Yea I believe this too. I have a new sprayer i got on sale in the garage and cant use it because i need to spend more money on materials. I found that using a primer, a good roller and cover and good paint, is enough for me. I will leave the sprayer for the time I will be staining the new porch and deck and painting the house. Is too hard to clear a room, prep and spray with all these children about when I can hide a bucket and roller in a bathroom while i paint and stop when i have to take care of a little one or some other of my family's needs. Also tip i havent read yet...sand the wall for extra smoothness and to fix mistakes. Even a sponge sander is better than nothing. I do love the smoothness I see in the walls and trims of this blogger but I could never afford such paint.

I appreciate your tips but do not understand the big benefits of a sprayer! Gobs of masking tape, face masks, overalls, back rolling, expensive investment of a sprayer, etc etc etc . By the time I'm done with all of that it doesn't seem like much of a benefit. If a person can paint well and quickly using the brush and roller, why bother with the cost, prep, cleanup using a sprayer?

That's a great tip about backrolling. I sprayed our kitchen cabinets and every time I do a touch up, it's completely obvious.

Thanks for the wonderful tips. You've inspired me to go for smooth walls. I spoke to our local SW store and they recommended the Cashmere line for smooth walls vs. the Emerald you use saying that the Cashmere will fill in and smooth out the texture better. They also said the Cashmere is wipeable like the Emerald on the enamel flat just like the Emerald Matte. Do you have any experience with Cashmere and would you recommend it?

You can also try shellac. It is a great sealer on knots which tend to show even through primer and paint applications.

Linda, if you roll a coat of Zinsser on (not Kilz!), then roll on a coat of your paint, that should hide it. I was getting a ton of bleed through until I rolled on some Zinsser. In some particularly bad spots, I had to use two coats. Much better now!

Thanks for these tips! I'm about to repaint my house and I've been freaking out about my terrible paint skills. I don't want to tape everything but I want it to look pristine, we're covering grey walls and painting everything white, it'll be a big change. After reading this I'm getting a sprayer and we're doing it the right way.
