It’s Party Time! Let do this!!

Every month we are celebrating clearing a project out of our stash of unfinished hopes and dreams pile. Congrats to you and your hubby are in order. I am so proud!

My project this month is more of an idea hoard, and not so much an actual hoard. You know when you have an idea and it just hangs out, in your mind, resurfacing when you least expect it? Yes. It is one of those projects.

Meet the Pom Pom Pillow. Literally.

I dug around in my fabric stash for something long forgotten. Remember back in the day when I made an entire duvet cover from fabric scraps? This pillow is made out of white vinyl, black felted wool and black yarn.

I freehanded the letters so that they were a little imperfect (because that kind of stuff just makes me so happy!)

Then I made a simple simple pillow cover using this tutorial. If you can sew 4 straight lines, you can make this pillow.

After I figured out the placement, I glued them on with Fabri-Tac. That stuff is legit.

I used this secret ninja technique for making giant pom poms and used upholstery thread to attach them to the pillow by stitching around the center of the pom. It doesnt have to be pretty, it just has to be functional.

I love that this is a 30 minute project, because lets face it, sometimes you just need to accomplish something. Unlike cleaning the house, this project stays done. Warms my heart just thinking about it.

Now it’s time to show off your #rockwhatyagotparty projects. Please follow the rules below!

And just a humble reminder that we are in the final voting round of the Apartment Therapy Homies and would love your support! xo

Because I didnt. So I feel a little bit like I have been missing out on one of the greatest things life has to offer. If you knew this you are one lucky sucker.

For those that are like me, don’t worry, here is the 411.

They sell bags of scrap leather at Michaels! and they are so cheap! ($5.99 each) and it is like opening a treasure box of joy because you don’t actually know what you are buying!

I snagged a bag of Suede leather (they also sell regular leather that is really thick and tough) and who would have known that underneath the beige would have been a bunch of fantastic colors?

I knew that they needed to be something amazing. And we haven’t had a pillow fix for a minute, so of course that was the first thing on my list.

I found this really basic olive green throw pillow at Target for $25.00. It is on clearance online!! (If you are in the mood for sewing I here is a fail-proof pillow tutorial).

Lately I have been really in love with putting pops of pink everywhere. But I know that not everyone is in love with that, and the colors of leather scraps that I ended up with were more masculine, so I just decided to roll with it.

To recreate this pillow you will need:

4 different colors of Leather. (Mine all happened to be colored, but this would look amazing with different shades of browns and tans!

1 Pillow Cover

Fabri-Tac

Start by cutting your leather into triangles. There are 2 different ones, so make sure that you cut 2 colors with the longest side on the left and 2 with the longest side on the right. That way they will fit together for this pattern.

Dry run your pattern before you start gluing it on. That way you can change it up and find out what pattern/color combo you like best.

Slide a piece of paper in your cover to prevent glue seepage (no one likes seepage.)

When you are ready to glue, use Fabri-Tac to attach the leather to your pillow cover.

Set a guide so that you can make a straight line. I used a cutting guide, but you can use anything with a straight edge.

Let your pillow dry for 30 minutes before you move it.

Stuff with the pillow and you are DONE!

This project took me about 20 minutes to do, and it looks fantastic!!

Also did you notice my rug that is the perfect shade of Radiant Orchid (Pantone color of the year 2014)? We will totally be discussing this color soon.

This post is all about embracing your inner artist.

Painting on fabric is nothing new, in fact I have done it quite a few times and I am sure you can find thousands of pins with tips and tricks. The problem that comes up again and again is that the paint is stiff. Even with fabric paint (which is significantly less stiff) the paint still sits on the surface of your fabric.

But never fear, Decoart is here!

They just launched a brand new product called Ink Effects and it is completely different from any other fabric paint I have ever used.

The process is totally different too.

Start by painting your design on a piece of white printer paper. The thicker your paint the more vivid the color will be.

Let your painting dry for 45 minutes.

Once it is dry put it face down on your fabric and iron it on.

Ink effects works MUCH better with synthetic fabric like Polyester than it does on Cotton. The pigment is absorbed better so the color is deeper.

After you have ironed your design (the longer you apply heat the deeper the color) peel back your paper and enjoy!

I love how bright these little circles are in the sea of white.

I love making my own pillows. It is so much easier to find fabric to customize my own than to find the perfect pillow at a store. And not only that but how about the price of store bought pillows? Sheesh.

So I am going to let you in on one of my favorite secrets. No one in St. George where I live is allowed to do this though, got it?

The best kind of pillow inserts are obviously Down. They are so much fuller and you can chop them. (Are you a chopper?)

Down inserts from a fabric store will run you around $20.00 a piece, which is a sucky price when you want to save money.

So here is the secret.

Head to your local Homegoods, TJ Maxx or Ross and look for the pillows that are on clearance. Yes, they are probably ugly. (You should have seen this girl giving me looks like I was crazy when I was buying these.)

As long as the cover is removable you just worked the system a little. Congrats my friend!

I got 3 down pillows for $21.00.

I love pillows. I hate that pillows cost a crapload. I know its not an EPIC project but I have something cooking that is heart stopping amazing. So today I am going to show you the easiest pillow tutorial ever.

So as much as I love pillows I hate when kids(or husbands) wipe their faces on them and they aren’t removable. Spot Clean Only translated in my language is “I will look like crap in 5 minutes”

So the first rule is that it must be removable.

It must be washable.

They must be cute.

Start off with a piece of fabric that is 19” long and cut selvage to selvage. (Basically the entire width of the fabric.) In the pic it is folded in 1/2 still from the bolt.

Then on one end sew a hem.

Next you are going to fold it up about 14” (it doesn’t have to be exact) with the inside of the hem on the outside. (Right sides together.)

Then you are going to stitch down each side, reinforcing the ends. And along the top (where it is folded).

Fold one of the top corners down to the opposite bottom corner to find where it is square.

Fold it over there and stitch along the bottom

Then measure about 15” down and trim.

Next you want to hem this edge. Make sure that you are hemming it so the inside of the hem is on the top of the pillow.

Then just like before you are going to stitch down each side securing the ends really well.

Clip your corners so that they are sharp when its right side out

A few tips:

The fabric that I used is Duck Cloth. It is a heavy weight canvas material, I love it because it holds its shape.

You can see how I put the words on with my Silhouette here.

The Pillow size that I used was 19”. The reason that I cut the fabric at 19” is so that it fills it firmly. It goes back to having it hold its shape….

Not this Madonna,

This Madonna

My homies at Silhouette sent me some of their Brand Spanking New Sold Out But Is Now Back Fusible Fabric Interfacing. FYI the acronym for that would be BSNSOBINBFFI. Pretty great if you ask me.

In my previous life before Vintage Revivals I made baby crap. And I did not have a Silhouette. Nor did I have their awesome fabric interfacing. So I used scissors. And Wonder Under. Which I hated. Cause it was too stringy and the only option that you had was to sew around it.

Well guess what. Silhouette has 2 kinds of interfacing. Sewable and Clean Cut (Non Sewable). So it gives you the option to be a little lazy and still have high quality stuff. Props to Silhouette for that option right?

So this is what I did with it. Basically a monkey can do it.

You iron on your interfacing to the back of the fabric.

Peel off the paper

That will leave the interfacing on the fabric. See how it made it shiny? Then put the fabric face up on your heavy cutting mat (the green one)

I also double cut the fabric (its in the Send To Silhouette Menu under Change Settings) Just to make sure that I cut it all.

Then position it, iron and Ta Da! A mildly offensive pillow!

And guess what you can do it too.

Right this second until March 27th you can buy a freaktatstically awesome Silhouette bundle that has everything you need.

It includes:

1 Silhouette SD, one of each fabric interfacing (clean cut & sewable) and a roll of white flocked heat transfer material for the LOW LOW price of only $229. Regular price is $330.00

Disclaimer: If you are one of those “sew-ers” that measures and pins and is precise YOU WILL HATE ME. You will possibly want to murder me in my sleep. Just sayin’

Yesterday I was feeling like a bit of a slacker so I decided to be a little crafty. I had about 4 billion yards of grey chiffon left over from the drapes in my living room and have been wanting to make a pillow or something out of it.

I was thinking something like this:

Have you ever worked with this fabric for anything that requires any structure? The fabric itself is enough to call this pillow Lucy.

I had this down pillow that I got from Ross for $4.00.

I took the cover off and measured it.

Then I couldn’t find my rotary cutter. I couldn’t find my sewing scissors. I couldn’t find anything except the CRAPPIEST CRAP scissors that I got at the dollar store 10 years ago. Sweet. This is the straightest line that I could cut.

Plan re-evaluation #1

Then Dylan came in and dropped her Popsicle on the fabric. Look close it takes up the whole space that is flattened out. So now I need to wash it.

Plan re-evaluation #2

Taking inspiration from a piece of this fabric that somehow ended up in my laundry I decided to do strips of it that would frayish (yes frayish is a word on my blog) when I wash the Popsicle off.

I cut strips that were between 2 and 3 inches wide. Obviously they were not perfect considering my equipment. Then I started sewing them on.

(No, I didn’t have grey thread.) So then I folded the strip that I had just sewn in half and laid another strip on top of it.

This is what the back looks like:

And the front:

So when I was about halfway done I noticed that this technique was shrinking the larger piece of fabric quite a bit. Dang now it wasn’t going to fit on my pillow form.

Plan re-evaluation #3

But I just kept truckin’

Then I realized that if the ends of the ruffles were sewn down when I put the back on that they would be totally flat and lifeless.

Plan re-eval #4

So I cut another piece the same size as my original 19×19 and stitched it on the back of the ruffled piece leaving about 1/2″ of fabric on the end of each seam.

Next I tacked the ruffle piece down on the edges so that it wasn’t just hanging out. You know like flapping.

Then I sewed the back piece onto the added one, just like my mama taught me (not really I don’t know why I said that) all 3 sides and most of the 4th and then stuff stuff stuff and hand stitch it shut. Oh yes and I trimmed off all the extra inside and on the ends of the ruffles so that they were sort of straight.

And here she is in all her glory.

I know that this tutorial is the worst ever and I may loose some friends over it but I think its kind of fun to see the problem solving process.

p.s. Lucy stands for Lucifer.

p.s.s. Yes, I do know how to sew and junk. You can see one of my other projects that required sewing {here}
