New Skillz Goin On Here!

By Mandi 12/21/2010

So I decided to learn how to crochet today. See I got this awesome idea.
 I suck.
But hopefully it will get better.
Do you have any tips for me?
Cause I need mad help.
Also I think that I might be meant to crochet because I have a wonky finger.
What you want to see it?
Ok fine but dont judge.
Told you. Also that cute girl sitting on my lap is the one and only {Becca @ Blue Cricket Design}. She was my star for “Crafting With The Stars” and we were #1!! (hence the wonky finger…)
mmmmkay thanks!

  1. I absolutely love to crochet…. I got a how to book at Walmart and taught myself… I made SO many blankets while I waited on the girls to come home from Guatemala. Just keep practicing…

  2. I would love to crochet, but alas I also suck, even though I don’t have the advantage of a wonky finger. I tried to crochet a beginner’s circle but it turned out like a post bris foreskin. Maybe I had the tension wrong..
Love your blog! Merry Christmas to you.

  3. Figure out how you learn things best. Video tutorial? Written out? In person? Or try them all. Do you mirror instructions you see, are you left handed or right? I didn’t really learn until I watched videos of it, and with each new stitch I come across in a pattern, I google for another video to show me. Good luck!

  4. If I can do it, YOU can do it– because I am an idiot at all things like that. It just takes an hour of practice over and over, and then all of a sudden (seriously it will be ALL of a sudden), you’ll be like: Oh yeah! So easy!

  5. I tend to be an anxious crochet-er. And I pull the yarn really tight. It helps me to go up a size of hook, just so it’s closer to the size the pattern is actually meant to be. But, don’t worry, you’ll get it!

  6. I love to crochet it calms me down and is somewhat relaxing for me. I found that you tube is very helpful when readying patterns and understanding how a stitch is done. It does take practice but starting out with a small square is usually the best thing to start off with because you can find your tension. Thats my hardest part.

  7. I want to learn too!!!! and sewing! and maybe baking? nah.. not baking! but for sure anything involving yarn and thread!!!

my fingers are all dented and slanted… they’re absurd. lol

  8. My grandma taught me to crochet decades ago, and I took it up again about five years ago. What I forgot, though, is that you don’t count the loop on your hook when you make your base chain…took me forever to figure out why I could never follow a pattern properly! YouTube has been tremendously helpful in learning new techniques, and if you sign up for a free Ravelry account, you can get access to tons of great free patterns to try out.

  9. Dear Mandi,

    YouTube is your crochet BFF.

Let me know when you become obsessed like me and I’ll point you to the bestest patterns on Etsy.

    Hugs and kisses,
    Emily

  10. I’m not a pro but I can help you with the basics . . .wonky finger and all 🙂 We’ll have to do lunch, thrift, and crochet . . .now that sounds like great fun!!! Oh I have a fantastical blanket you need to make!!!

  11. You tube can be your friend. There are a lot of Videos to get you started on basics and later if you want to do other Funky things there are tons of Videos on more complete things. Just realized Emily up there just said that… Etsy does have great pattern designers. Mamachee is my favorite hers are easy to read, understand and Whip up. Crochet Today Magazine is not half bad either that way you do not always have to go online to crochet you can have a magazine right next to you.
    ALL the best

  12. I love to crochet! I learn a lot of stitches from Teresa at crochetmania.blogspot.com
She has a lot of videos, I totally suck at reading patterns. lol
It’s so relaxing! Good luck! you’ll totally get it 🙂
