I have had a few pretty major room makeovers using Board and Batten. It is my FAVORITE way to bring white walls into a room and still give it visual interest. I wasn’t planning on doing a tutorial on this but I have had SO many emails about it I thought I would share a quick tutorial. This is the cheapest, easiest way I have found to do Board and Batten. And cheap and easy are a pretty great combo…

The pictures are going to be a collection of the last 3 Board and Batten projects that I have done, so if they don’t match that is why! This is also a great case of do as I say not as I do.

Head to your local Lowes or Home Depot. In the lumber section they have big 4×8 sheets of MDF. MDF is a really dense particle board that has a flat smooth finish. I have encountered 2 different types; one has a little bit larger pieces of wood in it (like you can actually see the particles) and the second looks really similar to cardboard. The first one is the one that I prefer. It takes a cut cleaner and doesn’t seem to soak in the paint as badly on the cut edges.

There are quite a few different thicknesses of MDF. I usually get the 1/2” but in Hailee’s Room Makeover we used 3/4” and it looked awesome. Its just going to be a personal preference yo.

Ok so now that you have your giant sheet of MDF you need it cut. Home Depot and Lowes have huge saws that will rip cut it into pretty perfect pieces. Just tell them the thickness that you want it to be. I prefer something between 3-4”. So you will end up with a bunch of pieces of MDF that are 4”x8’.

Now the order that you put everything together is what is hard sometimes. I have tried it 5 different ways and this is the way I prefer to do it.

Start by painting your wall the color you want it to be. It is MUCH easier to roll on the color without a bazillion corners. Because we were going to have someone come and spray Hailee’s we didn’t do this but you an see how we took the top wall color down far enough that we didn’t have to go back and touch it up.

When you are figuring out the measurements for your Board and Batten take the width of your wall and subtract the total width of your boards, then divide it by the # of sections that you want That will give you your spacing between boards.

For example:

Lets say our wall is 5 feet (60 inches) and you want 4 sections in your Board and Batten. You had your pieces cut to 3”wide strips and you are using 4 so that is 12” total width ,  your math would look like this: (60-12)/4. Each of the spaces between your boards is going to be 12”.

So the next step is to cut a guide piece that is 12” long. That way you can perfectly space your boards all across the wall.

Start by putting your cross board (or boards depending on the length of the wall) up first. If you are doing an entire wall floor to ceiling then place it right against the ceiling. If you are starting the B&B partway down the wall use a laser level to place your board.

Once your cross piece is up you will start putting your first board up. This would be the board right against the edge of your wall. Make sure that it is level ALL THE WAY DOWN. The easiest way to level it is to start in the middle with one nail  then go down and level and nail the bottom. Then go up to the top and do the same. Then secure it more with a few nails in between. And don’t be surprised if your walls aren’t level, just make sure your boards are. You can go back and fill the gaps with putty.

Continue this for the entire wall.

If you are doing cross boards now is when those are installed. Cut a guide piece and do it the same way you did before but this time it will measure vertically instead of horizontally. The white board in this picture is my guide.

Now I am going to tell you a little secret. Some of you might hate me for life but, you gotta do what you gotta do.

At Hailee’s house there was NO WAY the boards were going to wrap perfectly from her hallway entrance over to her kitchen entrance. I mean that is like a 1 in a million chance. So we started at the hallway entrance and went 1/2 way across the windows and stopped. Then we went to the kitchen entrance and went the opposite way and stopped 1/2 way across the windows again. The reason is because of the curtains and the couch were always going to be there (yes, even if she moves the couch you can’t tell that a board is missing)  That way it looks perfect and the wonky is hidden! (You can see where we skipped the board in the picture below)

Once all of your boards are up it is time to putty. I prefer to use drywall spackle. There is a special kind that you can get that starts pink and turns white when it dries. Fill in all of your seams and nail holes.

While that is drying its time to caulk. If you want it to look legit you wont skip this step. It makes such a big difference.

You can buy white or clear caulk, it doesn’t matter, just make sure its paintable. I like to use the smaller squeeze bottles of caulk because the caulking gun hurts my hand… Cut the tip at an angle,  there is a guide on the tip of the caulk on where to cut it. With the long tip on the top gently squeeze a line of caulk into the corner where your board meets your wall. Then with a damp rag over your fingertip wipe all the way down the caulk line. This will get off all of the excess.

This next step is extra fast if you have a palm sander. Take a piece of fine grit sandpaper to the drywall putty once it is dry to smooth it out. I also run it along the edges of all of the boards to soften them just a hair.

Take a damp washcloth or a piece of tack cloth and wipe off all of the dust. You need a clean surface to paint.

If your board and batten ends on an exposed corner and the corners of you wall are rounded you will need to fill in the huge gap. Just use the same drywall putty as before and know that it will take a while to dry. It doesn’t have to be perfectly smooth but just make sure that it doesn’t dip below where your edge is. You will lightly sand it when its dry and it will be seamless!

We also had to do that on this corner because of the curve in the wall.

Now its time to paint! I 100% recommend using a Purdy White Dove Roller. It will give you a much smoother texture than a regular roller and last for SO much longer.

You can prime the MDF if you want, but I usually don’t. I just use a paint and primer in one. You will probably have to do a couple of coats on the edges of your boards because the MDF soaks it up. Especially if you got the MDF that I hate. I use a Purdy brush for this because it holds a lot of paint and lets face it, Purdy brushes make you look like a better painter than you really are.

Sometimes fun architectural details in your home are the hardest things to decorate. I know when we were shopping for our house every nook and alcove I was immediately drawn to. It adds character right?! In the end though sometimes these spaces are really complicated to decorate.

In Hailee’s Living Room Makeover we encountered this exact situation. And this is what we did.

Before it was plain Jane.

The only thing going for it was that there was a can light inside.

“But Mandi…” you may be saying, “… I can’t change out a can light fixture, the hole is WAY too big for anything else to be able to fit there!”

The secret to getting a can light turned into a pedant light is SOOOO freakishly easy you might want to kiss me.

Did you know that you an buy a Can Light Convertor at Home Depot? It is a kit that turns a can light into something else!

I don’t have during installment pictures seeing as how Hailee’s husband is an electrician and had it installed before I could get my camera…

But the after looks like this:

Now on to the fixture.

Found it at the DI (Utah’s Version of Goodwill) for $5.00. It was one of those heavens parting, angels singing type moments.

I knew that we wanted a schoolhouse light.

Home Depot only sells the globes. ($5.00 BTW!)

So, that meant that we had to find something that hung down and held the globe. Which we could not find ANYWHERE.

So after hunting (and lets be honest, silently praying) we found this fellow in the back corner of the lighting shelves. I think I might have screeched in excitement….

Clearly some DIYer had already gotten to it seeing as how it was painted and glazed. So I started to paint it. I used Tempo Teal from Sherwin-Williams (one of the 5 best teals ever…the other 4 are also from Sherwin-Williams #truestory) and then glazed it.

I LOVE how it fills the space without overwhelming it and I love how much character it gives with its vintage schoolhouse feel.

Yep, the genius’ at Krylon have done it again. Are you surprised?…cause I’m not. Introducing da da da da! Krylon’s new Glitter Blast!!

The question of the day became where in your house can you use glitter without it being a holiday, or related to your 8 year old daughter? So I thought and thought about it.

If you have read Vintage Revivals for very long you know that I love taking things that are total opposites and putting them together to create something that is unique and sort of brave. So this is what I came up with:

Oh yes, my friends that is a wood grain glitter lampshade.

You can close your mouths now.

This is one of my favorite projects ever. I am obsessed with how cool it is. What is more opposite than wood and glitter? Not much…Want to learn how to make one?

The most important part is Krylon’s new Glitter Blast. Have you ever used glitter spray paint before? I have and it sucks. Not enough glitter too much “paint”. I was SHOCKED when I used the Glitter Blast. I am never going to have to buy an overpriced glitter ball ornament again. Holla!!

This stuff is a spray of SOLID glitter. The color that I used was Golden Glow. I am so impressed with this product there aren’t even words. You have to try it for yourselves. I have never seen anything like this as far as the glitter concentration goes, aside from putting glue down and sprinkling loose glitter on it. (You would NEVER be able to do a project like this with that technique.)  This stuff is just amazing.

Ok now for the tutorial.

Start out with a lampshade. I got mine at Target for $15.00 (see what happens when you NEED something? You pay way too much. Hoarders unite!)

Measure the widest part of your shade to make sure you use a long enough piece of vinyl.

I created the wood grain pattern and cut it out with my Silhouette.

**If you don’t want to invest 4+ hours it will take to make your own wood grain image you can buy the exact one that I made for super cheap! (cough cough $5.00 $4.00 for 3 days only!) And we can be TWINNERS!!

It is a really detailed design and will take a few minutes to cut out. I was using not awesome vinyl from the craft store and had to watch it very closely to make sure that a piece didn’t lift and grab the roller and mess the whole thing up. Cause it did. Twice.

Next you will weed it:

If your shade is perfectly cylindrical then you don’t need to do this. If it tapers, you will. Cut your design into strips so that you can put it on and keep it straight.

There were lots of pieces that I had to put on by hand. (Because cheap vinyl doesn’t really stick to the fabric on the lampshade. If you use shades like the ones I used in the Epic Room Makeover  it would be WAY easier to put it on) Its sorta tedious but totally worth it.

Now for the best part! Its time to GLITTERIZE!

When you are using Glitter Blast make sure you shake it really well. Start your spray off of your project (it takes a second for the glitter to come out) but when it does you are going to LOVE IT!! Do a few light coats. (I did 2)  If you make it too thick your vinyl will take some of the glitter spray off when you are peeling it away. (yes, I learned that the hard way too) so spray it until its solid but not heavy.

Then while your paint is still wet peel of your design (I used tweezers and it went really fast).

Ok, so lets say that you are like me and put your spray on too heavy in a few spots and the vinyl took some of it off. Its such an easy fix you are going to die. And maybe want to kiss me.

Spray some Glitter Blast onto your go to paint holder:

Then take a small brush and paint it on. Seriously. Because it is already textured you can’t tell where you had to add it.

I wish you guys could see this in real life. It is out of this world amazing.

I think I have gotten more emails about this tutorial (or lack thereof) than anything else lately.

I originally did this project when I was getting ready for The Nate Show but when I was putting it together I was on such a time constraint and my camera was dead that I didn’t have time to wait for the battery to charge.

I knew immediately that I wanted to do this project for the Epic Makeover because there was such a small skinny wall between the 2 doors.

First what you need is wood. You can use new or old, whatever you prefer.

On mine I used newer wood that was already stained; on Jessica’s I used old pallet wood.

Secure your boards together with brace pieces.

I used a nail gun because I had one handy but you can use regular nails if you want.

Once your pieces are secure bust out you vinyl. I used this roman numeral converter to figure out what the numbers were for 2006.

I used Madonna my Silhouette and the Artistamp Medium font that I love so much.

If you are doing this on reclaimed wood the vinyl wont really stick so just do the best that you can.

I used my 1.5 inch Purdy brush and all of these Decoart paints to make this sweet project a reality.

I watered down the first layer of all of these colors and randomly brushed it on. The reason is because I wanted it to look old and sometimes full strength paint looks too new. It’s a fun little trick, try it sometime!

The color I used for the first layer is Americana’s Kelly Green, super bright and exactly the shade I was going for. The reason I did it first is because I wanted it to be seen but not be the MAIN color of the piece.

Then I did the same for the second color which was Americana’s White.

and for the third Americana’s Lamp Black.

Then peel of your vinyl

Once I got it hung in Jessica’s room it seemed too dark so I took more white and did not water it down this time.

I dry brushed it on and it lightened the sign up a ton and gave more contrast between the natural wood color and the paints

For mine I used the same technique but painted it heavier with Americana’s White and Bright Yellow.

So you may hate me when I tell you this. I just bought my very first glue gun, its shameful. I needed it to make these awesome lampshades…

Ba Bam

Seriously one of the easiest ways to add character to décor is to jazz it up with a bit of funkification.

So here are 3 simple tutorials for how to jazz your crap.

For this striped one I used felted wool.

Cut your wool into 3” strips. Then you are going to press them in 1/2 hot dog style.

Start by pulling down a line of glue. Curl your edge in so that its not all wonky sticking off your shade.

Then you are just going to stick it to the shade wavish like. You can separate it with your finger while sticking it down to give it a fuller look.

Just keep gluing it back and forth until you are out of fabric.

Pretty simple right?

So to make this lamp you are going to use the same technique but first you are going to ruffle the burlap. Ruffling burlap is cake. You are just going to find the middle string and ruffle it by pulling on it.

We all know and love Anthro. When I saw this baby I was all “dude. You could totally make that.”

So I started with iron on transfer paper that you print on. Its was super cute. See?

But when you turned on the light you couldn’t see the frame at all.

FAIL!

So what did I do? I busted out my crafting sister wife Madonna. (Actually I was already in SLC so I called Tam and she came to my rescue)

I found this image on Silhouettes site and printed it on heat transfer vinyl. Then following the instructions I ironed it on.

Once your image is ironed on spray your shade with spray adhesive and smooth your fabric over it.

Trim and glue.

Then center your secret image in the frame and you are donezo!

Yes, that is a unicorn.

So I am not awesome at knowing what day of the week it is. Its sort of a gift I think…except the bad kind. Today is the day I was asked to post about my fah-reakin awesome Silhouette project and pass the savings along to my loverly readers. Not yesterday like I announced. It must be the spray paint fumes…

The product highlight this month is pretty much my fave product that Silhouette has. Fuzzy Heat Transfer Vinyl! To be honest the first time I tried it I hated it….cause I didn’t follow the directions very well (isn’t that usually how it works out?) So I was glad to have the chance to try it again and find that it was 100% user error. Yep, I am awesome.

So are you excited to see this project?

Also, I am sort of obsessed with the Leg Lamp this week apparently.

And it has a secret…(thanks for the idea Anthro)

You know you want a Silhouette just so you can make this lampshade right?

Here is how I did it.

I found my image online and my friend Mique tweeted me this link on how to make any online image work on your Silhouette.

Once I had my image formatted I loaded my Flocked (fuzzy) Heat Transfer Vinyl and cut it out.

Then I “weeded” my image. This is what it looked like before (after I weeded the outer layer and the foot) and after:

If you are doing detailed designs like this the Picker Tool is a MUST. Seriously, just trust.

Then you follow the instructions on the package to transfer your image…DO NOT TRY AND RUSH THE PROCESS BY STEAMING IT. FYI. Cause I tried that. And it didn’t work. At all. The End.

Find an old lampshade that you don’t have any emotional attachment to and spray it with your fave spray adhesive:

Then smooth your fabric around the shade. I also hot glued the edges around the top and bottom.

For the surprise inside I just cut out of dark cardstock my words put spray adhesive on the front of them and stuck them inside my shade. (You could also use dark vinyl just make sure you mirror your image!)

And there you go! Pretty much the coolest lampshade on the planet.

This is one of my favorite projects that I did for The Nate Show and I am so excited to be finally sharing it over here!

You will need:

A framed mirror (make sure the mirror isn’t older than 1980’s, if you are unsure you can have them cut at any glass store for really cheap)

Paint Stripper

Muriatic Acid

Silhouette Premium Vinyl

Silhouette Transfer Sheet

Silhouette Hook Tool

Silhouette Scraper Tool

Spray Adhesive

Fabric

Start with your framed mirror. This is one that I found at the thrift store for $2.00.

Take the backing off of your frame

Carefully remove the mirror, take it outside and place it face down on a soft surface. (I used a towel cause hello you can totally wash it!)

Put a big glob of stripper on the back of it and spread it around with a paint brush.

Let it sit for about 15 min. Every mirror that you do will be different. On some the paint comes off really easiy and on others you have to scrape it off. There is no way of knowing which its going to be…sorry!! But its sort of like a secret birthday surprise finding out what happens!

On this particular mirror the underlayer of paint was red and it came off really easily.

See how the back side of the mirror is reflective?

Hang on let me clean it off…..

Much better!! Not all of the paint needs to come off and its alright.

Next I used Madonna my Silhouette to cut out my design. I used the moroccan pattern design.

Once I carefully peeled off the negatie space I used the greatest invention since sliced bread. The Hook Tool to get the rest of the negative space out. I kid you not this thing is awesome.

Then I used the Transfer Paper and Scraper to transfer it onto the back side of the mirror. Take it outside…now its time for the fun part!

Put on your neoprene gloves and very carefully spray some muriatic acid on the back of your mirror. (Muriatic acid is used to neutralize pool water and can be found at Home Depot or Lowes)Make sure that you have a hose on so that you can quickly rinse the acid off.

Depending on your mirror (once again they are all different) the acid will start to eat away the reflective coating. Sometimes it works really fast and sometimes it works really slow. Rinse it off after 5 or so seconds and see if it is working. If it seems like nothing is happening put more on and wait until you can start to see where it is eating it. The dark spot in the picture below is what it looks like when it starts to work.

Once your mirror looks the way that you want it to rinse it and dry it off. Peel off any loose pieces of vinyl. Use your favorite kind of spray adhesive. I love Krylon’s.

After its been sprayed lay your fabric face down on the back of the mirror. That way you can see the fabric through the empty spots!

Pretty awesome if I do say so myself!

The spray paint that I used is Coral Isle by Krylon. It’s the PERFECT color. I swear they are mind readers.

Chandelier!!!

Do you guys remember a couple of weeks ago when I asked if you loved this color?

75% of you loved this color as much as I do.

Its Rich Plum by Krylon. I pretty much want to paint everything in my house with it.

One of the biggest ways to add impact in a room is to change the lighting. Simple updates like that make the biggest difference ever.

My future BFF Nate Berkus did a segment a week or 2 ago where he talked about using really neutral lighting fixtures to update a space.

You know where I am going with this right?

I agree with him to a degree. If you are spending hundreds of dollars on a chandelier you should get something that will go with everything.

But.

What if you find something awesome for say $15.00 at a thrift store and add 2 cans of spray paint? Does it have to be neutral then?

I say pssh to that concept.

Something like this is much more exciting don’t you think?

The practically perfect plummy purple that pretty poignantly portrays that a person possesses a pair. (You know what kind of pair I am talking about right?)

When you shop at thrift stores and your husband knows how to rewire a light fixture then guess what? You can change things up as much as you want.

Its cost effective, different and just plain rockstar.

Cause I mean who really wants to spend $500 on a light anyway?…..

Don’t be afraid to change things up. Don’t be afraid to do something that is against  the norm. I have nothing else in my house that is purple. But guess what? I don’t care.

If I wanted stuff to be the same as everyone elses I would have left the light that was in it there.

Sometimes you create for fun,  this was created out of pure necessity.

I have tried everything to keep our toothbrushes out of my 2 year olds hands. But regardless of how hard we try she always gets atleast one a week. She then proceeds to feed it to Agnes our Bulldog. Then of course they are unuseable and I have to buy a new one. This cycle of craziness has continued until no one knows which toothbrush is theirs because I change them so often. See our problem?

Well here is my solution:

And here is how I did it.

Then I drilled 4 small holes on the underside of the frame like so:
