Metal Siding That Looks Like Real Wood!!

By Mandi 07/11/2017

Hands down the most requested info about my in-laws house is where they sourced the wood-look siding. Its crazy good, even standing right underneath it you’d swear it was wood.

So here are all the details!

It’s made by a company called Longboard

They have 20 different colors and wood types. The one we went with was Light National Walnut thought we also really loved the Dark Acacia and the Dark National Walnut.

Its significantly more expensive than real wood but the upside is that it doesn’t have any maintenance once its installed. Real wood requires staining and/or clear coating every 4-5-ish years (which is pretty spot on based on our experience with our exterior shutters).

Another advantage is that it looks absolutely perfect. There isn’t any warping, knot holes, or unevenness at all.

I don’t think you can order it online, you need to go through a dealer but if you put your zip in than it will tell you surrounding shops in your area.

In other news, construction on the Merc starts TODAY!!!! Glory glory I am so excited I can’t even handle it!!!

  1. Whoa! That’s beautiful and so worth the extra cost. Maintenance gets forgotten sometimes anyway, and if I had to get that high up to maintain something, I probably never would.

  2. The extra cost would absolutely be off-set by the maintenance costs. We have real wood planks for siding, real wood board & batten, as well as real wood roof shingles (with rock 1/4 way up from the bottom) on a 40’x60′ shop we live in while we save to build our home. We have had to re-stain it twice now in 6 years (we have really cold winters and serious winds that, combined with the summer sun really weather it quickly). We used very high quality commercial products to coat it at 40% off sale and did the labor ourselves with the help of a rental lift and a commercial grade sprayer, all DIY. Tons of work just this spring and we spent about $2100. It looks amazing right now, and we hope this time lasts longer than 3 years, but even if it lasts 5 years, we’re talking at least $10,000 in 20 years ($14,000 or more at the rate we’ve re-done it so far–at that is doing it the cheapest way we can with DIY). Estimates for someone to come do it for us was really expensive. We love the look of wood, but that is pretty expensive to maintain if you have very much of it. Thanks for sharing; we may use this product when we eventually build our house. The only downside is that you don’t get the real wood texture and variances–I love the knot holes and various subtle differences found in nature that is otherwise absent in faux products. You can’t have everything, though. 🙂

    1. Hi Jennifer,

Just a random commenter here. I saw this blog post and loved it, but wanted to let you know that there are a lot of aluminum siding companies that offer knots and textures. Longboard is one, but there’s also Luxyclad – a comparable product which has many films with knots. Hope that helps you for future reference, and good luck building your home! Sometimes, you can have everything! 😉

  3. Thank-you for the wonderful blog post Mandi! Your project looks amazing, and great choice using Light national walnut.

  4. I called to get pricing on longboard…$20/square foot! That’s way too expensive for any real project. Sorry, longboard.
