My favorite plant for the dry summer is the portulaca. It's a succulent vine-y plant that is bursting with little flowers. The big box stores usually sell the multi colored ones, but you can find single colored ones at nurseries now and then. They are really easy to take care of (hello succulents!), and if you want them to be bursting with little crepe paper like flowers, just pick the dead blooms off each day. Otherwise you can leave them and they still have quite a bit of color.

I am renovating a 1917 home and I am with you on the tons of cabinets idea. That is the way it would have been done and they wouldn't have had a hood, unless it was a mansion the vent hood would have been apart of the stove oven combo and vented out the back of the appliance somehow. Have you thought about hiding the hood completely underneath the cabinet? Ignore the style of the linked kitchen below (its awesome but I know you are going for something different), but I linked it so as an example of installing a vent to go under the cabinets and completely hiding it. I am sure you will lose a little cabinet space which it sounds like you have a ton elsewhere.

I think this is the vent they used but I am sure you could find something similar...

Anyway, it could be the solution to a hood and the look you are going for! Love what you are doing!
