In reply to Jean. Absolutely. The only time you'd need to remove the previous shingles is if you had bad boards underneath and needed to redo the work below. The shingles actually act as an insulator and sheet insulation isn't mandatory underneath. Some people want to charge you for that removal, but there's really no need! You can have several layers of shingles and the metal sheet roofing and not violate any weight or structural issues with the roof! Some people do choose to put felt down over the original shingles to help in noise reduction or use it in lieu of lathe, but we felt this had better air flow and was cheaper for our situation!

I loved the comment about your father thinking it was important that you be able to change a tire on the highway in the rain. My father was the same way. Once when I was in high school and weighed 89 pounds I changed a tire while a cop leaned against his patrol car and watched me. When I finished, he said “I really didn’t think you could do that”. BTW, I am now 74 years old and can still change a tire.

I love your series so much, Sarah! It seems like so many design blogs focus on the just – “you just do this,” as if it’s not incredibly complicated. I so appreciate you (and Mandi, too) reveling in the complicated. Not trying to make it easy.

I love your attitude towards DIY, I love your writing style, I love how your kids and family are all in this together. Also, as a Madisonian, I very much appreciate that you live in Wisconsin 🙂
