Smart Home Lighting: The Switch or The Bulb?

By Mandi 07/31/2018

The Merc is definitely the coolest 100 yr old building in town, and it recently became the smartest. Who says you cant teach old dogs new tricks?! You can read all about the simple smart home upgrades that we made here, but there is one that I want to highlight even more. Cause it’s my favorite and hopefully your first real step into smart home upgrades.

Raise your hand if you’ve got an Amazon Echo ??‍♀️ More than 16% of the people living in the US have one (how crazy is that!?) They’re wickedly useful and extremely approachable tech. Echo’s are great, but their magic really shines when they integrate with other smart devices in your house. The first upgrade should be your lighting.

Caséta by Lutron is the gold standard for smart lighting. Smart lighting comes in a few forms, switches (like the Caséta) and bulbs. I’ve tried both and hands down prefer the switches. Especially if you’ve got more than one light bulb in a light (for instance a chandelier like the one in our entryway with 9 light bulbs) or have more than one light connected to a switch (like our kitchen with 8 can lights that come on at the same time)

Installing a Caséta switch is simple, even the most novice DIYer can handle it, pinky swear!

But the best part is that when it’s all said and done, you can use an app, or Alexa to control it. On, off, or dimmed Caséta handles it all. We LOVE ours!! Do you have one yet?

  1. Yes, it’s the best!! My husband sells lighting and lighting controls so when we built our house it was his #1 priority and being Philly locals, of course we went with Lutron. Our entire place is on a Caseta system with LED bulbs – I will say it is so nice to set routines or ‘settings.’ My favorite is telling Alexa that “It’s time to cook” and she turns on my kitchen downlights, pendents, sconces and undercabinets! Also “Time to go upstairs” and she sets up my bedroom and turns off downstairs, I am a spoiled girl!
