Laundry Humor and $500 Home Depot Giveaway!

By Mandi 08/08/2013

Remember that one time that I was planning a really awesome laundry room post and then went out of town for the entire summer and started 3 other rooms? Yeah, that was fun.

My laundry room is like the armpit of well, my entire city. It makes Court crazy. I have no problem washing and drying the clothes,  its the putting them away part that always gets my goat. Remember learning about the Water Cycle in the 2nd grade? That is precisely what happens to the laundry at my house. It is an ever present round of rewashing.

One of the problems? My laundry room is not super functional. The worst part? I don’t even have pictures to show you,  because then I would actually have to do laundry. (Court are you behind all of this?!)

There is no counter,  small shallow cabinets,  bad linoleum,  beige paint,  and not a lot of room.

Do you know what I want? I want a laundry room that will hide all of my dirty laundry so it looks like I am on top of it.

THAT is a laundry room makeover I could get behind.

So. Instead of a mind blowing makeover (pop over and check out Brooke’s or Jenny’s if you need some of that kind of inspiration) I thought I would share with you some art that I feel would be super appropriate given the current state of affairs.

Since I am clearly not the expert in this situation and in all actuality need a laundry intervention of my own,  here are a few tips from Jenny Komenda about sprucing up your laundry room.

Brilliant Ideas by Jenny Komenda

Dealing with a dark, cave-like laundry room is a chore in and of itself!By taking off the doors on a few of your upper cabinets, you’ll open up the space and create a place to store baskets. In this laundry room, we assigned baskets for every member of the house, which makes sorting a breeze!

Why not decoupage or paint the insides of your cabinets for a fun pop of color? It’s a guaranteed smile each and every time you reach for your detergent. Also don’t ignore the door. Adhere some cork panels on the inside of the cabinet doors and create a space to pin all those stain removal tips.

Don’t like the cabinets, floors and countertops in your laundry room? Every surface can be painted or resurfaced! We updated this room with paint and a concrete overlay for less than $30 in materials. Say goodbye to the outdated linoleum, brick pavers and old, dark cabinets.

A rolling laundry butler can be your best friend, doing triple duty with a hanging bar, a rolling basket and a drying rack. It’s the perfect choice for smaller laundry rooms that haven’t been updated in a few decades.

Don’t neglect your laundry room walls! Hanging interesting art and mirrors will elevate your room and make it feel less utilitarian and a little homier. Suddenly those 400 loads of laundry most of us will do this year might actually be enjoyable!

A folding station makes all the difference. Use a slab of stone or a simple piece of painted MDF on top of washer/dryer units to create a folding station that also prevent socks from slipping in between the appliances!

And now for the REALLY good part.

We bought our Maytag washer and dryer from The Home Depot 3 years ago and LOVE them. The only downside is that it doesn’t come with a Fold/Put Away option. Because goodness knows it comes with everything else.

Right now Maytag is running a great promo. To celebrate the #BrilliantHEClean campaign, they are offering a $100 gift card with the purchase of a Maytag Powerwash machine & 150 oz. Tide.

And here is the BEST part,  they are giving away a $5000 laundry room makeover!!

  1. I love the slab concrete look for your laundry room counter tops! Makes the room feel like a cool things happen in there. What is the maintenance like?

  2. Nope! I have tried to be a "good girl" and keep up with it…but I just can't. It is so hard to keep the laundry bin empty!

  3. My laundry tends to get done when I run out of clean towels (or sheets or pants, whatever) and/or when I have new fabric that needs washed before I can make something pretty with it! I also daydream about one day having a laundry room…

  4. HAHA, I hate putting the laundry away too. Washing isn't that bad but folding or ironing ugh…I hate it! I refuse to iron clothes.
Anyway I love Jenny's laundry room makeover, she totally rules!

  5. I don't do too bad keeping up, probably because all my family's clothes are located in the basement with the washer and dryer. It makes all the difference in the world because I can just put everything away as I get them out of the dryer! Here's to hoping I win!

  6. Ugh…not really. I am WITH you on having no real problem washing and drying…but all that folding, folding, FOLDING. Especially when half the clothes in my house are for my minis. It takes hours. There are so many other things I'd rather be doing. Like spray painting something. Or pretty much anything.

  7. Everyone has clean socks and underwear. They can find them in a basket…somewhere. It's really funny when the kids don't even look in their drawers for their clothes. Argh, I really need an organized laundry room!

  8. When I am home during the summer, I'm pretty good about keeping up with the laundry. I've been back at school for four days and it's already piled sky high. I need a laundry fairy to help me!

  9. IDefinitely DoNot Stay On Top Of My Laundry (Just Ask The Three Piles Sitting On The Floor In Front Of Me)

  10. I hate to admit it, but i do not stay on top of my laundry. It is all currently hidden in a closet. Out of sight, out of mind!

  11. Laundry is like a line of ants at a picnic…. They just keep coming. In fact, I have a load of laundry going right now and another pile on the floor.

  12. I more or less stay on top on laundry… but that's just because I only do mine. Fiance is on his own! There are 4 flights of stairs between us and the basement laundry room and 2 washers/dryers for the whole building (12 units). I try and go at more random times so I don't go all the way downstairs only to find that everything is being used and then I have to haul everything back up.

  13. I do a wash almost every day. Sometimes two on one day, and then skip a day or two. Then Saturday I catch up. It works for me.

  14. I hate ironing; thanks for the reminder that I need to do that today.

Thanks for the giveaway (and for making it so easy to enter)

  15. I've been doing my own laundry since I was 11. My mom always said that if you start a load, you have to finish it to the end on that day {putting it all away}. I try really hard to stick to that. That being said, I have a load sitting in the washer from yesterday, a load sitting in the dryer from yesterday, and two loads folded sitting in a laundry basket from two days ago. So, yeah. Sorry, mom.

  16. My laundry gets washed and dried, and it even gets folded…. but then it sits in the basket until I run out of underwear because I just can't bring myself to carry the basket ALL THE WAY UPSTAIRS and hang stuff up.

  17. My laundry room is a dark hole in the basement. At some point I'm going to use your concrete painting directions and brighten up what I can. Not that that will get any more laundry done.

  18. I'm pretty good about staying on top of the laundry right now because it's just me and my husband. Once we have kids, though, I have a feeling I won't be as good at it!

  19. I stay on top of the laundry because my husband does his own. I will make his dinner and lunch every day, clean the whole house, but when it comes to his laundry that's where I draw the line and like him to do it. We don't have any kids yet, so I may have more of a problem when there are a bunch of little clothes to wash all the time. 🙂

  20. I am pretty good about staying on top of the laundry, but for some reason I hate folding socks. Those will sit in the basket for a week or more… hubby has learned to just go to the laundry basket when he needs socks!

  21. Our washer and dryer beep when the load is done, if it weren't for that we'd forget that it's there until we ran out of clean clothes……

  22. i designate wednesdays as "laundry days" and just try to stick to it – i hate every minute of it, and often treat myself to Starbucks as a reward/incentive 🙂

  23. We live in a super tiny apartment so we only get a washer and it's in our kitchen. Because I don't want to use the slow-drying, costly dryers here I hang dry everything. To keep up with it all, I do one medium sized load every day. Every day I hang dry it and put away the clothes from the day before. I also only fold linens, and my husband's t-shirts. Everything else is hung or stuffed in drawers. I HATE folding!

  24. It's easy to stay on top of laundry – only have one person to do laundry for! Love your laundry room by the way. It's so big and pretty – I bet it makes doing laundry a pleasant experience. Wish I had room for one of those carts on wheels – so cute!

  25. It is impossible I feel like for me to stay on top of my laundry! As soon as I think I have everything done, there always seems to have yet another piece of clothing to wash! keshakeke(at)gmail(dot)com

  26. I can NEVER stay on top of my laundry, luckiy I have an overflowing closet and awesome procrastination skills, so I wait until I'm down to almost NO clean clothes and then do all my laundry at once!!

  27. Thought I would get ahead and teach the kids to do their own laundry — Yikes! just made more work for me as they just leave their dirty clothes on the floor in the laundry room and will touch only their laundry…

  28. I don't stay on top of laundry. When someone complains of no underwear, then I start moving. That last sign is perfect for my laundry room!!

  29. I do at least a load a day, but shoot for two & catch up when I have time. There's lots of little people here & we cloth diaper so I don't have a choice.

  30. I'm never on top of laundry! Even if it's lucky enough to get folded, it never quite seems to make it to the drawers.

  31. My answer is sometimes. Depends on a variety of factors mainly my motivation. I do have a folding table which helps a lot but would love to make our laundry room more comfortable and functional.

  32. there's just 2 of us, but it's still a chore. I made a promise long ago to fold stuff from the dryer while it was still warm. I won't reveal the percentage of broken promises…….

  33. Define "stay on top of"…I mostly do? Sometimes? Just don't look at that heaping pile of clean laundry in that basket over there that needs to be put away…at least it was just washed yesterday, right?

  34. my husband helps a lot…he washes/dries and i fold (most of the time)…let's just say there is usually always a clean load in the dryer.

  35. I just moved into a new home where the washer/dryer are in the basement. In my old house the washer/dryer were on the second floor – right outside the bathroom. It was a dream and so, so, so easy to keep on top of it since the bedrooms were all on the second floor as well. But now we're working on a new configuration and well, honestly, I'm falling behind (that may also be due to unpacking a trillion moving boxes). Love these tips!

  36. My laundry needs a makeover in a bad way! It also doubles (triples?) as the back entrance/tool shed/ cleaning closet so it is a mess of dog leashes, dirty laundry, paint cans, and cleaning supplies!

  37. Yeah No. I don't even have a laundry room just an unfinished basement. Water meter guy had to come replace meter I was panicking htinking I had to get all the laundry clered out, then I decided I wouldn't in hopes someone's laundry area looked worse than mine

  38. I'm totally the same way – I don't mind sorting the laundry, moving it from machine to machine, etc. – but putting it away is the WORST.

  39. I don't mind folding b/c I do that while watching tv and it's a reason to watch tv without feeling bad about it. However, putting it away is always the worst. Sometimes I just re-wear the folded clothing from the laundry basket b/c it's easier than putting it away.

  40. I guess I pretty much stay on top of the laundry but I do hate putting it away. Why is that???? Mom always taught me to multi-task by starting a job that can work without your presence (laundry, dishwasher, cleaner on items to soak). Then you can go on with other things(i.e. shopping, redecorating, painting?). When you come back they are done. Well almost. You have to put them away and therein lies the problem. Oh well! Close.

  41. Monday is my laundry day…I wash it all, but like you–the "putting away" doesn't always happen in a timely fashion. The kids are supposed to fold and put away their own clothes–sometimes I withhold TV privileges until they do it!

  42. I can't say I totally stay on top of it, but I try to just to a little bit whenever I walk by. Throw in a load….try to throw it in the dryer before it smells musty, then put one stack away at a time.

  43. I wait until we're all out of clothes and then I do it all at the same time. It takes me all day to do the laundry, but then I don't have to worry about it for another 2 weeks. And if you pop in a movie while you're folding, it goes by pretty fast.

  44. I don't even have a laundry room, I have a laundry closet. And I say about once every few months everything gets put away. Normally my clothes live in the laundry basket, and everyone else's clothes get put away.

  45. There's only 2 of us now, but back in the day there were 6 of us. When the kids turned seven I taught them how to do their own laundry. They only made the mistake of leaving crayons in their pockets once because they didn't like wearing green or pink underwear.

  46. I do all of my laundry on Sunday, that way I know it's my laundry day. Sometimes they don't get folded til Monday or Tuesday, but at least they're all washed and dried on one day!

    demureprincess7(at)gmail(dot)com

  47. The only way I stay on top of my laundry is by having a nagging husband to remind me that he too needs to wash his clothes and I can't use the dryer as a dresser.

  48. With only two of us living in this house, it is easy to keep up with the laundry. It's just easy to see when our hampers are full and go from there. Now when the baby comes in December, hopefully I can still keep up with it.

  49. haha love this post! And all the comments that followed! I am semi able to stay up on my laundry because of three factors: I have a little family (3 peeps), a tiny house, and a husband that will do a few loads a week. However, my dressers and closets are not nearly as organized as I would like them to be after I get the clothes put away. I love the idea of taking the doors off the cabinets in the laundry room to open it up! We have our furnace and water heater in our 1950's cottage laundry room so it's an interesting setup and is at the top of my remodel project list! :))))

  50. I stay on top of the laundry, but it's frustrating when I finish the loads and already there's more stuff in the laundry basket.

    Name on rafflecopter: Mary Happymommy

  51. It's just my husband and I, but I swear between his military uniforms, work out clothes, and regular clothes I still have a hard time keeping up. Can't wait until we add babies to it all 😉

  52. I stay on top of the laundry. It's probably the one thing I am pretty OCD about. Nobody is allowed to touch the laundry unless they're putting it away after I've folded or hung it on a hanger!

  53. I'm terrible at keeping up with the laundry! I don't mind doing the laundry as much as I mind folding and hanging clean laundry. Which is why there is always a pile of clean clothes stacked in our laundry room/bedroom/wherever I can find a spot to throw clean laundry!

  54. Yep! I taught my boys to do their own laundry when they turned 12. Now it's a breeze to finish the rest. I separate things out into baskets by load and dump a basket in the washer when it's full.

  55. I used to be really good at getting washing, drying, folding and putting away done in fast order, but since my pregnant daughter and her two toddlers moved in, its been harder to do! Finding stray toddler socks all over is also become an issue. I actaully enjoy doing laundry!

  56. You know how to make laundry funny. That takes serious talent. Speaking of which, I have to finish laundry at this very moment. (The dryer legit buzzed as I typed that.)

We're spending so much money fixing our house to sell to SOMEONE ELSE. Blargh. I'd love $500 to Home Depot for US to benefit from, not someone else.

  57. I'm better at staying on top of it than I used to be…but putting it away is the part I truly detest! Maybe if I had a cute clothespin frame I'd be more inspired!

  58. Obsessed with Jenny's laundry room makeover. I have had the same load of laundry in the dryer for days with no motivation to unload and fold it! I think a little makeover might help the situation!

  59. Honestly, I have only stayed on top of my laundry since moving into my current home. The washer/dryer is in the family room/kitchen so I can "do laundry" while watching TV or playing video games. Proximity.

Putting laundry away? Perfect activity during commercial.

I feel like a genius for somehow rationalizing watching Doctor Who marathons.

  60. Yes,…I actually do stay on top of my laundry. My husband or myself will get it started on Saturday. BUT….as far as putting the last load away like the whites,….they are still in my dryer! "Cant have it al!!" lol

  61. Laundry is my least favorite thing. Lately I have tried hang drying, outside, with my kids. This has made it more fun and something the little ones can help with.

  62. The fact that I had to hide the basket of clean unfolded clothes in my closet so I could sand the newly mudded/taped wall yesterday should be a good indication that I do not, in fact, "keep on top of the laundry." Plus the 4 more baskets of clean unfolded stuff in the laundry room and the one in the washer that had to be run again because it had been sitting there so long.

PS – I absolutely love your laundry art!

  63. HILARIOUS! I love your realness and humor. Laundry isn't a huge chore for us but ironing my husband's work shirts? That's another story. However, our laundry area is currently in our unfinished dungeon of a basement and the $500 would be a great start to the revamp I've been envisioning. Thanks so much for the giveaway!

  64. I just try to do one load a day. I am horrible at putting it away though. I always feel super accomplished if I wash, dry, and put away all in one day.

  65. I've been worse at it since we moved into our new house, because the laundry room is laid out so poorly (it's long and skinny, and the machines unfortunately have to be on a long wall, meaning that when the doors are open there's no space for a normal person to stand in front of them, much less big pregnant me!), but in our apartment I just did it every Tuesday. It's easier with just 2 people; I imagine it will become very difficult soon!

  66. I have a completely BARE laundry room that NEEDS updating and it is NEXT on our list 🙂 So excited to start on it!

  67. i hate laundry too. we don't have a laundry room to make over, though, just a big closet in the hall between bedrooms. i actually like it that way; i'm not sure what i would do with a whole room dedicated to laundry!

  68. Your laundry room sounds EXACTLY like mine. I want to curl up in a fetal position when I look in there, especially because my husband is quite fond of helping with the laundry by washing/drying it–and then throwing the clean clothes onto the floor into a heap. It's a total fabric skyrise. I love the butler cart idea and concrete countertops! I didn't know countertops could be redone that way!

  69. Alas, I don' have a laundry room; I have a laundry closet. It needs a counter. And a organization. And probably some different shelving. Basically it could all use some help. 🙂

  70. YOu people and all your Laundry ROOM woes, try having a laundry closet then we'll talk….Since all I have is said closet my kitchen will always and forever look like the drop off site @ a salvation army….

  71. I am just like you! I am great about the washing and drying steps, but folding it and putting it away…nope! There are times it never even actually gets folded, we just dig through the pile looking for things to wear and eventually the basket is magically empty! Even worse though, we live in a condo and do not have an actual laundry room, just a closet with the stacked washer and dryer, which makes it so much harder to hide my laundry laziness.

  72. As a single woman, I have the luxury of only having to do my own laundry. I also live in a very small apartment (under 550 sq. ft.) so with space being at a premium, I have the incentive of not letting laundry pile up in front of the washer/dryer closet…which is also in my kitchen!

  73. How I stay on top of laundry:
1.Take dirty clothes to the laundry room
    2.Hubby washes/dries/puts away.

…Hey, I work full time too and do most of the other chores. He is good at laundry and it keeps him out of trouble.

  74. Bleh. My laundry is usually piled up. I have to be highly motivated to keep on top of it. I am giving my laundry room a makeover now, it might help 🙂 xo, Tanya

  75. Of course i don't keep up with the laundry. and when i do wash/dry it i have to dry the same load over and over because i keep forgetting to take it out and fold it so i re-dry it so get the wrinkles out. which probably doesn't work anyway.

  76. i would like to say i'm on topofour laundry but I'mnot. onmy good days i take the laundry to my room, turn on the t.v. sort it into piles and get folding. mykids are nowold enough I can hand them their piles and they get tofold and put them away theirselves.

  77. Laundry is honestly my least favorite "mommy thing." The easiest way for me to stay on top of it is to start a load at night and switch it to the dryer just before I go to bed. In the morning I pull it out and fold it on my bed (or if things are a little wrinkly I run the dryer for a few minutes). My problem is that sometimes my laundry is still on my bed when I go to bed. Solution – throw it on the floor and hope to get to it the next day!

  78. I don't stay up on my laundry! Pretty much the only thing that motivates me to do laundry is when my husband says he doesn't have a clean white shirt for work the next day, then I have no choice!

  79. I am the queen of washing only what we need and letting the rest of the laundry pile up. And don't forget about the pile of clean clothes on the dryer. I am definitely not the best laundry-doer, but when I do manage to wash, dry, AND put away all the loads (it doesn't happen often) I feel like super woman! 😉

  80. I think laundry is never ending so no I do not keep on top of it. If I get it all washed and dried there will be more dirty before I can get it all put away.

  81. I really don't mind doing the laundry, but the folding and putting up stinks. My washer and dryer are on their last legs. Could use a laundry room makeover!

  82. I have 5 children and a LOT of laundry. I do at least one load a day and I fold it at night when the little ones can't unfold it.

  83. Nope! I never stay on top of my laundry….As a matter of a fact, the underwear availability being a reflection my love…totally a argument in our house.

  84. I am such a procrastinator when it comes to putting the laundry away. What's so sad about the whole situation is I live alone. No one to pass the chore on too, so I have to take the blame. My laundry room is the only room in my house that has never had a make-over in the 20 years I've lived there. If I changed the room, maybe I would get on the stick and put those clothes away.

  85. My laundry is in our basement so it is hard to stay on top of things. I was really great when I started a load every day before I left the house, so it was just a few things to fold when I got home. But I work full time now and have three kids so it tends to get backed up since I am rushing in the morning :/ need to get back to a load every day. But I do save myself by washing most everything in cold, don't separate and use oxi clean! It's the best

  86. When my kids were little my goal was to get all the laundry done before any more became dirty. Ya, right! Thanks gor the laugh 🙂

  87. With two boys, the laundry is never done. Plus I hate folding and putting it away, so there is always something still in the dryer.

  88. Laundry is always a struggle but if I get it done early in the week I find I am more likely to stay on top of it. 🙂 THanks for the chance to win!

  89. Never. I never have less than a small mountain of dirty laundry. Plus I don't have a laundry room, only a closet that sits right in front of the front door. I have to hide my dirty laundry, when I remember.

  90. Hahaha! I wish I was so ambitious as to keep up with the never ending pile of laundry. I have stopped beating myself up about it, it just is what it is! Always a load of clean clothes on top of the dryer and a dirty pile on the floor in front of the washer!

  91. Sometimes I do, but it's just me and my husband now – no kids, so I think that makes it easier! I don't mind washing the clothes, putting them in the dryer, hanging some of them up, or even folding so much. But it's the putting away that gets me!!

  92. Ok, the fact that she called that picture with the laundry butler a "small" laundry room makes me jealous. I grew up with the laundry room essentially being the hallway that connected the garage and the family room. It was exactly wide enough for a washer and dryer, nothing else. And right now I live in a condo with a communal laundry room down the hall. On the plus side, communal laundry means I have to stay on top of it!

  93. Usually I realize i need to do wash as I am heading into the weekend and need cleans clothes for the fun events. Thursday night usually becomes laundry night and I only fold the important things.

  94. Laundry is definitely not my favorite thing to do, but I do a pretty decent job of staying on top of it. Our house is small, with a VERY small laundry room. Therefore, I am forced to keep up with it, so it doesn't overrun the bedrooms and laundry room.
Thank you for the chance to win!

    stonemedic76(at)hotmail(dot)com

  95. I actually do not stay on top of laundry because we are temporarily living with my parents, and it's kind of hard to coordinate who gets to use the w/d, when.

  96. Our apartment doesn't have W/D hookups. I'd kill for an ugly laundry room if that meant I didn't have to pay $3 wash and $3 dry at the laundromat.

  97. I mean seriously….I have three kids. You want it clean? Put it on the floor in the laundry room, amongst the pile of others, according to color. It will eventually be cleaned. Wrinkled and back in another pile, but clean.
    whoop there it is.

  98. That would be a bit fat no. I'm a master at piling it all on my bed so I will "have" to fold it before bedtime. Then, shocker, I never get around to it and it all ends up on the floor. Repeat cycle about 8 times. 🙂

  99. There are only three of us right now (me, the hubs, and the wee one) so I just "let" the laundry build up for a little while and then have one big laundry overhaul of washing, drying, folding, and putting away. This normally takes at least 2 days for all the steps involved, but it REALLY helps when the hubby helps too. He's nice like that.

  100. I just can't stay on top of the laundry. We practically live out of laundry baskets. My laundry room is the scariest room in my house. Concrete floor, cinderblock walls, and exposed floor joist ceiling. Not to mention new spider webs pop up overnight.

  101. My laundry room is currently being renovated, but is stuck part way through, so I would loop be to win! Thanks for the chance!

  102. Oh man! I'm right there with you! I actually do have a very pretty and fairly functional laundry room complete with counter, sink, shelves, cabinets…and yet, I cannot friggin' manage to keep the clean clothes from piling up in ever-so-wrinkled mounds! Ugh! I'm glad I'm not alone!

  103. I'm about to move into a house that has a combination washer/dryer…in the scullery-style kitchen. Please let me know if you have any tips on where to hide the dirty clothes.

  104. Family of 6 here. I have laundry hampers to pre-sort our dirty laundry, one for whites, one for darks, one for pink/red, one for towels. Makes things go a lot faster when I have to throw some laundry in the washer!

  105. Haha, I really try to stop on top of my laundry room but that is a challenge when you have a 4 year old! I try to set aside 3 days a week to do laundry. Sometimes I do it, sometimes I don't lol.

  106. No, my laundry is my nemesis. I can't ever seem to stay on top of it and just when I am almost caught up, one of my kids decide to actually clean their room and thus another huge pile of laundry is born. Sad day. True story.

  107. My laundry room (in my 40 year old house) is literally a hallway leading to the back door. And it has a bathroom with one of those annoying pocket doors that break all the time. But mostly I want new tile. Badly.

  108. I have no cabinets, no counter space (literally none), gouged linoleum, and top loaders from about 1942. So…no, I don't stay on top of my laundry.

  109. OMG the laundry room art stuff is hilarious. I'd personally be happy to have all of those featured in my laundry room. Nothing like a good funny when you are stuck in the laundry room, literally and figuratively!!

  110. I am going to try that 'shelf' thing over the washer and dryer. I have been trying to get hubby to build me something like that, but if I can just lay it on there, that sounds like a winner.

  111. Laundry is the worst! My laundry room is not pretty, and I hang dry most things so there are clothes everywhere! Oh how I wanna win!!!!

  112. I am a single girl (living by myself) and I can't keep up with my laundry. I'm doomed if I ever decide to co-habitate/get married/procreate.

  113. Do I stay on top of my laundry? If by "stay on top" means I finally do laundry when I have no more clean underwear and can't put it off just one more day, then yes, yes I do 😉

  114. Jenny did such a fantastic job with her laundry room makeover! Even more impressive is how much money she didn't spend on it! Cheap and fab.

  115. I'm REALLY good at staying on top of my laundry… about once a month. Haha! The other times it piles up, then I have to do it for like 3 days straight and vow to keep on top of it *this time* but it wears off by about day 4.

  116. Funny that you ask, I should be folding laundry right now. I stay on top of getting the clothes clean, but when it comes to folding, I fall way behind. Every time it happens, I tell myself I will stay on top of it next time.

  117. I stay on top of it because I am one of the lucky wives that my husband helps with it! 🙂 It still takes me forever to get it folded and put away though! 🙂

  118. I stink at doing my laundry. I usually wait until I have no cute clean undies… My husband, on the other hand, does laundry like clockwork.. I don't know how he does it… I blame his OCD.

  119. When I moved into my new place I said to myself, "Well, since I don't need quarters to do laundry anymore, I'll obviously do it all the time." Oh, how wrong I was!

  120. I hate laundry. It's the folding and putting away for me, too. It takes For-ev-errrr. They say if you do one load a day from start to finish it is easier to stay on top of it…but who wants to do laundry EVERY DAY?!? not me!

  121. My laundry room is the basement…..think I'll print out this post and hang the pictures down there amongst the cobwebs, dirty work clothes, and all the single socks hanging from the exposed ductwork….then I can pretend to have a WAY cool laundry room!

  122. My laundry room is gigantic mess collector…all the odds and ends and dirty clothes end up here…as well as the obligatory pile of unfinished projects stashed there…..no advice here.

  123. If by "on top of" you mean, when I run out of underwear I wash the dirty clothes, then yes! I am so on top of it. Actually my husband usually ends up doing it when he runs out of work clothes since he has less than I do!

  124. My boyfriend and I live together in a small apartment. Our work clothes get washed every week but everything else….not so much. That all gets washed when it starts to escape our closet.

  125. I actually don't mind doing laundry! I went from a tiny laundry closet to a walk in room. Actual space and cupboaeds makes me a happy camper 😉

  126. I am married to a contractor and my washer and dryer are in my garage. Do you know how much this makes laundry suck? I am going to DIE in there one day, just trying to make my way from the washer to the dryer or back again. I wish I had a proper laundry room 🙁

  127. I stay on top of the washing and the folding, but putting away my clothes never happens. There are only two of us and a babe, so we don't have that much laundry. So I just buckle down and wash it all on friday and we fold as we clean on saturday.

  128. I also seem to never get to the put away part of laundry ! It takes so stinkin. Long!!!! And I second that they need a fold & put away cycle…hillarious!

  129. I'm the worst about folding laundry too! We dress out of hampers on our bedroom floor! Someday I'll get my act together…

  130. I do my laundry twice a week.I keep on top of it by folding, hanging as soon as stuff comes out of the dryer. once it is in it's bins folded or on hangers: i have the boys carry it all upstairs and put it away!

  131. My laundry room is 3rd on my list of rooms to make over, and those tips are definitely helpful! I also feel like those art suggestions speak to me on a very personal level, because the act of doing laundry is like my kryptonite 😉

  132. I go in spurts with laundry. Some weeks I nail it. This week, like others, it sits in the washer until it needs to be washed again because it now stinks and it's the night before my husband needs something that was in the dryer but didn't dry all the way (darn those bulky jeans) and is also now sour. Thus resulting in me staying up until 2 hours past my bedtime (when I already wake up a few times a night with a teething one year old) to get things rewashed and in the dryer.

So, yes, I get your cycle. It's vicious.

  133. Right now my laundry room is tiny, with huge pink stripes and a picture of Paris. Sounds kinda weird but I like it – now if only it made me like doing laundry!

  134. I am probably tied with you about how absolutely poorly I take care of the laundry situation at our house. That being said, it doesn't stop me from wanting to design a darn cute laundry room. My reasoning is that it will help me want to do laundry and maybe, just actually make me want to fold it too. Here's to hoping!

  135. There are 6 of us, so laundry is an ever-present foe. But in our new house, I'm so excited to have lots of counter space in there, so even if (like you) I never get to putting the laundry, at least its folded in piles in there and not on the kitchen table. I don't think we ate at the kitchen table for like a year because it was always covered with clean laundry piles. 🙁

  136. I would love to win some money toward our laundry room. Ours is a decent size and we already have a brand new washer and dryer. It just lacks storage. We walk through it from the garage. It would be nice to have something good to look at when I walk in! And I like doing laundry. I will even fold it. I just hate putting it away. 🙂

  137. The hubby and I take turns. Aaaand other than that, there is no system and we just go with our gut. Or when there is no clear underwear to be found.

  138. I try my hardest to stay on top of it bc it's amazing how two adults and one baby can create so many dirty clothes! If I do a load a day it's a little more tolerable! Now, putting it away is another story…that doesn't happen until we usually run out of clothing baskets! 😉

  139. Ha! My hubs does measure my love for him by the amount of clean underwear in his drawer! LOL
Thanks for sharing, I'm totally going to have to print that one.

  140. I TRY to stay on top of it by doing a load a day…putting it away is another story though…that doesn't happen until we usually run out of baskets! 🙂

  141. I stay on top of my laundry for about 2 weeks of the month. Then I stop caring, let it pile up (it's always washed! Just never folded… I hate folding the most!), realize that not caring isn't going to stop the endless pile and then stay on top of it. For two weeks. Then stop caring… You get the point…

  142. Loving the idea of making the laundry room fun! If it's a place I love to be, maybe–just maybe!–I'd spend a little more time in there folding those clean clothes.

  143. I am afraid we are made of the same laundry stuff, no problem washing and drying, just can't seems to get around to folding and putting away, there is always something better to do….!!!

  144. I know Iam the only person on the planet who feels like this, but I love laundry!? And folding clean, yummy smelling laundry is my fav! But my laundry room could use some sprucing up, so I really need to win this one!? 🙂

  145. My laundry room is a cluttered mess. There are still a few boxes full of mystery items from when we moved in nearly 2 years ago. 🙁 I would love to spend a weekend just clearing it out and making it pretty with an extra $500!

  146. I hate laundry with a passion, it is the worst! Just never ending! I wish I could put a picture in of my laundry "room" because its so pathetic, its just a passway between the garage and the family room. It needs help bad! haha

  147. hell no, I hate laundry. it's exactly like you said, this endless cycle that amounts to huge piles, only to be put away and repeat. plus, mine is in the basement and it involves going up and down a million times. chore!

  148. Since it's summer I have given the laundry duty to my teenage daughters. They have done a pretty good job keeping up. Now I just need to make the laundry room look pretty.

  149. I feel your pain! I am constantly trying to stay on top of the laundry, and it's not working!!!:) And it's hard to have a make-over laundry room when all I have is a laundry closet! I fold & sort in my hall.:( But I love the ideas…maybe someday…

  150. I do pretty well at keeping up with laundry. I make myself do at least 1 load a day. Sure, sometimes it's not the most convenient thing, but it sure beats all the stress of nothing clean, having lots of loads to do at once and trying to get something washed, dried and dealt with at the last minute because I didn't do it earlier when it was just 1 load.

If I don't want to do 1 load today, why do I think my future self is going to want to do umpty-five loads at once? 🙂 And, yes, I'm pretty sure umpty-five is a real number. 🙂

  151. I SOOO need to update my laundry room. One measly little shelf is all I have. I need cabinets galore, and a sink! (I already have the hookups for a sink, but no sink)

  152. i am pretty good at washing and drying our laundry but i am like you… I HATE putting everything away. I didn't like it when i just had my stuff now I have mine and my little girl's laundry (she is old enough to get it dirty and to scatter it from heck to breakfast, but not old enough to put it all away yet). I say that the day I have a closet that can actually fit my clothes in (we are renting and ever since I've been married We haven't had a good closet(our first apartment the closet in our room was about three feet wide for two people's clothes))well when i have room i say i will be better but i think my husband isn't holding his breath.

  153. Love this!! I'm pretty good about the doing the laundry part. It's just my husband and me, we don't have any kids yet so I wash everything on Saturday but…. it's the actual folding/hanging up/putting away part that I have a hard time with. Which is why I haven't been able to use my love-seat for the last 2 weeks. Good thing we also have a bigger couch otherwise we would not be able to watch Pawn Stars together.

  154. I needed to see this post….I've been trying to catch up with laundry for the past 3 weeks. No. Joke. Love the cute laundry room wall art! Maybe it will inspire me if I hang a couple of those up. Then again, maybe not. haha.

  155. I wish I even had a laundry room. Just have a laundry closet. So my clothes end up on the floor of my bedroom needing to be put away. But usually I just dig through that pile everyday for something to wear.

  156. I'm the same way!! I love doing laundry! Folding it.. That's another story. It all gets shoved on our guest bedroom bed! I need some motivation? Maybe a gift card to Home Depot will do it haha

  157. I JUST reorganized my laundry room, complete with wall vinyls that I swore would keep things organized… The clean laundry just piles up on the shelf 🙂

  158. Love this laundry room! I do wish I saw more things online for normal-sized laundry rooms…you know, the ones that pretty much just fit the washer and dryer and a little wall space above? It's nice to dream of having one this large, though!

  159. I usually stay on top of the laundry by doing several loads at a time even if I have to lay them flat after drying and put them away the next day.
    kellywcu8888ATgmailDOTcom

  160. With a toddler and a new baby, I am doing laundry CONSTANTLY, but never getting it all done…mostly it's the folding that haunts me. Oh, the folding!

  161. My seven-year-old loves to help me sort. He sets up three "zones" for darks, lights, and delicates, and I try to throw the clothes in the right zone before he can catch them. Somehow this makes us excited about doing laundry.

  162. With 3 boys there's a lot of laundry! That's why I started them doing that chore 🙂 Yes, it takes a time investment but the payoff is HUGE!

  163. As non-functional as my last laundry room was, I think I would dearly love to have it back. We are in a tiny bungalow and both the washer and dryer are in the kitchen! lol

  164. Jenny's laundry room makes me drool. And I too suffer from the ability to cycle the wash without ever EVER putting it away. I just keep buy more underwear and more laundry baskets…
    xx Charlotte @ Ciburbanity

  165. We try to stay on top of our laundry, but it is difficult sometimes. There are only 2 of us, but we do try to do our laundry at least once a week. We just bought our first washer and dryer (new to us at least) so we are hoping to be better at it. 🙂

  166. When I actually move into the house we just bought and have a laundry room, I will totally be on top of it (hopefully). Right now I let it go until we go visit my mother in law every few weeks, hehe.

  167. I have clean laundry strewn ALL OVER my house, because I, too, get stuck on the fold/put away step! I try to explain to judgy visitors that it's CLEAN laundry (as if that makes it any better). But now that my son is potty training, it's a constant rotation of clean laundry everywhere replaced with pee-pee sheets and underwear everywhere. *sigh* Some day I'll get this Domestic Godess thing down.

  168. "There is no counter, small shallow cabinets, bad linoleum, beige paint, and not a lot of room." Oh my gosh, we have the same laundry room! Where is the laundry butler from? Love that!

  169. Seriously….my number uno pet peeve for chores is laundry. I hate it with every fiber of my being. With three little boys (4,3 and 1), I am literally swimming in dirty clothes all day. No bueno.

  170. I do keep up with my laundry (usually) but mostly it's because I'm one person!! However, I do have phases where I won't do laundry for weeks on end, the basket is overflowing and it takes 2 full days to get it done. And no one to blame but myself!!

  171. I do a little laundry every two days. It is easy to keep things neat, tidy and ironed. It is also easiest to keep a broom and dust pan in there for that pesky run away lint. I have a hanging bar so right from the dryer to the hanger makes it a snap. I would love to instal cupboards where the shelf is above the washer, top loading and dryer. That would hide the beautiful laundry detergent and bleach. I would also replace the vinyl flooring and paint the room a pretty cupboard. A drop down ironing board would be super.

  172. I definitely do not stay on top of the laundry, and we don't even have kids yet. A construction working husband goes through a lot of clothes, and I hate running my nice clothes through after his. My whites have come out with a good tint of "Southern Utah Red Dirt" on them more than once. Grrr!

  173. I don't know that I am ever on top of it unless I am standing on it haha! I just do a load or two a day and call it done no matter how much is left! 🙂

  174. Psh. You're not alone. I don't even have kids yet and I can barely stay on top of the laundry for the two of us. (It doesn't help that my laundry room is in my garage….in Arizona. Blech.

  175. First… Oh. My. Garsh. The concrete overlay has just changed my perspective of the world!!! 🙂

Second… I'd say that I don't let Laundry rule my life, but I try to have a healthy respect for it. (Yeah, it's like its own character in my life story. Laundry; that high school friend you keep in your life because they know all of your dirty secrets.) With a wonderful yet filthy baby boy + cloth diapers + a hubby in the news (read: he has to look good or else tens of thousands of people will judge him…and me…for letting him leave the house looking like a schlep), it's kind of a must.

Plus, I just bought a new washer and dryer, so going from beating clothes on a rock a la the Flintstones to waiting half the time for the stuff to dry feels like heaven. 🙂 That helps, too.

  176. I hate folding/putting away…so…I don't stay on top of it like I could/should. When the hampers are empty it's because my husband jumped in and did some too, LOL

  177. Mandi, That art is amazing and so funny!!! I would buy a print or downloadable version of each of those if you offered em up.

I loved Jenny's laundry room makeover, it inspired me to start planning out our own laundry room overhaul!

  178. one load a day for me…I make sure to go the whole 9 yards (soaking stains, washing, pre-dry, dry, iron, fold, putaway) because there is a KILLER piece of chocolate waiting for me each day that I do! Love to reward myself with a treat for doing a task that I don't truly enjoy. Vacuuming, though, I could do all day!

  179. I do stay on top of it mostly, but I don't work outside of our house.

    {in the contest I am Margot Core on the Rafflecopter}

  180. My 3 and 5 year old put away their own clothes. I do a day of laundry most weeks but some weeks it's a load a day. Then put it away. It sucks but somebody has to do it

  181. When I had 4 kids in school and working it was impossible to keep on top of it. Now, no little guys to do laundry for and a husband that does all the laundry, It is always done. He washed, dries, folds and puts it all away. He does it as soon as there is enough for a load. He is fantastic!

  182. I try to, but it depends on what's going on. I have a very small laundry room, so I can't let the clothes pile up!

  183. The only way I ever stay on top of laundry is to do each load out of the dryer! Since this never happens, I usually have mounds of laundry to do…. On Saturday night…. Like right now.

  184. I cannot stay on top of laundry. In fact the hubs knows not to rely on me and has taken to doing his himself! (A big change considering he had never done laundry in his life. My MIL has 6 kids and does 1-3 loads of laundry a day — she seems to love it!)

I do love the idea of creating a folding station!

  185. Ugh, I hate my laundry room too! It's way too small, doubles as a mud room and is barely deep enough to have anything in there other than the machines!

  186. How do I stay on top of the laundry?? Well, I really DON'T but I tell people I do one load a day to stay sane. And that's mostly true. I wash it, I dry it, sometimes it will actually come out of the dryer. But it will often stay either in the laundry basket on the floor (and maybe heaping ONTO the floor) or in piles in the living room. Or draped over chairs in every bedroom. It's probably my husband's biggest complaint about me….but I'm hoping one day he'll learn to accept that housework is not my specialty.

  187. How in the name of all that is unholy does one ever stay on top of laundry? I mean, someone is ALWAYS wearing something, right? At least that's the hope because, thank the heavens above, I don't live in a nudist colony! But I've always thought that disposable clothing would be a fantastic idea! I can take the garbage out, just don't ask me to do the laundry in it's entirety every. single. week.

  188. I do wish I was on top of our laundry, but I've never been good at it. In college, my friends and I would sometimes go shopping instead of having to actually do laundry – so bad haha.

  189. Moved from a large home with a huge laundry room that I designed to a smaller home with a teensy one! I miss my other house 🙁 !! Would love to win the generous gift!!! Thanks for the opportunity!

    Georgia

  190. Hmmmm, my first comment didn't post! Love a big laundry room but no longer have one! Thanks for the opportunity
to win the generous giveaway……..I could really use it!!

    Georgia

  191. I am with Mandi…I am never on top of laundry. As I type, there are piles on my family room floor, and I am lounging in a chair. Ha!

  192. I am with Mandi! I am never on top of laundry. As I type, I have piles on my family room floor that have been there for 4 days now. Yet I sit here on VR. 🙂

  193. The theory is that you should process 1 load of laundry completely every day, and that way you don't have a massive pileup. In reality, this is the norm: Laundry gets done. It sits in the basket. Cats sleep on it. It gets redone. Things are piled on top so that cats cannot sleep in it. The dog jumps up to grab something from the top of the pile. The pile falls. Cats sleep on it. Thank god the hamster is confined.

  194. My laundry always piles up, but at least that forces me to wear more than just my favorite few things over and over.

  195. I don't stay on top of the putting away all that well, but I DID recently switch to a smaller laundry basket, so when it's full, I tend to do laundry more often. I'm hoping it translates to folding and putting away sometime in the near future…

  196. I don't stay on top of the putting away all that well, but I DID recently switch to a smaller laundry basket, so when it's full, I tend to do laundry more often. I'm hoping it translates to folding and putting away sometime in the near future…

  197. No I don't stay on top of my laundry! I only have 1 child left at home, and she's 12 so I have told her if she doesn't keep her room picked up & stop throwing things on the floor, she will earn the right to do her OWN laundry. We'll see what happens with that. I have a scary laundry room, like some of the other commenters said. Ours is in an unfinished basement of a home that was built in 1927. Please pick me, I think one of those laundry hamper things looks like a great idea – a place to hang things and a place to put the other stuff into and move it around.

  198. I try to, but it's so easy to get behind. I don't mind washing it, it's the folding that I hate. I would love to redo our laundry room, we desperately need cabinets for storage.

  199. I don't mind the washing part, it's the hanging the delicates, folding and then putting they way that bothers me. So I guess that's most of it!

  200. I am moving into a house where the laundry is in the creepy basement. I HATE that! Am going to figure out a way to move it upstairs. There is just me but I seem to do a lot of laundry. I think it is because I garden and do DIY and get sweaty and icky a lot.

  201. Laundry is my least favorite thing to do next to cleaning the bathrooms. Luckily my now 9 year old has recently started doing his own laundry as a chore. That helps me out a bit, I usually will fold their clothes once out of the dryer but they are responsible for putting it away. We keep everything sorted pretty well so it is easy to put away once clean. Bonus: My hubby does his own laundry!

  202. LOL!! I'm single and – confession time, hope Mom isn't reading – have 57 pair of underwear because it's easier to buy more than to do laundry!

  203. I'm terrible about laundry. My secret is buying enough clothes so that I only have to do it every 2-3 weeks…or longer-whoops!

  204. I get my kids to help fold their stuff anyway…and then the rest is just a lot of work to fold and put away!…at least we can all relate on this, huh?! 😉

  205. I do NOT stay on top of it. It is my most hated thing. I get them clean and then they sit in piles going nowhere for about a week afterward. Is that underwear pic a prinatble, b/c I seriously want to put it up in our laundry room!!

  206. Thanks for all the tips. My laundry room falls into the category hasn't been updated in decades so I will plan to update according to your great tips. I do stay on top of the laundry and the only time years ago when I didn't was because I didn't have a place for all the clothes. Cleaning out helped tremendously with the laundry being a dreaded task.

  207. OMG, You totally crack me up! I absolutely love your blog and I need that HD gift card so that I can continue my guestroom makeover that you inspired me to start; so please pick me, pick me!! 😉

  208. Some people like laundry. I'm not one of them. The worst is folding and putting away. Blech.
    shannoncarman at yahoo dot com

  209. baaaaahahahahaha bahahahaha bahahahahhahahahaha

That is my response to, "do you stay on top of your laundry?" considering i said to my husband, "we have to do laundry first thing in the morning before i shower because i'm out of underwear." *classy*

  210. This is hilarious and amazing! And I love your honesty. My son has been wanting to sleep in just his underwear lately, and in my mind I've been thinking "no pajamas?!?! less laundry!!!"

  211. I mostly keep up with the laundry. Each week I figure out which day I'll be at home all day and that's when it gets done. I hate putting it away, too! I load clothes into baskets for my sweet husband and grandson and put them in the bedrooms. They unload and return the basket to the laundry room…

    CINDY B on rafflecopter

  212. On more than one occasion I have had to rewash a clean basket of clothes because it took me too long to put the clothes away and they became wrinkled. And I certainly wouldn't want to iron them!

  213. I have a big laundry room – but it's SOOOOooo dated (think 1950's real-wood paneling and some shower-board type stuff with vines on it. ICK). Would love to win and possibly add a 1/2 bath to the space! By the way, I stay on top of laundry, for the most part, but not ironing. My mother, however, loves to iron, so I pretend I save the ironing for her… 🙂

  214. I laughed when I saw the slab on top of the washer/dryer. My units are on one platform. When the washer spins, the dryer does the shimmy! That slab would be flying! Truly my laundry room needs help!

  215. I wish I could stay on top of the laundry! It's in our first floor bathroom so everyone can literally see our dirty laundry!

  216. I have a good system for washing and folding it's the putting away that gets me all the time. My family has been conditioned to look there for items before going to their closets!

  217. My husband travels, so I only do his laundry one day a week–the rest of the week, we have 2 of us at home. Luckily, neither of us creates extra laundry each day 😉

  218. We are amazing at washing the laundry, but terrible at remembering to fold it and put it away.

    jessicarwarfield at gmail dot com

  219. I try to do at least one load a day completely. (wash, dry, fold, put away) There are six of us, so there's always plenty of laundry, but 1 or 2 loads a day really helps and if I can get them completely done, I'm not faced with baskets full of clean clothes that no one what's to wear because they're too wrinkled.

  220. We moved into our first house in March and our laundry room is tiny!! It's the only thing that drives me crazy in our otherwise amazing home. I love the idea of taking the cabinet doors off and putting a pop of color in the back! Thanks 🙂

  221. Our "laundry room" is in an unfinished basement. I don't like going down there because I'm afraid of centipedes. The sink is an interesting color due to all the paint brushes that have been washed in there over the years, and it drips every time water runs through the drain. I don't even want a folding station because I try to spend AS LITTLE TIME DOWN THERE AS POSSIBLE. So um, pretty please, I sure would like that makeover! 😉

  222. I do not, but it's getting better. I have given the responsibility of personal laundering over to my two oldest children, so that has cut down my load considerably!

  223. It's very hard to stay on top of laundry in my home, and there's only two of us! Right now our laundry room is in our basement/garage. The up-side is that the trips make for good exercise. 🙂

  224. We hang all of our shirts (even sweaters and undershirts) and fold everything else right out of the dryer which cuts down on folding/ironing time considerably. I usually try to do a load or 2 a day and when I keep up that pace it stays under control, but once I skip a day or two it piles up fast! I hang shirts that need to be ironed and leave them in the laundry room, reserving ironing for 1 day in a week when I just watch a couple of movie on Netflix and go to town.

  225. You have your hands FULL! I feel for you. I was there a couple of years ago. And do you know how I stay on top of my laundry? My grown daughter does it! She's my laundry fairy! 🙂

  226. I read a tip from a blogger years ago which revolutionized laundry for me. (We have five kids!)

Instead of everyone throwing their laundry in the same place and creating Mount Washmore, everyone keeps their hamper in their room and I wash clothes for one person at a time. No sorting! No asking "Who's sock is this? Who's shirt is this?, Who's pillowcase is this?" Plus, they can fold/hang their own clothes. Not that they always do, but they could.

  227. I don't stay on top of my laundry either! I painted a sign above my laundry room door that says, "Life is too short to fold fitted sheets!"

  228. oh my god… folding. It ALWAYS piles up for us even though there's only two people in the house. BUT a couple tips: plop all the clean/warm/dryer-tumbly laundry onto the bed so before bed you have to put it SOMEWHERE (away, preferably). This only works 60% of the time because I'm incredibly lazy and will fall asleep on a pile of warm laundry. Much like a cat. Also, folding just a couple things every day and putting them away is toats easier than folding a bajillion things in one go. Does that give anyone else back cramps? Agh.

  229. I'm the luckiest woman in the world – my husband is super picky about his clothes and won't let anyone else do his laundry!! YESSSSS!!!!

  230. Laundry and done are never ever used in the same sentence. Ever! I swear there are monsters that come into my home at night and bring loads of laundry with them.

  231. No way do I keep up with laundry. It takes the entire laundry room floor disappearing for me to realize it is time to get it done! Haha! Then of course, by the time I think it's finished it has piled back up! Would LOVE to be able to organize the space! Thanks for the giveaway!

  232. I do at least 3, sometimes 4, loads a day! There are only 4 of us living here! How the heck do we end up with so much dirty laundry?!!! Oh wait, that's right, I have a teenage daughter. :-/

  233. I have completely transformed being controlled by my families laundry!! And it's pretty easy…. I follow the Flylady for keeping my house in top shape all the time and one of her daily chores is to do just one laundry load a day. That means wash dry and fold. It is something that I never thought I could do but it has changed my life!! ;-D THanks for this fabulous oppty!

  234. I do the ol' rewash and redry thing several times a week, too. I don't have a laundry room per se, it's a pass through area between the never used back door and the basement. There's lots of room for improvement there….I would love to have a stacking washer & dryer and a utility sink with places for sorting & folding laundry.

  235. Uh, laundry. I always seem to have more to wash. The folding and having a place to put it is my biggest issue. I hope I win because I have so many projects that need things from Home Depot. 🙂

  236. I do stay on top of the laundry as best as I can. I have 3 boys(2 teenagers) and they create a lot of laundry. I try to do a load or 2 every other day. I wash and dry, but they have to put it all away. That is where the frustration lies. The family room is the folding station since it is right off the garage where my "laundry room" is.

  237. I am pretty much in your same boat. But I don't have a laundry room. My washer and dryer is in my sunroom, and all my clean laundry is on my dining room table!

  238. Just a basement area – with lots of shelves for laundry baskets, plastic drawers for some clothes, and bars hanging from the ceiling to hang clothes. We don't fold. Everyone learned to laundry when they were little, except for hubby who started when I turned his white t-shirts pink. Ooops. I am envious of those clean white well organized spaces. I would like to re-design the space under my stairs. And we need to clean out "stuff" that gets put in the basement – for some other day. Like skinny clothes, or outdated outfits that could be great for Halloween…yikes don't get me started!

  239. Laundry is no big deal to me…we are on top of it! Kids do their own once a week. Towels and rags, once a week and my stuff…as needed. Homeschooling kids helps…because they can see the loads through from start to finish in one afternoon. Dishes, on the other hand…never on top of! 🙂

  240. Not at all! I always find myself saying things like, "what do you mean you don't have any clean socks? I just did laundry…um…well…I guess it's been awhile."

  241. I hate doing laundry because unless your naked the project is never 100% complete. There's always atleast one more outfit that's dirty. UGH! Wish a magical fairy came and washed, folded, and put it all away

  242. I try to stay on top of my laundry by assigning different things to different days. I wash diapers and towels on Saturdays, kids clothes on Mondays, my clothes on Tuesdays, etc. This seems to help….when I remember to do it 😉

  243. I don't even have a laundry room, I have a laundry closet! I hate it. It needs me to win, BAD. I don't stay on top of the laundry. I feel like all I wash is my son's football clothes every day, and everyone else is out of luck.

  244. I sort of halfway redid my "laundry room" (tiny passage from the kitchen to the garage) last year, and it looks a lot better than it did, but my problem is all the random crap that accumulates on the top of the washer and dryer! Ugh!

  245. It is not so much the washing and the drying of the laundry I don't like, it is the folding and the putting away. When all he laundry is clean at the same time, I run out of room to put it. I have just bagged up 4 or 5 bags of clothes and still have to much!!!! My husband has over 20 black t-shirts!!!

  246. GORGEOUS!! SO jealous! 🙂 How do I stay incredibly on top of the laundry? Easy: 1) No kids…yet. 2) Hubs does ALL of it while listening to podcasts and watching movies -he actually LOVES it. I realize I am blessed.

  247. It's easy to stay on top of my laundry NOW….I'm an empty nester and there is only 2 of us now. Staying on top of the laundry when 3 kids were at home…not as easy! Thanks for this great give away! Christine M.

  248. I do manage to stay on top of laundry because I have to go to the laundromat – I go once a week. But, ironing? That's a different story – I never seem to be on top of that!

  249. "Is not a direct reflection of the love I have for you." Yep, so me… LOVE IT! (Although, a good majority of the time, I'm just almost there… the underwear are actually clean, they're just not dry yet haha.)

  250. It's just me and the hubs, but he pretty much wears three or four different outfits a day between sleeping, working out, work and everything else that he does! If I don't have laundry to do I start to get worried 🙂

  251. It is impossible for me to stay on top of our laundry because my dryer is apiece and it half a day to dry one load! I really, really could us this to buy a new one!

  252. My kids are finally old enough to help with the laundry so thiers gets done pretty regularly. Mine on the other hand… well maybe I better start stashing my stuff in their basket…

  253. Nope, I'm never on top of the laundry! If it's all washed, then nothing is put away. If things have been put away, then I'm sure there's a full hamper lurking in the boys' bathroom, fermenting their socks. I'd love to be able to organize and prettyfy our laundry room!

  254. Nope, I'm never caught up with laundry. Plus it doesn't help the fact that there's too many clothes for our available storage and my hubby refuses to donate stuff. Our bedroom usually looks like a laundry room from all of the clothes all over the place.

  255. Most confusing contest ever! Leave a comment on your blog post? Or on the original one? Click the link? How do I enter three times? Argh!

  256. I'm right there with you sister, I don't mind washing or drying…it's folding and putting away that sucks the most!!! I'm terrible at it!

  257. I keep up on sorting. All dirty clothes go into a basket in each room's closet. they are then sorted into the laundry room cabinets when they get too full. I keep up on washing but folding gets to me. I have a sweet hubby that often will help me put it away if I happen to not "get to it…." 🙂

  258. I stay on top of it most of the time. Because well, my husband is actually good at doing laundry. I think he does it more than I do. There, I said it.

  259. I'm pretty good with keeping up with my family's laundry but it would be a whole lot easier if my laundry "closet" was a little prettier 🙂

  260. I'm the WORST about doing laundry. I always leave everything in the dryer and then fluff up my clothes as I need to wear them. I'm working on it – sharing a washer/dryer set with 3 other people kind of forces me to face my bad habits.

  261. Not usually, But I try to keep it down to two baskets of dirty nothing flowing over on the floor. But that means I do a couple loads every 2 to 3 days. (My problem is really putting it away once it is clean LOL!)

  262. I have to do a load a day starting on Monday. No slacking because once it starts piling up, I give up and start buying new clothes instead of washing. It's sick.

  263. I have to do a load a day starting on Monday. No slacking because once it starts piling up, I give up and start buying new clothes instead of washing. It's sick.

  264. I used to not mind doing laundry, and it was kept up. Now, it has gotten away from me, too many things had to be hung outside to dry properly — it is the mad dash to get caught up 🙁 I had baskets of folded laundry too heavy to carry. I find it threatening — rain, rain, go away, so laundry can be caught up some day 🙂 @ [email protected] to hopefully win 🙂

  265. I don't know how yet, but we just moved in to our new to us house and I am going to try and figure it out! I liked the above tips, thanks!

  266. How do I stay on top of laundry? Well I have 3 little boys and one messy husband so the answer to that question is I never stop doing laundry! It's like that Pinky and the Brain cartoon from years ago. "What are we going to do tomorrow night Brain?" "Same thing we do every night…try and take care of the laundry!" It's an endless cycle and it stresses me out! But I have plans, my friend, to turn these little monsters into my own laundry doing army!!! Ha ha ha!!(in my evil villain laugh)

  267. I stay on top of my laundry (for the most part) because my stacked washer and dryer is in my kitchen, so if I leave my clothes in there, I can't cook. If I can't cook, I can't eat. And I love to eat.

  268. I love this!! I agree…don't mind washing and drying the clothes its the putting them away. My family is used to not having any clean underwear and me saying "ya you do…they are in the basket in the laundry room" and don't worry they've been sitting there for days!

  269. it takes me 4 days to complete the laundry cycle… day 1: wash n dry, day 2: dump clothes on couch, day 3: fold, day 4: put away finally… by then the hubby & kids have taken clean clothes from the piles and dirtied them already…

  270. So I have three babies three and under which means never ending laundry. As much as I prefer to have one laundry day, the only way I can stay relatively on top of it is washing a load of kid's clothes every other to every day and I choose one day to wash my and my hubby's clothes. It's just a never ending beast no matter what way you look at it 🙂

  271. As we speak, I am remembering that I put a load of laundry in 50 minutes ago….was supposed to get the load 20 minutes ago, and now I'm hoping no one is rifling through my unmentionables. –sigh– Apartment living…

  272. I have Ikea baskets to hold separated laundry. My kids sort their laundry and I wash then fold while I watch tv. We have to walk thru the laundry room to get to the tv room so it's motivating to keep it clean. Good luck!

  273. I do NOT stay on top of my laundry. I have 3 boys who get everything dirty and play football! The only reason my friends think I stay on top of my laundry is because I have a really large master bedroom and all the laundry gets sorted into piles there and that's where it usually stays… With the door closed so no one can see the piles. At least it's sorted, I guess… 😉

  274. I'm pretty good about the laundry. Laundry is done twice a week and clothes must be put away upon finishing (no ifs, ands, or buts about it). It helps to have really organized closets and dressers, which makes putting away clothes much faster. I also don't remove the basket from the laundry room. Clothes go to the bedrooms by hand so they HAVE to get put away since there's no basket for them to sit in.

Clothes go to the bedrooms by hand so they HAVE to get put away since there's no basket for them to sit in.

  276. Laundry is fine; foldry sucks! I make myself fold it as I take it out of the dryer. So I'm not allowed to change the laundry until the previous load is folded. If I don't have another load to do, sometimes the clean clothes stay in the dryer for a couple days!

  277. I long for an actual laundry room but a few of these ideas will help in my small closet.. THANKS! Love the bright colors.

  278. Huh. I've never found a way to stay on top of the folding and putting away. When those machines come out, I'll be first in line!

  279. The laundry room is the next thing to tackle and I can't wait. Inherited appliances that are possibly older than I am aren't exactly ideal. 🙂

  280. I don't ever stay on top of my laundry. I let it pile up until I can't ignore the chaos that is tumbling out of the laundry room. Then I spent an entire day working on completing the laundry and feeling hard done by. A vicious cycle, it is….

  281. Ohmygoodness my husband was just getting on my today asking how much money I waste because I rewash loads of laundry over and over! Seriously-washing clothes for five people is no joke, it's a part time job!! Thanks for the great giveaway and keeping it real!!

  282. I do stay on top of my laundry… and here's how. Each person in the house has a laundry basket that when full is the size of a regular load of laundry (I use trash cans). Every night I survey the baskets/cans and the one that's most full gets tossed in the wash. The next morning it gets tossed in the dryer. Around mid-morning when I'm wanting a snack (I work from home) and wander into the kitchen/laundry area, I pull it out of the dryer, dump it back in the basket, and walk it to the room it belongs. If I'm super motivated I start putting it away. If not super motivated I wait until the afternoon snack bug hits me and I put it away then. Same thing every day. The routine of it means I never fall behind. It also helps that I keep the loads to one person. Means it's easier to put away if I'm only going to one room vs. multiple rooms. And for the record I have no laundry room. The stackable washer/dryer are in a closet with no shelves, doors, walls, or anything.

  283. With 2 adults and 2 kids, its hard to stay on laundry. Baby clothes are PAIN to fold!! We do a load a night (or try to). Does this giveaway come a maid to help? lol

  284. My laundry room is the pits. I never fold clothes in there because it is so bad. I need a wall to separate laundry from storage (junk).

  285. My laundry room is the pits. I never fold clothes in there because it is so bad. I need a wall to separate laundry from storage (junk).

  286. I stay on top of laundry by doing it all one day. I start the second I wake up, sort it all out, and start the first load. Then I continue to switch loads throughout the day as often as I remember. Because I do it on the same day it is easy for me to remember I am doing laundry. However you could always set a timer to remind you that it's time to switch a load. Sometimes a load or two stacks up on my bed before I have time to fold, but I find it easier to fold as I go. At the end of the loads I put it all away. I HAVE to put it away because it's on the master bed.

  287. i suffer from the same, wash/dry/leave in hamper for a week mentality that you do. we are actually in the process of redoing our laundry room a little bit. how fun and awesome it would be to win.

  288. To be honest…I'm the exact same way! Fortunately, I married someone who does the laundry because I'd just pull a movie star move and wear an outfit till it's dirty and then go buy another one, which of course we wouldn't be able to afford!

    Jami @ What the Graham?!

  289. No way! You should see the piles of clean laundry piled on top of my washer and dryer and the piles of dirty laundry strewn all over my bedroom floor.

  290. Jenny is seriously beyond creative! I would LOVE to have a laundry room this amazing in my home – maybe I would have more motivation to stay on top of it 🙂 Thanks for sharing!

  291. I know I am crazy but I actually like doing the laundry! At least I like it better than say the dishes! Maybe it's because I have redecorated my laundry room 3 times and we are going for. Number 4 in a few weeks. Makes a dirty job more fun!

  292. I can crank out the washing and drying in a day normally, but I cannot make myself fold and put away. Normally if I let the pile of clean clothes pile high enough in front of the TV then the hubs will fold and put 'em away.

  293. I can crank out the washing and drying in a day normally, but I cannot make myself fold and put away. Normally if I let the pile of clean clothes pile high enough in front of the TV then the hubs will fold and put 'em away.

  294. My laundry gets done in spurts! With 4 boys I could never be on top of laundry…I usually do it when it's starting to creep out of the laundry room. 😉

  295. I am a laundry-a-holic, yes i am, I even have a neighbor who is horrified that I iron my clothing and like to do so, there I said it !!! lol

  296. If I can do 1-2 loads a day it really helps. But I get lazy and then it piles up and then I spend too much time trying to catch up again. I always get bottlenecked at the folding/putting away part!!!

  297. Gorgeous room! I love the orange and grey, and the brass pulls. Laundry…I'm not really on top of it. I wash sheets on Mondays, religiously, but as for clothing, I throw in a load whenever I feel like it or when the kids have no clean undies left. Some weeks I'm more on top of it than others. My laundry room is a cave in the basement. A large cave, but still a cave.

  298. We tend to do laundry only every other week. And then it's just one night of power laundry, but it makes me feel less stressed. 🙂

  299. I do like two loads everyday just to stay on top of it. With four kids and one on the way, I have to do it. I also try to put it away immediately or it ends up in a basket on my bedroom floor for days. Good luck! Laundry is the worst job ever!

  300. I am pretty good at staying on top of washing and drying laundry – it's the putting things away that gets me everytime! A drying rack and folding station would sure help spruce up my laundry room and make it more enticing for me to put laundry away!

  301. Your laundry room sounds like mine! It barely qualifies as a room it is so small but at least it has a door that can be shut. 😀

  302. It's only me and my husband, but I don't. There's no excuse, but I just don't.

I actually think I'm going to print out the "lack of underwear" saying and frame it for my husband. He is always looking for clean underwear…and they are nowhere to be found.

  303. nope I am always behind. I'm trying ot have a basket in each bedroom or bathroom and rotate one or two loads a day. That way they will actually be washed, folded and put away. I'm still getting use to it but it has helped a little.

  304. I bought a large-capacity washer and dryer to help me stay on top of the laundry, but instead I used it as justification to fall even further behind because hey, at least I can catch up faster!

  305. Laundry is my FAVORITE chore. Call me weird but what other job can you start, go take a nap and still be getting your chores done? Also, folding clothes fresh from the dryer is warm and comforting. So fold immediately, put them in a basket and next trip up the stairs, haul them to the appropriate room. Getting the basket emptied and clothes put away is room owners problem…

  306. There are only two of us, so laundry actually doesn't pile up so badly. I do two to three loads every weekend – one whites, one darks, one towels or sheets (if the towels didn't fit in the darks load). Occasionally we'll do one midweek if needed.

  307. I've found the state of my life is directly proportionate to the state of my laundry room.

If my laundry room is in chaos, my life follows suit.

So, basically my life is an organized mess most of the time.

  308. How do I keep up with laundry — OCD husband who gets up every morning and throws a load in (whether he needs to or not). Sorting is still a mystery to him but he does take my microfiber unmentionables and spandex gym clothes out of the mix before they go in the dryer. Jo @ Let's Face the Music

  309. I love this blog post and love the giveaway! I actually do stay on top of my laundry, but it's only my husband, me and my 18 month old girl, so we don't have too many clothes to wash. I guess I just do it when our basket gets full. I have a basket in our closet with 2 sections. I put whites in one side, coloreds in the other and when they get full I put in a load. Whites usually once a week, coloreds probably 2-3 times a week. I try to wash, dry, fold, and put away all in one day (usually only 1-2 loads at a time). Sometimes the clean folded clothes sit there for a couple days until I need the basket for another load, then I'm forced to empty it. 🙂 I would love to make my laundry room look and feel better. Thanks for all your posts!

  310. I hate laundry! Mine is in a horrible unfinished corner of the basement. My secret – pass it off to my boyfriend! There's no way i'm spending that much time in there 🙂

  311. My husband and I do laundry every Saturday. We run a load of towels, the bedding, lights, darks, and jeans. We fold and put things away as soon as they're done in the dryer. The things that can't go in the dryer hang on the shower bar since we only have a laundry closet and no space for a hang dry bar. We put those hang dry clothes away on Sunday morning.

  312. My laundry room is so small, would love to extend it some into my mud room and make it look as pretty at the photos in this post.

  313. The pop of orange and the tile floors really bring interest to an otherwise boring (and depressing) place to be. Can I get an amen for hating laundry duty?!

  314. My tips for keeping up with the laundry:
    1. Come to grips with the fact that the laundry is NEVER "done" you are just in one stage or another of the cycle!
    2. Kids do their own laundry as soon as they are able!
    3. NEVER fold underwear or P.J.'s 🙂

  315. I can definitely use these DIY tips to spruce my laundry room up. It's in a unfinished basement with concrete floors and framed in walls with no drywall! It's been like that for 6 years!! It's one of those rooms that is overlooked because it's not a main living space. But lord knows this Lil momma spends a lot of time in there!

  316. I totally don't mind doing laundry at all… Doesn't really take that long. The putting away is definitely the issue. Especially when the closet needs to be cleaned out big-time, so anything that gets hung in there is just gonna wrinkle asap

  317. Oh, sure! I keep up with the laundry.. for a few days at least. I'll think I'm on top of it until I hear a "Mommmmmm, I need underwearrrrr!" which is usually during a time when I have NO time to do laundry. hah!

  318. I could so use this gift card, but to re-floor my upstairs. The laundry room is low priority when you have half the carpet in your house torn out!

  319. I don't keep up with my laundry. I go in spurts wavering between "the kids need to do their own laundry" and "You're really going to sit on the toilet for an hour while I wash your underwear?" It's great.

  320. Love you Mands! I actually have a laundry room makeover that I'm almost finished with and planning to blog about, but having time to get the room done AND the laundry done has evaded me so far…so it is waiting. I usually have a good year or so of turn around time on my room makeovers, so maybe before Christmas?

  321. I stopped sorting colors years ago… Now if only that actually helped stay on top of laundry I'd be all set! Lol

  322. Love your suggested artwork for the Laundry Room – My laundry room could use an update as well as it is builder's boring right now. And for some reason, my kids can do their own laundry (for which I am grateful) but can never actually remove it from the room so there is always a basket of clothes. I never know for sure if they are clean or dirty!

  323. Confession…my hubs does the laundry!!!! I know, I am very lucky! He washes and the rest of the fam folds their own. I have been thinking of re designing the laundry room as a man-cave laundry place??? now, THAT is sexy!! hahaha!

  324. Monday is laundry day in our house. But the last load always ends up staying in the dryer for days and gets tumbled at least 3 times before I actually remember to pull it out!

  325. I do. I have four daughters that I homeschool 🙂 I put a load in the washer in the morning, and do three loads in a row. I also put a load in at night, and transfer it to the dryer in the morning. 🙂 This would be a dream come true for me. I put everything I have into caring for my family. I would love to be able to upgrade my washing machine, and spruce up my laundry room. Thank you so much for this chance! I could not imagine winning. This would change my life! I would love to have some "personality" in the laundry room. Best of luck to everyone!

    [email protected]

  326. I have four kids so needless to say, I do a ridiculous amount of laundry. I try to do 2 loads a day and each child has their own laundry basket. They each have to take their own laundry and put it in their drawers and such before going to bed each night.

  327. When the basket's full it gets cleaned. That's my only system! 😉 Then it may stay down in the laundry area for a few days until I get the motivation to fold. I find if I do several loads in a row then I have to move them over or something sits wet…NOT good! Stinky wet clothes seems to be enough motivation most of the time to keep it moving!

  328. I love the orange baskets in the open cabinets! What a great pop! Also going straight out to get some corkboard.. why have I never thought of that before?

  329. I keep two laundry baskets – one for whites and one for colors – in our tiny laundry closet just off the bathroom. We throw our dirty laundry directly in there, and when one is full, I run a load. As soon as laundry is clean and dry, it gets folded and separated into piles for the two of us, and it's our individual responsibility to put away our own clothes, but I put away the linens and towels. It works for us!

  330. I do mine once a week and then I am done. I have a husband and 3 boys 25, 22 and 18 they just know the routine and it's never been a problem. To me doing a load daily makes more work.

  331. I'm pretty good about keeping the clothes clean, just by starting a load every now and then. But it's impossible to get them folded and put away.

  332. I do not stay on top of putting away my laundry. My machines are in the garage and clean clothes get tossed on the couches. I fold when I have a bunch or need a place to suit.

  333. Love the slab on top of the washer & dryer..great idea for renters! Any other non-permanent ideas out there? And how stinkin' gorgeous is Jenny?!

  334. I do stay on top of my laundry, but only because I'm the only member in my household. And because I stay up all night getting it done, when I forget and need something for the next day. Ha!

  335. Right now I do cause it's just the two of us…ask me again in 3 months when I have a newborn in cloth diapers and the answer will probably be very different!

  336. My husband and I go to the laundry map once a week and tackle it together. And then me go home and put the laundry away as soon as possible.

  337. Laundry is a four letter word in my house. I live in a newer home but the laundry room is still not functional. You can definitely tell the architect has never done laundry. If you just put a little thought into you can find great solutions to make it work for you. Alas, I try to keep up but with a family of 4 it tends to pile up. My motto is "I'll get to it when I'll get to it". 🙂

  339. I love your laundry room art. Can you make these available so I can print them and post them in my laundry room?
