Hi hi!! Man I have missed you guys! Apologies for the radio silence, I have been travelling and spending some much needed quality time with my mom and sisters. But now I am home, and I have so many things to tell you about!!
If you have been wondering what is happening with The Nugget, don’t worry, I haven’t given up on it! In fact, its just the opposite. I needed to take a step back for a little bit and really look at it critically (without wanting to burn it to the ground). After really thinking about it and going back though all of the projects and design choices it became clear that the problem I was having was with the backsplash. I LOVE the green penny tile. But. It just wasn’t working with the other things that I loved more.
So this happened.
And this.
And now I am ready for tile round 2.
I also ordered some half-round molding from homedepot.com for the cabinet doors. I think I found a solution, that makes the little knob a bigger part of the design vs just being a teensy knob on a door. As soon as I hit publish on this post, I am heading outside to get to work so hopefully I will have an update for you by Friday!
Great I really didn’t like that back splash at all, to busy.
Oh man! Talk about guts! I’m sure it took some immense courage to tear down something you put your heart into… but I’m crazy excited to see what you replace it with. I can see great things in this guy’s future. Go Mandi!
At first I was horrified. How could you ever get rid of something so pretty as that backsplash?! And then I got really excited because I know whatever idea you’re toying with now will blow that backsplash out of the water! I can’t wait to see what’s next for the nugget.
good move, i didn’t think the tile worked either. Although it was a great design and color, but not for that area.
A very bold move to tear out something that you spent so much time and energy on! I’m just glad you are back! Can’t wait to see the new and improved backsplash 🙂
What! I want the courage and conviction you have. I’m way too scared to make a change like that and think I have to live with my “mistakes” (?). You are inspiring!
I agree. I love the penny tile but I really don’t think it worked in the space. Can’t wait to see what you have in mind!
You win some, you lose some — I can’t wait to see the final nugget. 🙂
It makes me so happy that you took the tile down (as if it’s my nugget and I have a say, ha!) I tried soo hard to get on board with the mint penny tile, I really wanted to love it. I did love it in pictures up close, but with “big picture” pictures as a whole, it just wasn’t working! I cannot WAIT to see what’s next. 🙂
I’m excited that you’re back at it. But I’m also surprised by the level of feedback about your choices. I say swing your hammer however you like! I trust your judgement because it’s your space!
Hi, Mandy! I came across your blog when searching for “diy mid century furniture.” Boy am I glad I did! I, too, am a thrift store junkie. I love that you call your style “fearless”! The best I could come up with for mine was a multi-multi-multi hyphenate that could best be summed up as eclectic….only eclectic is so broad these days. So I am still trying to figure it out. I can’t wait to read more of your blog, and your tutorials! I hope to start my own blog back up soon, with more photos, ideas, and hopefully a completed project (or a few!).
Hi Mandi, I put those exact same tiles on the floor of my powder room, and then pulled them up. I actually had to hire someone to pull them up for me because I was too sad to do it myself. I was so excited to see them make an appearance in the Nugget. But alas your green penny tiles met the same fate as mine. Sometimes when you love something you have to let it go. Can’t wait to see what happens next.
Have to say, I concur that it didn’t work, but I wasn’t going to say a thing since it’s not my space to live in. I applaud you because I think after all of the work, I would have left it. Been there, done that. Several. times. I think my hubby would’ve killed me, too, ha! Can’t wait to see what other awesomeness you come up with!
Can’t wait to see what you replace it with, i’m sure whatever it is it’ll be AH-MAZING as always! Xo
Ermmmm. Is it just me but how awesome is that wallpaper that you’ve just exposed & unleashed there? I know some of it looks a bit tired but surely you can preserve this in some way? Whitewash or paint in some missing bits – heck paint in some missing petals bright pink and make it a piece of art! Chuck some glass up over it and there you have it. Easy option I think:-) Xx ps, love your style.
I thought the same thing! What awesome wallpaper!
Yes!! That’s what I was thinking!! That wallpaper is amazing… and probably The Nug’s original, right? Even if just salvaging a bit for a frame or something, I feel like it’s earned a spot! As if it’s mine to say… =)
Been there, done that. About 4 months after I repainted the whole basement, I just couldn’t stand it. Needed a white that was even “whiter”. My husband rolled his eyes as I brought out the painting stuff again, bought more paint, yadda yadda. Even he agrees now that it was the totally right thing to have done. I think it is a secure person who can admit that something needs tweeked.
Seems like everyone’s excited to see what’s coming! I, also wasn’t fond of the penny tile and can’t wait to see what you put in place of it. This project is pretty freaking awesome and I’m loving all the real time blogging you have been doing on projects. It’s nice to know that even someone as awesome as you are still doesn’t get it right the first time every time! Can’t wait to see more. Keep up the awesome work!!
The penny tile was the only thing working 🙁
Awww, I really loved that penny tile!
Good for you for having the guts to pull it out once you felt that it wasn’t working. I agree that the penny tile just didn’t jive with the feel of the rest of the trailer, but for my money, the problem was the grout color more than the tile selection. I would recommend that next time you make some sample boards and try out different color grouts before finishing your new installation.
Just seconding everyone’s comments commending you on the fearlessness it takes to rip up something you’ve just spent time & money on. Perfect example of why this blog is so amazing. It’s real life & totally relatable amid so many that are the exact opposite. We know it’ll be amazing! Can’t wait!!
Well, now I feel like a coward. When you posted that you were not happy with how the kitchen was coming together, I wanted to say that I liked the cabinets, and it was the tile that wasn’t working, but I thought that would just be mean because there was no way the tile was going anywhere. Was I wrong! You are indeed brave! Most people would not be able to let go of something they loved and worked so hard on. The new tile is perfect! Yet another vote for how you share the whole process. Seeing you rip something out should give many diy’ers courage to do the same!
