Gosh! So sorry to hear about this and wish you didn't have to go through it. As a small comfort, I appreciate and relate to the fact that you can't snap your fingers and solve the problem with hired help. I think a lot of us (including me) are in this boat and have a hard time relating to a lot of bloggers who have so many hired hands doing their renovations. I hope you and your family get a functioning (and I'm sure you'll make it beautiful) kitchen soon.

we feel you, sister. We've all been there...or are there now...living situations that aren't ideal and you have to get the kids to accept this as the current normal and keep moving forward. Thanks for the kind words about your partnership. It's so easy to forget you are not alone in this if you have a partner, and if you don't acknowledge that blessing things go real bad real quick. Your house will be beautiful and we are rooting for you in the interim.

I feel your pain girl. Been in my house just over a year with three different varieties of linoleum plus sub floor showing in the kitchen and plywood countertops. I dream of the day I can spray 409 and wipe down real counters! Vacuuming kitchen countertops (with the hose of course) isn't as fun as it sounds.

Let me tell you about the time my husband threw a basement under our 1900's farmhouse. I had a 5 week old baby. Plus 5 other kids. Literally I could write a book about that episode in our life. We lived and the house is now on a full basement. And I have plenty of remodel stories to entertain people for years!! Winner winner! Keep the stories coming cause I can totally relate!

another fellow living-in-the-middle-of-a-giant-remodel friend here. cannot agree more...it's not exactly a time to look back and reminisce all the good (horrible) times. it's just a yucky messy hard time, really. although i admit, we only lived about two weeks without the kitchen sink and most appliances being hooked up, and that two weeks about did me in. i don't know how you're doing it for this long without a kitchen! props to you. keep going. (cuz what else can ya do?! ;) i mean that in the nicest way possible, cuz i'm there too haha). if it was just me and the hubs? sure. not fun but not the end of the world. but with kids?? it is 10 times harder. good for you. keep truckin, reno friend.

Thank you so so much for writing this! I'm a long-time lurker on your site, but I had to come out of the woodwork to reply, because my husband and I are dealing with very similar circumstances in our house. It's a bit different, but the mold and the kitchen demolition has been close enough that reading this was surreal. We're currently in the no-cabinets-no-counters-washing-dishes-in-the-bathtub-eating-too-much-McDonald's stage, and it's rough. I agree, though, that having someone next to you who will keep working when things are hard makes the difference.

Again, thanks for writing. It's nice to know I'm not alone.

I absolutely LOVE reading your stuff, because as someone who is going through the same insanity that is reno-ing a space you are currently residing in (just hit the 2 year mark last month), I could not describe the emotions better myself!! A bit bipolar if I do say so. It's comforting knowing someone else is in the same boat and feels the way you do!

And by the way, since we are literally doing this as a two man/woman show, no hired help (except for the few awesome friends we bribe with beer and BBQ), I have used many of your tutorials for my DIY projects!! You have such brilliant ideas, thanks for all the wonderful tips! As a matter of fact, I am actually taking on a project this weekend using your pink Ikea table hack!

Hang in there and keep up the amazing work!

Sincerely,

Your Reno Sister, Lindsay

just wow. wow. dang. it's like the universe was telling you something!

anyway so you know those home improvement shows such as love it/list it. where the owner is all exasperated that they have these issues, what i don't understand is why they don't expect these issues. heck, wouldn't you have already done something about it if you didn't have a gut instinct that it was going to be a problem.

the fact that you have your husband, as much as he grumbles...standing by you during all of this, makes it all the better!
