This is a DIY crime scene. If you are sensitive to graphic images consider yourself warned.

Last year when I was gearing up for The Hoard Sale I found a listing on Craigslist for 2 card catalogs. The pictures were bad, and the listing was super vague. But I mean, OF COURSE I had to contact the seller.

I found out that they were about 40 minutes away and were in rough shape…like they had lived in a barn outside for the last 35+ years. I cant remember what the original asking price was, I think well over $1000 but I ended up getting them both for $550 and they were able to deliver. Which was wonderful considering this thing weighs so much.

The pictures looked pretty bad, but MAAAAAAAN. It was worse than I thought.

The previous owner had used the pull out shelves to spray paint. (screen shot from the ad)

WHYYYYYYYYYY?

It was EVERYWHERE.

Not to mention that it had been living outside in the heat of Arizona. As you can imagine the veneer was toast. I’ve never seen anything like it, it was the consistency of shredded corn flakes. Luckily the drawer fronts were solid wood and were salvageable.

So I did what any normal person would do, I got to work saving the dang thing.

I needed to take the paint off of the hardware that had overspray, but I didn’t want it to look new. After testing a few different things I settled on Acetone. I put it in a large bowl and let the hardware soak for about 3 minutes. The spray paint melted off without altering the age of the brass.

Every single one of the 58 (2 were missing) drawer fronts were sanded completely. The ones that didn’t have paint had a flakey topcoat that needed to be out of both of our lives.

I LOVE how many different tones of wood are in it.

There were exactly 1 & 1/2 drawer fronts missing, as well as a few trim pieces (like the long one right under the bottom row of drawers) So I went to Home Depot and matched the wood grain as much as I could. I feel like I remember ending up with oak.

I used my saw to cut the drawer fronts and the trim pieces and attached them to the catalog directly

You can see in the picture above that it came with a pretty giant base complete with it’s own shredded corn flakes.

I debated on using Danish oil on it and tested a few drawers (the ones on the left) but decided that I liked the raw wood on the right better.

When it came time to sell it at The Hoard Sale I was having very mixed feelings about parting with it. Because dang these things are hard to find.

So I priced it higher (around $800 I think) and said if it sells, then its just not meant to be.

Much to my delight (and Court’s distain) it didn’t sell so for the last 9 months it’s been sitting in the back of the garage.

Lotioning, Oiling. Oiling. Lotioning

Until I couldn’t take it anymore!

When we moved the entire thing inside (base and all) I wasn’t convinced. The problem wasn’t the card catalog, it was the base. The base needed to go. But the catalog on the floor looked super weird too. It just needed a little something.

I went to Home Depot (seriously you guys, multiple times a day.) and bought a hefty 4×4.

We cut it down into legs that are about 5” each. Then we bolted them to the thick base inside.

It lifts it up just enough.

Turned out pretty great!

I’ve been on the hunt for a vintage leather couch for what seems like my whole dang life. The search was kicked into overdrive when the orange couch was moved into the storage unit. 2 weeks ago an ad popped up in the nearby area section of Craigslist (you guys have seen that right? When you have a specific search typed in it will pull things from the Craigslist in surrounding areas)

This was the listing:

It was one of those running around the living room screaming moments because I have not found another colored vintage leather chesterfield since this horrible tragedy in ‘12.

The problem was that it was located in Bullhead City AZ (about 4 hours south from where I live). I contacted the seller and told him that we would be in Vegas in 2 weeks and asked him if he would be willing to hold them for me. (It never hurts to ask!) He said that he couldn’t, and the reality was that I couldn’t make it down there to get them, so I had to have a broken heart about it.

THEN last Friday I sent him a text (because the time had come for our Vegas trip) and asked if they were still available.

THEY WERE!!

What??!? WHY?!? EEEEEEE! (That was what I was thinking). I asked him if he would be willing to go down on the price (because you always do that) and he said to make an offer. So I was like “How about $250?” and he said yes! HOLY MOTHER OF ALL THINGS THAT ARE HAPPY AND JOYFUL AND FULL OF JOYFULLNESS!!!

So Court and I ventured out in the wee morning hours to take the trip for the couches.

You guys. They are so good.

The only issue that they have is that the big couch has 2 buttons that are coming out. You can bet that I will be figuring out a way to fix it (even if that means taking it to an upholsterer). And lets be honest, for $250 I wouldn’t have cared if there was a possum family living inside.

But, the story doesn’t end there…also, don’t hate me ok?

(well barely. What day of the week is it?) The Hoard Sale was a MASSIVE success. Stay tuned for a post all about it,

Last week I shared my tip for getting a perfect paint job, so today I thought it would be fun to show you a project that got just that.

IKEA Rast dressers are utterly fantastic for a nightstand replacement. They are inexpensive ($34.99), small, and made out of solid wood. They were just what I needed for Macie’s Bedroom. But here is the thing. Sometimes you don’t want it to look like a Rast. Sometimes you want it to look a little nicer. Ya feel me?

After putting the dressers together the first thing that I did was putty all of the pre drilled holes and the screws. I like using the pink putty that dries white.

Pile it on nice and tall. Sort of like a wad of bubble gum. Don’t try and make it perfect at this point.

Make sure the your putty is completely dry before you start sanding.

To sand I used a 220 grit sanding sponge and a small circular motion.

Once everything is nice and smooth, give you dresser a quick wipe down with a slightly damp cloth to get the dust off. (You can also use tack cloth, but lets be honest, who has that on hand at all times?)

Once it is time to paint, you will want to follow this tutorial to a T. It will give you a perfect finish.

For those interested, here is the paint formula for the custom pink color:

Now for the REALLY fun part. Bring on the leather and brass!!

I stated by cutting a campaign shaped pull out of leather (you can upload this image into Design Space if you have a Cricut Explore and cut it with that, or you can print it off and trace it!)

The corner pieces and brass pulls are from Home Depot. To find them you will want to go down the aisle that has the pulls and knobs.

The brass corner brackets come in packs of 4, you will need 3 packages per dresser.

The pulls can be found right by the hinges and brackets. They are called Brass Utility Pulls. You will need 3 of these puppies too.

Start by gluing your leather piece onto the drawer. I decided to move mine to the top of the drawer instead of putting it in the center. Make sure that it is centered and level.

Then hold your brass handle onto the leather and mark where the screws will go.

Using a small drill bit, drill pilot holes through the leather and into the wood. Then attach the pull.

You will want to drill pilot holes for the corner brackets as well, so that you don’t split the wood.

Painting furniture has long been one of my favorite pastimes. It is always amazing to me how a little love can totally change a piece from horrifying to awe inspiring. My go to technique has always been spray painting because every time I tried to paint with normal paint it was a HORRIBLE experience. Now, I know that there are people that swear by good brushes, foam rollers, and Floetrol and I am sure that they work for some…but I have never been able to master the paint from a can technique…until now.

First lets chat about the 3 most common problems when it comes to painting.

1. Brush Strokes. Also the acronym for brush strokes is BS. Just putting that out there. Brush strokes happen when your paint dries before it has a chance to level. The stiffer (I am just going to say it, and crappier) your brush the worse it is going to look. Chip brushes are literally your worst nightmare when painting furniture. But even with expensive brushes I have never been able to paint something brush stroke free.

2. Flashing. Flashing is unevenness in a paint finish sheen. It happens for a few reasons. If you are using cheap paint, especially cheap paint that has a high sheen, trying to get too much paint out of a roller, not leaving a wet edge, and rolling all willy nilly. Flashing is extremely noticeable when light reflects off of a piece. White foam rollers are like a shifty teenager in a trench coat on the sidelines of the homecoming football game. They are perfectly poised to ruin your crowning moment. Also foam rollers=light texture. Not enough to start over but FOR SURE enough to make you want to kick the dresser every time you walk by it.

3. Stickiness After Drying. Have you guys ever been in contact with a piece of furniture that never fully cured? It is eternally sticky to the touch. This happened once to a piece that was in my Mother In Law’s house. It was a four poster bed that was painted high gloss black and it was unusable because it was so sticky. This can happen for a few reasons, your paint could be crappy quality, there wasn’t adequate dry time between layers. It seems like the higher the sheen, the more you risk this being a factor. Plain and simple, latex wall paint is not ideal for furniture.

So do you want to know what the secret combo is for a perfect paint job?

Sherwin Williams Pro Classic and a Mohair Roller. I kid you not, you will never go back once you have tried this combo. (See this post for updated paint and roller info!)

Start by prepping you piece with a light sanding and a good cleaning. (By light sanding i mean the way you would wipe down a wall)

Load your roller.

This is the most important part so listen and listen good. Roll it on with only a few passes, I am talking 3. Don’t worry so much about coverage, you can do more than one coat. Just make sure that there aren’t any globby areas.

Now put your roller down and walk away. When the paint starts to dry and you mess with it, it is just a recipe for disaster and will always look worse when you are done.

And then you will hate yourself. So just trust.

This is a freshly rolled drawer vs. one that has had time to dry, can you see how much the paint relaxes and evens out?

I have never had something work so well time and time again. You guys, this is the real deal.

My only request? Don’t hug me too tight when you see me next. I love my guts intact.

Happy Monday my loves!! I thought it might be a little fun to start off this week with a glance backward. I have been so busy with projects and holiday’s and being out of town that it has been a long time since I have hit up my beloved thrift store. Finally on Friday I had a few minutes to stop by and MAN the Thrifting Gods must have missed my happy face, because I totally scored!

First find on the list is this Mid Century coffee table set.

The tops are made out of Formica and I LOVE the gold inlay. It reminds me of the facade of “It’s a Small World”. But the legs are what sold me. Price? $15 for the coffee table and $12 for each of the two tier end tables.

Thrift Store Art is my favorite kind. It just makes me SO happy! Last year I even did a series on it called Thrift Store Art Warms My Heart.

So my heart was basically on fire when I found this embroidered bird picture. I am mighty obsessed with the colors and the different patterns. It was a little expensive at $10 but I knew that if I didn’t get it, I would regret it. Art is a lot easier to find a home for than a piece of furniture.

I also found these black and white sketches of the organs in the LDS Tabernacle and Assembly Hall. They totally remind me of these pictures I found last year.

The one thing that I did pass up? A giant bag of Pogs. I ALMOST bought them but they were $25 and I couldn’t justify spending more on a bag of Pogs than I did on a table.

Time for uterus wrenching jealousy to take hold.

Time for you to see all of the amazing furniture possibilities that you couldn’t have created in your wildest dreams.

Time for you to become insta-BFFs with these people…because one day far far away they might want to sell, and you have to secure your first place in line. I know I am.

This of course means that it is time for the next Cold Dead Fingers post, where I show off YOUR favorite pieces of furniture to the world so we can all oogle and be inspired! Make sure you hashtag #colddeadfingers on Instagram for your change to be featured!

I think that this campaign buffet is pretty much the most amazing thing of my life. I would honestly trade any piece of furniture in my house for it. I mean, this is like the Hope Diamond of campaigners.

We have been through our fair share of kitchen tables in our family. The cheap black distressed counter height table with stools that chipped when you gave it a dirty look. A gorgeous reclaimed wood table that was too long for our little space. And last but not least, a painted teal table that I was over after a few months. Its part of my DADD condition ( Decorating ADD if you are unfamiliar with the term. We jokingly refer to it at our house as Dad issues.)

Painted tables are just a little too much maintenance, and Court did not love the reclaimed wood (he felt like it was never clean) so that left me with 2 options. Metal or Glass. And since I have not yet learned the art of welding (don’t worry one day I will) glass it was.

I am super digging a warm modern industrial vibe right now and thought it would be fun to try my hand at building a pipe table. I wanted something unique but it needed to be easy for me to wrap my head around too.

First things first. Lets chat pipe. The pipe that I used is Rigid Steel Electrical Conduit. You 100% want to buy this from Lowes because they can cut it to your exact dimensions and thread it there. The rigid is important because they also sell electrical conduit that is very thin and cannot be threaded, therefore totally worthless for building anything, especially a kitchen table. FYI you can also find Rigid Steel Plumbing Conduit at Lowes, the only difference is that it is a bit more expensive because it is treated so that it is safe to use for drinking water. Save the $ for something important.

This is the awesome machine that cuts and treads the pipe. It uses lots of oil to help with lubrication while threading so be aware of that if you are transporting them in your car. Just ask for extra plastic bags to put on the ends to protect your carpeting.

As part of my DADD I have a mind that looks at a million components of the project all at the same time (it makes Court CRAZY.) But before I could get all pipe happy, I needed to find a piece of glass so I knew what my measurements for the table base needed to be. Glass table tops are FREAKING expensive FYI. I kept an eye out on Craigslist for one to pop up and at $100 it LITERALLY saved me $1,000. I know. $1,100 was the quote I received on glass. Such a better choice to go used. My glass measures 3’x5’

Now for some important bullet points:

You guys know that I am all about girl power. In fact, most of the building projects at my house are done by me while Court is at work. But. Unless you are like a legit female bodybuilder, you will need someone strong to tighten all of the joints in this table. I tried to put this together while Court was out of town one week and it didn’t work so great.

In my mind I thought I would have to have almost all of the pieces custom cut for my table. In reality, I only had to have the long pieces cut. All of the short pieces are precut (which is FANTASTIC for everyone involved.)

While this may seem obvious to everyone else I just need to share. Measurements for the pipe goes from end to end including the threading. So if you are going to come up with your own measurements be aware of that fun fact. And you will also need to factor in the space for the fittings (for example a T fitting adds about 1” to your total measurement because it has to have room to accommodate the pipe that comes out of the bottom.

Now for the fun part.

To build this table you will need:

(1) Pipe Joint Compound (this lubricates the treads and makes it easier to tighten, it is a must have.)

(4) Floor Flanges (roughly $6.00 each)

(8) 90 degree Elbows

(12) T Joints (they look like a T!)

(4) Bushings (roughly $9.00 each)

(8) 10” Pipe

(12) 3.5” Pipe

(8) 8” Pipe

(4) 50” Pipe (these are the ones you will have to have custom cut and threaded at Lowes.)

Pipe Wrench (or 2)

Start by building your table top (aka the part that is going to hold your glass)

We found it worked really well to use a smaller piece of pipe temporarily to tighten all of the elbows and Ts, because you can get more leverage than you can just holding onto the fitting.

This is SUPER important to note. Every time you are completing a closed shape (like a square or rectangle) you need to have 1 of 2 things happen. To screw both ends tightly into your fittings you need to have one side reverse threaded (which I believe only exists in a real life metal working shop, they did not do it anywhere that I could find here) OR you need to screw one end of the pipe very deeply into the joint so that it will have room to unscrew a little while screwing it into the other end, (deep enough that it wont come all the way off of the first end.) This is the technique that we used and it worked great (because of my husbands massive muscles and my cheering.)

The only place that you will encounter this backward twisting situation is the table top support. It will be the center bar and one of the small pieces (because technically there are 2 rectangles being created.) . When you are doing this (especially with the middle crossbar, it helps to have your pipe screwed into one end and angle the T so that you can rotate it to be on the end of the pipe.)

The Pipe Unions on the legs have a giant nut that connects them together so you wont have this problem there.

This is a Pipe Union. They are a little bit expensive (about $9.00 each) but they add character and simplify the building process.

Here is a detailed diagram of all of the components so that you know exactly how to assemble your table.

It is very important for the stability of your table to have a cross piece at the bottom. That way if your fat cousin Kenny comes over and happens to sit on your new table it wont flatten.

To prevent the glass from sliding I used clear rubber disks on each corner elbow, and they have worked PERFECTLY.

I absolutely LOVE this table. Total cost including the glass was around $350. No too shabby if I do say so myself.

We DVRed Bedknobs and Broomsticks a few months ago and my girls LOVE it. Which makes my garage sale bed even better!!

Can you believe that this bed was only $10.00?

I met some of my favorite readers for lunch like FOREVER ago. When we were leaving the mentioned a yard sale they saw just down the street, and you guys know me, I am ALWAYS up for a yard sale. And there is was. For only 10 bucks. I might have ran to it…in heels…on a gravel path…and almost fell…BUT I GOT THE BED YO!

Isnt it the perfect Bedknobs and Broomsticks Bed?! Off to the Island of Naboombu!

And if it looks like its been jumped on, its because it has.

Sometimes you need to do something more than just paint an old piece of furniture. Sometimes you need something that is unique and crazy awesome. While walking down the isles of my local home improvement warehouse the idea dawned on me. PVC Pipe Yo! You can TOTALLY update furniture with plumbing supplies!

This dresser was found at a garage sale for $50.00. It was SO solid and had recessed drawer fronts which are THE BEST kind to get. (you can see another way to update a dresser here). There was no way that Hailee and I were going to pass it up.

We had to take it apart to move it (cause it was flippin heavy and we were the brains AND the muscle of the operation.) and I never got it all back together for a good before shot.(Shame on me, I know) But from these pics you can see how the drawers looked originally.

We purchased an 8’ piece of PVC pipe that was 2” around. I believe it cost around $6.00

Hailee’s husband Mark got to it before I could (he is every DIYers dream, a guy that does projects BEFORE he is asked? Sheesh.)

Anyways, he marked every 1/2″ all the way down the pipe. And used a compound miter saw to cut each mark. It didn’t take as long as you might think.

To make sure that they were all even he cut on the inside of each line. With the width of the saw blade they were about 3/8” thick.

Before After

And then by some sort of Saturday morning miracle they fit perfectly in the drawer fronts. The last pieces had to be cut in 1/2 but that was it.

When you are cutting PVC with a saw there are A LOT of shavings. Like it might look like December in your garage. To make sure that the drawers are clear of them before you paint use a blow dryer to blow them all off.

The PVC fit so perfectly and tight in the fronts that we did not glue every single circle. We just put glue in a few spots to make sure that it stayed in place.

Once everything is place and cleaned and dry its time to paint!!!

First prime with Kilz Spray Primer. This piece has laminate on the top and sides so you need something that has great adhesion since there is no sanding involved.

One the primer is dry you are ready to spray paint!

I used Krylon’s Classic White in Gloss. When you use a primer like Kilz it tones down the gloss finish of spray paints. Normally its fine, but I wanted this piece to be high gloss white so I did a few extra coats to build up the gloss finish. I think we used 6 cans of spray paint on this entire piece.

And there you go! A SUPER cheap way to get an incredible piece of one of a kind furniture.

I have been wanting to stop there for months…like every time I drove by to do Studio 5, but was always in too big of a hurry.

But last time I was on I went back.

You know how Alice falls through the rabbit hole and is in her Wonderland?

This is like that minus the evil queen and weird caterpillar.

I was talking to one of my BBFF’s Brooke @ All Things Thrifty about how I wanted to shout from the rooftops this amazing store. Because of its location (right off the 6th south 1-15 off ram) LOADS of people see it but few stop. Its like this crazy huge secret.

As I was sharing it with her I came to the conclusion that its practically impossible to describe. You have to see it to believe it.

So we decided we would meet up in Salt Lake and make a video for you guys to get a glimpse of the overwhelming awesomeness that is Euro Treasures Antiques.

As your tour guides we are here to prepare you for the EXPERIENCE of Euro Treasures. Its so much more than a warehouse of the CRAZIEST furniture you will ever in your life see. I swear the first time someone goes there they go through the grief cycle because it is just that overwhelming.

You will need:

*2 hours (at least)

*A paper bag in case you start to hyperventilate.

*A buddy, cause there is waaaay too much stuff for 1 person to take in.

*Smelling salts if you are a fainter.

*A camera to take pics of what you love. Because of the sheer volume of pieces they have you WILL forget what you saw.

*Possibly a thesaurus if you are the intellectual type, because “Oh My GOSH” “Amazing” and “Unreal” will be COMPLETELY over used while you are inside. There are just no other words.

So now that you are prepared here is a little video that we put together for you! I know its kind of longish but SOOOO worth watching.

Are you DYING?

I know you are.

So where did it all come from?!?!

Scott knew a man from England that had a 7 story antique store. He was a hoarder in the most wonderful way. He became ill and sold most of his pieces to Scott and his wife. Just so you get an idea of the amount of stuff, it took them 3 years of actively working to ship everything to the US. There is SO MUCH STUFF that there are items that have still not been gone through by Scott and his staff…after more than 8 years.

One thing that you also need to know about Euro Treasures is that these are legit antiques. Most of the items are from the 17th and 18th century. These are NOT thrift store items. They have things ranging in price from $10-$100,000.00. Just be aware that that amazing piece that you want to take home and spray paint might be $5,000.00.

Scott has put together a section of bargains. Everything is $200 or less. Just know if you venture beyond that (which you TOTALLY will that the prices can be higher).

Here are some of my favorite pieces from the bargain section:

p.s. how sweet would that chair be painted white with gray chevron stripes on the back? Freakin cute, that’s how.

This credenza/buffet is only $200.00

So what now?

Well if you are within driving distance of Salt Lake get there! If you are not you need to fly in just to come here.

The pieces that are marked down wont last long, so get there NOW if you are looking for high quality antiques to add to your décor.

If you need a tour guide in real life we can meet up next time I am in town and I will be there to pass the smelling salts!

And when you are there make sure to tell Scott Hi from Mandi and Brooke.

In the interest of full disclosure we have received nothing from Euro Treasures. We just love you guys and knew you would want to know about it!!

Make sure that you click over to All Things Thrifty and read Brooke’s post too!
