I feel like I can join their ranks with my latest project. I am currently carrying- in utero- a vintage camper travel trailer, and I can finally talk about it!!

Besties of the internet, meet The Nugget, a 1973 Bell Travel Trailer.

I have been on a not-actively-searching-but-still-looking mission for a vintage trailer for the better part of 2 years. (There are a lot of really bad ones out there folks.) For some reason or another I just couldn’t find the one. Then one happy Saturday morning in April I was browsing Craigslist. There, in the Antique section, was a listing for a small camper. It.was.adorable. I just had to see it. So my MIL and I trucked to the next town over to meet the little guy.

When you are shopping for a vintage trailer there are a few things to keep in mind. They are ALL damaged. All of them. Usually it is water damage, and everything that goes along with that happy situation. There can also be problems with the exterior siding, the frame, the electrical, the tires, and that doesn’t begin to include the cosmetic issues. I went into this meet and greet knowing that I could handle certain things, but having met a few other vintage campers that were severely damaged, I knew what to run away from.

When you are shopping, get as much info from the seller as you can. The Nugget has had 2 previous owners, a man and his granddaughter (I bought it from her). It has lived in Southern Utah it’s whole life, which means that while it was exposed to the elements, the dry climate helped it be not completely overrun with water damage and mold. The way that it smells when you walk inside is a ginorm indicator of the damage level. Does it smell mildewy or damp? What is the visible water damage like? Check the corners, the ceiling and around the windows, this is where the largest amount of damage usually occurs. Can you see the dark spots along the corner? That is water damage.

Does it pull? Or will you need a flat bed trailer to bring it home? Our seller still used the trailer and had, within the last year, pulled it 5 hours away. This is pretty huge to know if it is in pulling condition.

The seller said that the electrical had a few problems (we will get into this in another post) and they had to run a new set of brake lights to the back.

The previous owner had also replaced some wood on the back end and cut through the aluminum siding to make that happen. When they were finished they used aluminum tape to hold the 2 pieces together, so that totally needed to be replaced. You can see exactly what I am talking about in the picture below. see the silver line where the brown and white siding meet? That is the tape.

You can also see where they took out the original tail lights and the replacement lights they put on the bumper. Wires and all.

I can make a list of all of the things that need to be replaced, but I can sum it up in 4 words…

All of the things.

But all in all it was a pretty great little find for $1,000.

When I got home I did a little research. The Nugs is a 1973 Bell Travel Trailer. Apparently Bell Trailers are a very rare breed. Not in a “GOLD MINE!” way, just in a “I cant find any info and the guys at the trailer store had never heard of it kind of way.” Obscure and mysterious, just how I like ‘em.

Lets just talk about the interior for a second shall we?

This thing is teensy.

The back of the trailer is the seating/sleeping/eating area. The tabletop drops down to become the base for the bed (that is why it is shin level). Above that is a slide out bunk. As is it sleeps 4.

On the other side is the little kitchenette. Complete with a gas range, sink and 2 faucets (because one of them doesn’t work)

Next to the kitchen is a small storage closet that could be used for a port-a-potty. Which we will not be doing.

It has an ice block fridge. Which means that it is basically a cooler that you put a block of ice in and it keeps your food cold. There is also a propane heater below the fridge.

I feel like for such a small space it has a lot of storage. There are lots of cupboards and a couple of large areas underneath the benches, as well as the closet.

Ceiling height is really good. I am 5’9 and Court is 6’1 and we can both comfortably stand inside (except underneath the bunk).

The biggest challenge is going to make if feel like you are not inside a shoebox.

One of the most exciting parts of this adventure is my partner in crime, The Home Depot. It has been really great working with my favorite store on the planet, and everyone at my local store asks about the little nugs every time I am there (which FYI was 4 times yesterday).

I really love learning new things, but man, this learning curve is steep. I am so relieved that I have you guys to share it with and not judge me when I fail. Its already happened a few times, so stay tuned!

Design wise (because lets be honest, this is everyone’s favorite part, I am going for a retro desert vibe. It is such a teensy space that I think more muted colors with little moments of brightness is totally the way to go.

Special order supplies have started rolling in, want to see what I have so far? I am so in love with this ultra light mint penny tile and teardrop running lights. (picture of the tile looks a little lighter than it is IRL)

These cabinet pulls are just so good.

Catherineholm Lotus? Ummm. Absolutely.

(Image via)

The best part about these little trailers is that they are supposed to be fun and whimsical. Let the creative floodgates open!

So have you overhauled a vintage camper? I am DYING for your advice (also please leave links if you have info/pictures!)

My master bedroom has been “in the works” for a while. I started stenciling it in June, and installing board and batten in September. One mistake that I think so many people do that make things more complicated and frustrating is that they become so SET in a color palette or design scheme that they don’t let the room design flow organically. This room makeover is the PERFECT example of that.

Are you ready for the ultimate before and after?!! Here is the Before Before…Like from the MLS listing when we bought our house…:

Sick Nasty, right?!

If you want to see more of the NASTY MLS listing that I fell in love with you can click here.

This is what it looked like after we moved in and how things are in my real life and fixed it up a little…and by fixed up I mean got rid of that diseased carpet.

Originally the room was going to be Coral and Navy and Gold. That is it. Nothing else. I was struggling a little trying find fabric that matched the Coral Mirrored Dresser (Krylon Coral Isle). I had an impossible time trying to find something that was Navy AND Coral. Like IMPOSSIBLE. There was none.

So what is a girl to do? I went to the DI (Utah’s version of the Goodwill) and looked in the women’s clothing section. Did you know that you can find some really great fabric at the Thrift Store? Most long skirts or dresses have at least a yard or 2.

When I saw this skirt I KNEW it was perfect for the space. No it was not Coral and Navy. BUT it had Coral and Navy in it as well as a ton of other true bright colors. It was exactly what I needed to bring more life to the room.

So I made it into pillows!

(All of the other fabric for the pillows is from Joann’s and the pillow forms are basically stolen they were so cheap. The white duvet and fuchsia sheet are from Target. The green throw is from Homegoods.

Using this fabric TOTALLY opened up my entire color scheme which I LOVE!! The stencil is amazing right?! You can see a full tutorial on how to stencil your walls here. If you have a large space to fill lining large pictures up is a great way to fill the space. And the coat of arms throws it off balance a little and makes it way more interesting.

Here is the before of that wall:

Did you notice that I spray painted my bed frame brass? I used Krylon Metallic in Brass.

On the opposite wall I used the mirror that used to hang in my entryway.

You guys know that I am OBSESSED with awesome frames and buy them any time I see one. I have accumulated quite the collection so I hung the board and batten so that I could show them off. Its like a mixture of a gallery wall and specimen art of awesomeness.

Here is a before of that wall..

I used basic white curtains from Ikea and hung them really high on the wall. This makes the windows seem much bigger. Just make sure if you do this that your curtains are long enough to touch or puddle on the floor. Personally, I love a good puddle.

I found the nightstands at Homegoods on clearance, and you can see the full tutorial on how to make the hanging pendant lights here.

And don’t you LOVE that giant horse head?! I found that at Homegoods also.

The before of this chair deserves an award. Don’t you think?

Now for some fun shots.

Do you think of your Entryway as a room in your house? You should. It is the FIRST thing that people see when they come in your front door, it sets the entire mood for the rest of your space. I have spent the last week and 1/2 making over my Entryway and I am dying to show you!

This is what it looked like before the makeover:

I love it.

So let me give you the Mandilicious guided tour!

The hands down greatest thing in here is the tandem bicycle art. Do you remember a few weeks ago when I shared my list of 6 of my favorite blogs? Well on that list was Olson Ink. Jonathan is SO insanely talented that I knew he was the man for the job.

All I did was tell him that I wanted a tandem old school bike in cobalt and white. He came up with a 100% custom sketch (that I jumped for joy at!) It was SO much better than anything that I could have dreamed up.

He painted it on a 8’x4’x1” plywood with a wood veneer. The wood was stained a light Honey Blonde color before he started painting. Then when he was all done he cut it into 5 sections.

Isn’t he amazing?! Crap. I don’t use a lot of art in my house because it feels so impersonal but to have something like this painted by one of your friends? Sheesh, it doesn’t get much better than that. And when Jonathan becomes rich and famous I will forever have a custom piece painted by him. (For those interested in having him paint something for you you can email him at jonathan.olson4 at hotmail dot com)

The credenza was a find that my Mother In Law found about a year ago. It was only $35.00 and she used it in my Sister in Law’s bedroom until we decided to change her room up. It had been sitting in the garage the last few months and I knew that it needed to come and live at my house! Not one thing has been changed on it, sometimes you can really score a great piece that just needs a good wipe down! Its probably from the 50’s and I had a really hard time capturing the vibrancy of it. It is almost the exact same color as my kitchen table. It is made out of metal so its really industrial but, helllllllo its teal. Its like a combo made in mismatched heaven.

All of the books and odds and ends as well as the lamp were found thrifting. The cute little stool was a $10.00 Craigslist find and it gives it the raw industrial push that the space needed.

And then there is of course the Herringbone Ceiling. Oh how I love it. But it would not be as awesome without Octy the Purple Chandelier. Ol’ Octy is still one of the best thrifting finds I have ever happened across.

I have had a few pretty major room makeovers using Board and Batten. It is my FAVORITE way to bring white walls into a room and still give it visual interest. I wasn’t planning on doing a tutorial on this but I have had SO many emails about it I thought I would share a quick tutorial. This is the cheapest, easiest way I have found to do Board and Batten. And cheap and easy are a pretty great combo…

The pictures are going to be a collection of the last 3 Board and Batten projects that I have done, so if they don’t match that is why! This is also a great case of do as I say not as I do.

Head to your local Lowes or Home Depot. In the lumber section they have big 4×8 sheets of MDF. MDF is a really dense particle board that has a flat smooth finish. I have encountered 2 different types; one has a little bit larger pieces of wood in it (like you can actually see the particles) and the second looks really similar to cardboard. The first one is the one that I prefer. It takes a cut cleaner and doesn’t seem to soak in the paint as badly on the cut edges.

There are quite a few different thicknesses of MDF. I usually get the 1/2” but in Hailee’s Room Makeover we used 3/4” and it looked awesome. Its just going to be a personal preference yo.

Ok so now that you have your giant sheet of MDF you need it cut. Home Depot and Lowes have huge saws that will rip cut it into pretty perfect pieces. Just tell them the thickness that you want it to be. I prefer something between 3-4”. So you will end up with a bunch of pieces of MDF that are 4”x8’.

Now the order that you put everything together is what is hard sometimes. I have tried it 5 different ways and this is the way I prefer to do it.

Start by painting your wall the color you want it to be. It is MUCH easier to roll on the color without a bazillion corners. Because we were going to have someone come and spray Hailee’s we didn’t do this but you an see how we took the top wall color down far enough that we didn’t have to go back and touch it up.

When you are figuring out the measurements for your Board and Batten take the width of your wall and subtract the total width of your boards, then divide it by the # of sections that you want That will give you your spacing between boards.

For example:

Lets say our wall is 5 feet (60 inches) and you want 4 sections in your Board and Batten. You had your pieces cut to 3”wide strips and you are using 4 so that is 12” total width , your math would look like this: (60-12)/4. Each of the spaces between your boards is going to be 12”.

So the next step is to cut a guide piece that is 12” long. That way you can perfectly space your boards all across the wall.

Start by putting your cross board (or boards depending on the length of the wall) up first. If you are doing an entire wall floor to ceiling then place it right against the ceiling. If you are starting the B&B partway down the wall use a laser level to place your board.

Once your cross piece is up you will start putting your first board up. This would be the board right against the edge of your wall. Make sure that it is level ALL THE WAY DOWN. The easiest way to level it is to start in the middle with one nail then go down and level and nail the bottom. Then go up to the top and do the same. Then secure it more with a few nails in between. And don’t be surprised if your walls aren’t level, just make sure your boards are. You can go back and fill the gaps with putty.

Continue this for the entire wall.

If you are doing cross boards now is when those are installed. Cut a guide piece and do it the same way you did before but this time it will measure vertically instead of horizontally. The white board in this picture is my guide.

Now I am going to tell you a little secret. Some of you might hate me for life but, you gotta do what you gotta do.

At Hailee’s house there was NO WAY the boards were going to wrap perfectly from her hallway entrance over to her kitchen entrance. I mean that is like a 1 in a million chance. So we started at the hallway entrance and went 1/2 way across the windows and stopped. Then we went to the kitchen entrance and went the opposite way and stopped 1/2 way across the windows again. The reason is because of the curtains and the couch were always going to be there (yes, even if she moves the couch you can’t tell that a board is missing) That way it looks perfect and the wonky is hidden! (You can see where we skipped the board in the picture below)

Once all of your boards are up it is time to putty. I prefer to use drywall spackle. There is a special kind that you can get that starts pink and turns white when it dries. Fill in all of your seams and nail holes.

While that is drying its time to caulk. If you want it to look legit you wont skip this step. It makes such a big difference.

You can buy white or clear caulk, it doesn’t matter, just make sure its paintable. I like to use the smaller squeeze bottles of caulk because the caulking gun hurts my hand… Cut the tip at an angle, there is a guide on the tip of the caulk on where to cut it. With the long tip on the top gently squeeze a line of caulk into the corner where your board meets your wall. Then with a damp rag over your fingertip wipe all the way down the caulk line. This will get off all of the excess.

This next step is extra fast if you have a palm sander. Take a piece of fine grit sandpaper to the drywall putty once it is dry to smooth it out. I also run it along the edges of all of the boards to soften them just a hair.

Take a damp washcloth or a piece of tack cloth and wipe off all of the dust. You need a clean surface to paint.

If your board and batten ends on an exposed corner and the corners of you wall are rounded you will need to fill in the huge gap. Just use the same drywall putty as before and know that it will take a while to dry. It doesn’t have to be perfectly smooth but just make sure that it doesn’t dip below where your edge is. You will lightly sand it when its dry and it will be seamless!

We also had to do that on this corner because of the curve in the wall.

Now its time to paint! I 100% recommend using a Purdy White Dove Roller. It will give you a much smoother texture than a regular roller and last for SO much longer.

You can prime the MDF if you want, but I usually don’t. I just use a paint and primer in one. You will probably have to do a couple of coats on the edges of your boards because the MDF soaks it up. Especially if you got the MDF that I hate. I use a Purdy brush for this because it holds a lot of paint and lets face it, Purdy brushes make you look like a better painter than you really are.

Hailee is one of my friends turned Bestie For Life (on account of practically living together the last 2.5 weeks…) She had just got new couches and asked if I would help her rearrange her furniture….that was the understatement of the century. And she sort of had no idea what she was getting herself into.

This is the before:

And the After:

Before:

After:

Before:

And After:

And Before:

And After:

There are SO many awesome projects that I cant wait to share with you guys! Here are a few of my favorites:

Can anyone guess what is on that old yard sale dresser? It starts with a PVC and ends with Pipe.

The before on this lamp is crazy. I covered the shade in yarn and gave it an Ombre effect, which I am sort of obsessed with right now.

I also used an Ombre technique on the rug. Its hard to tell because it looks like the couch is making a shadow on it, but really the hounds tooth is fading in and then back out

One of my FAVORITE projects is the curtains. The rod is made out of rope and eyehooks. One end is tied in a fat knot and the other end is secured onto a rope cleat.

Did you notice that we built shelves in the open window in the wall? Huge holes like that can be such a waste of space. By filling it in with open shelving you still have the open feel but you can decorate! Holla!!

Ok here are a few more shots for you to enjoy:

We have some Hanging Basket Chandy’s going on in the hallway to replace the boob lights.

Doing this room with Hailee and her amazing husband Mark was such an wonderful experience. It is EXACTLY what an Epic Room Makeover is supposed to be like. And believe it or not when I was driving home from Hailee’s this afternoon after taking pictures I started to cry! I mean, we still have the rest of her house (shhh…don’t tell Mark I said that) AND she lives right down the street; but I have developed such a great love for this family it made me sad that I wouldn’t have an excuse to hang out with them everyday!

After doing the original Epic Room Makeover I learned a lot, after working with Hailee and Mark I don’t feel overwhelmed and exhausted thinking about doing another one. So wait for the announcement in the spring cause an Epic Room Makeover might be coming to your house!

Its like the Epic Room Makeover x 100000000000000000.

Today I am partying with ScotchBlue and these awesome bloggers to show you some fun things that you can do.

Welcome to the ScotchBlue Painting Party!
You’ll also get a chance to win some ScotchBlue Painter’s Tape so you can create a project of your own. Just read to the end to find out how!

So I decided to give you a sneak peek into Hailee’s hallway. Pretty much this is one of my most favorite painting projects ever.

And it was super easy!

Start by measuring your stripes. I used a paint stir stick for all of the measurements. Literally all of them.

There was a lot of changing things up as we went. So for you to duplicate the end result you will just have to hold on tight. The pictures may seem out of order but it will turn out fine. Promise.

First you paint your base color:

Then you are going to take a level or a laser level and draw light pencil lines around the space.

After you do that its time to tape! I love the Edgelock tons. It had great adhesion.

One thing to remember that when you are taping off lines you need to put the tape on the inside of the lines that are going to be your wall color. That way your stripes will be the same.

Now for the chevron… Like I said earlier the idea evolved like it so often does here…

Mark the center of your stripe: (I did this with masking tape)

Then measure the distance that you want your zig to go and draw a line.

Start your tape at the top of one line and bring it down to the bottom of the next line (or visa versa)

Here is where we changed it up. See in the above pic how the points cross into the horizontal line? That is cause I was originally going to paint just the stripes teal, so in order for the chevrons that have points we had to move the horizontal tape.

To get a perfect point just use a razor blade. You cant tell I promise.

This is what it should look like when its done.

The secret to getting perfect lines is to paint your base color over the top of the tape. Works every time!

Here is what it looks like with the tape off of the taupe stripe and still on the teal stripe:

Peel while you paint is still wet and you will get cleaner lines!

And there you go!! Awesome project right!?

Hello friends! I feel like I have been gone all week! (Probably cause I have!) Hailey and I are workin like crazy ladies to get her living room makeover done…which might have migrated into her hallway last night….. Her husband Mark was REALLY excited about that.

So if you follow me on Facebook you know we ventured out yesterday as our alter egos Wanda (Hailey) and Sylvia (Me). Wanda and Sylvia originally appeared last year while making a back to school video for the PTA. They show up at lots of fun school events and TOTALLY rock everyones world.

So today we decided to head out and liven St. George up a little. Here is an afternoon in the life of Wanda and Sylvia:

Heading to the DI (Utah’s version of Goodwill).

Look at these lamps!!

Little Boy Blue and Little Bo Peep lamps. Pretty much amazing. I think that they are right at home in Wanda’s Camper.

Now you MUST tell me if people are like this at your thrift store. Its crazy what happens when they bring out new goods.

Plus there is some seriously awesome junk there:

We did pass on the lamps. I know you are disappointed. But these are the real scores that day:

Then after the DI we went to Walmart to get supplies for the days projects. Apparently Sylvia loves Krylon just as much as Mandi does…

Then the best part ever. We went to Durango’s (the restaurant that my hubs runs) went through the line, got our food, paid for it AND were sitting down eating for 5 minutes before Court recognized me. He literally looked directly at me 3 times and didn’t recognize me.

At. All.

Plus I also learned that I suck at keeping a straight face.

Have a wonderful weekend! Hopefully we will have a killer room to show you next post!!!

We are working through Hailey’s living room project at warp speed and I have tutorials in the works but here is my question for you today.

Is it better to wait a couple more days and post the reveal first, then all of the tutorials the following week?

Its such a dramatic change that I want the knock your socks off factor. Which you wont get as much if I am revealing projects all along the way…

So what do you think? Really I want your opinion (lurkers this means you too!)

Also I am FREAKING excited to announce that because of all of you my Project for Krylon’s Dual Duel made it into the TOP 4!!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

I would LOVE to win and would really appreciate a vote.

Also did you know that every time you vote you are entered into a weekly drawing for a case of Dual? Any color you want.

There is no liking a page or a 20 minute registration to vote. You just enter your email address if you want to win the Dual. (If you don’t want to win a case of it I don’t think you have to enter your email, but I am not sure)

So go vote pretty please!! I am #2 with the famous Acid Mirrors!!

So far I have shared quite a few tutorials and info about the Epic Room Makeover. There are also a few of the really big projects that I am working on the tutorials for (and maybe a video or two) but today I wanted to share a little about the smaller things that don’t really need a tutorial but are hugely important in the grand scheme of things!

I found these nightstands at the DI (utah’s version of Goodwill) they were in 2 different parts of the store and the difference in the prices was CRAZY.

One was priced at $10.00 and the other was priced at $50.00. NUTS right? So what did I do? What I do best. I called one of the managers over and pointed out the craziness. He was so nice, he ended up selling them for $25.00 total. Did you know that most of the time all you have to do is ask? I don’t get a discount every time I ask, but its worth it when I do!

Look at their cute little feet and wheels!!

So first things first. Remove the hardware, tape the things that you don’t want painted and get to work. I painted these with Krylon’s Classic Gray. (ps for those of you who follow me on FB know that as I was cleaning out my garage I posted a question asking which color of spray paint you think I have the most of and Classic Gray is the winner!) Also I love how it looks pigeon toed!

I didn’t glaze them because lets face it, not everything needs to be glazed to be awesome. I love how they turned out and I wish I could find some more for my Master!

Now to the lamps. Oh the sweet, sweet lamps. They started out as your run of the mill sassy brassy thrift store goodness. Actually I had an impossible time finding a matching set but these were pretty dang close. And perfection is boring AND lame, so there ya go.

Now if you have followed my blog for more than 5 minutes you know that I am a Kilz primer and Krylon spray paint girl. But there are sometimes products that are better suited for stuff like this…Enter da da da!

Krylon Duel!

Kilz is too heavy of a primer to use on something like this. Dual is PERFECTION in a can. Make sure you wipe them down really well first and get to spraying. I didn’t have Sun Yellow Dual but I did have white so I painted it white first and then Sun Yellow. One of my fave things about not using Kilz is that the lamps had a really high gloss to them. (Kilz will take that away, did you know that?)

The lampshades are from Ikea.

They come like this:

If you are going to put something on them now is the time. I used my Silhouette to cut out a man and a woman figure.

See the little holes? That is where the metal piece goes to hold it on the lamp.

So some people may wonder why. Why in the world did you put the universal sign for a restroom by these peoples bed?

To that I say, why not? Its fun and quirky and pretty hilarious. Adding a small touch of humor to a room makes it REAL. It makes people feel comfortable there. Remember my lampshade? And the pillow in my bedroom?

If you feel like you are struggling to make a space YOURS then adding something that you LOVE especially if its quirky instantly injects life into it. Try it, I triple dog dare you.

This is not a tutorial post. Not a real one anyway. The reason? Upholstery is HARD. And its different every time you do it, and you have to learn and adapt the entire time.

So this is simply a look at my awesome chair post.

Remember what it looked like just a few short days ago?

I found it at a consignment store and talked them down to $20.00.

I taped off all the edges of the wood so that I could paint

It got a coat of Krylon’s Classic Gray. I mean you can never go wrong with gray, right?

I used white duck cloth as my fabric. It’s a really thick canvas that I love SOOO much. You can buy it at Joanns. I think its $10.99 /yd so you will for sure want to use a coupon.

I used 4 yards on a chair this size.

I started by attaching it to the backside of the chair. I did not take the original fabric off the back and so I didn’t have a template for it. So I just put my huge piece of fabric on and started stapling… then I trimmed off all the excess

The back cushion was a little harder.

I took the old fabric off and used it as a pattern to cut the shapes and seamed the together.

The key to a professional looking upholstery job is to pull the fabric TIGHT. As tight as you can.

Same for the cute little arm cushions. TIGHT TIGHT TIGHT!

I found the coral fabric for the piping in the clearance seciton at Joanns too. I used the backside as the front because the front had this sparkly iridescent crap all over it. It was not awesome…

I used my hot glue gun to attach it and I cant believe how much it used! This chair took 12 yards of cording. Seriously. So my advice is to take the amount you would think and double it and add 2 yards. Cause it used a crapload.

Then as I was cutting out the cushion tragedy struck. I am normally pretty careful when I use my rotary cutter, because duck cloth is pretty thick and my blade was pretty dull (can you tell where this story is going?…)I was having a rough time cutting through the fabric and was pushing really hard and cut a HUGE chunck off of my pointer finger. Like a freakin CHUNK. It was disgusting to see it stuck to the blade. And it bled like a freaker. So there may or may not be some small blood drops on this particualr chair that I couldn’t get off. (If you have a great tip let me know!!)
