really grabby and sometimes they grab and want to spin the drill (and your arm) instead of cutting through the wood. It is kind of one of those things that as you are doing the project you will get a feel for it.

The girls had a blast playing with the circle scraps, so it was sort of a win win on the project front.

After all of the holes were drilled we took it inside to make sure that it looked right. Turns out the notch on the side needed to be a little deeper….

The next step was to put wood glue (Titebond III) on the top of the piece that was already mounted to the wall and then put the planter piece in.

Then we used a combo of nails from the nail gun and screws to secure it to that piece and to the side of the other shelf.

I was convinced that we would need to put a bracket on the left side but after seeing what a tight fit and the combo of glue and nails did, that thing isn’t going anywhere.

We painted basic terra cotta planters with a bunch of tester paint from The Home Depot and gave them a coat of clear gloss spray paint.

I could not wait to get the plants inside.

I wanted plants that wouldn’t die at the word go. Most of the plants that I have are Cacti and Succulents. I did add a fern for pictures because they are so big and beautiful but I have a hard time keeping them alive, so i don’t know if we’ll keep it there long term.

The really great thing about this project is that it gave me a place to subtly tie all of the colors together.

If you have been wondering if the diamond theme continues throughout the Nugget. Rest assured my friends, right now Diamonds are the only constant thing in my crazy life!!

When we started out, the table in the Nugs was a lovely shade of lime green. We updated it with concrete overlay when we did the countertops. (Tutorial for that here!)

This cute project can be duplicated just about anywhere. Walls, floors, art, pillows, rugs. It is an extremely easy pattern to replicate, you just have to know the secret.

Start by marking the dead center of your diamonds. You can draw on the entire length of your piece (a tabletop in my case) and it will be covered. Then add painters tape (ScotchBlue Delicate was perfect for this project!) that mark the width of your diamonds.

I used a white colored pencil for this project because a normal pencil was the exact color of the concrete overlay.

Next step was deciding the size of the diamonds. I decided that 1” was just about right. So I started by marking every inch up the side of the tape (make sure that you are making parallel marks on each piece of tape, or your diamonds will be a total wonkfest.)

Then you are going to mark every 1” up the center line BUT make sure that it is sitting at the center of your tape marks. So you will start marking it at 1/2” and then every inch after that. This will give you a diamond shape vs.. just a straight line.

Connect every other diamond with painters tape. (you will have to do the painting in 2 rounds to get them all!)

Make sure that your painters tape is sealed so that you don’t get any bleeding and paint the inside of your diamonds!

Once you have full coverage (after a couple of coats) gently peel off your painters tape.

When your paint is nice and dry you can go back and paint the other diamonds.

Follow the same steps of taping, sealing and painting.

I followed up with a light sanding because I had some pretty noticeable paint lines. Then we installed the table.

The Nugs is pretty teensy, but after taking the bunk and upper cabinet out it was feeling mighty spacious…until the table moved back in. It takes up approximately 83% of the floor space. Fun. But it looks adorable and it is more than just a table, it is the bed too, so its sort of important. (Also, we had a little bit of spilled dirt if you couldn’t tell.)

This table just makes my heart so happy. It was such a simple inexpensive fix and I cant wait to try this pattern somewhere else!!

Because that would be lovely.) We talked about the fun retro diamond wall treatment last week, but I wanted to share the other paint jobs that have happened.

The entire room got a coat of my favorite white. At my local Sherwin-Williams they call it High Hide White. It is an ultra (or extra) white base with 3 oz of white pigment added. It is my go to white for everything. In fact, every room I do gets this mix on the walls because I love it that much.

Lets chat about the closet. Closets are not that fun, right? Some might say that they are even a little boring.

Well. Boring isn’t a word in our dictionary anymore.

Remember in Macie’s bedroom when we painted the ceiling? We are taking that effect and moving it inside the closet.

The color that we used was Naval by Sherwin-Williams. If you are looking for an amazing deep navy, good news, your search can come to a stop. It is a really rich dark blue, and doesn’t go too “little boy’”. (Does that make sense to anyone but me?)

Do you know how wonderful it is to have a sister that will paint with you? I think it is the gift this holiday season.

If you follow me on Insta, you got a sneak peek at what we are doing for the closet doors…if you don’t, its ok I’ll tell you anyway (come closer!) DIY Bypass Barn Doors! So stay tuned for that fun tutorial and a whole lot of what not to do (like put 600 feet of rope in the dryer…its “knot” a good idea.)

Also tutorial for that amazing light is happening this week too! Just for fun, does anyone recognize the wood pieces?!
