We Are Moving TOMORROW!!

By Mandi 01/03/2017

Guys!! Things are hitting a fever pitch around here!! We are closing on our house tomorrow! I am having a whole bunch of mixed emotions about it. This is the first time I’ve really moved. My parents have lived in the same house since before I was born. Granted I moved off to college, and we moved out of our crappy apartment into our house, but this, this is different. We are leaving our home, and it feels strange. I mean when does it really sink in? When you leave for the very last time? When there is nothing left inside? I need to know when all of the emotions are going to hit me.

The first stop on our journey with an unclear destination is my inlaw’s basement. I’m totally a “lets all live in a compound and have a community garden” type person and so I’m feeling very excited about this. Their house has a whole basement that is in dire need of an overhaul, so we’ll be working on that and turning it into a basement apartment fit for a king.

As I’m sitting here on my couch (the only piece of furniture left in our house besides the beds) and look around at this place, I just feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude. Without this blank canvas house, chances are that I never would have met any of you.

I’m going to do a proper memory lane post but for now I’m here saying, Happy New Year!! We’re drowning in donation bags, ready for homelessness, and I’m hoping I can keep my plant friends alive but we are good. Really good.

  1. yay, good luck! We just moved into our first house from an apartment that we’ve been living in for years. I feel like it still hasn’t hit me that the apartment is no longer home and this house is ours now… and I’m wondering when this new place will actually feel like a home. Good luck with the weird business of moving.

  2. Congrats! I can’t wait to see how you transform the basement. I would love to see a series all about how y’all live together.

  3. Congrats and have fun with your new living arrangement! Can’t wait to see what amazing things the new year holds for your sweet family!

  4. Oh my dear sweet Mandi, it is already happening but it is going to hit you hard when you have to leave for the last time. The first (and hardest) time was when our childhood home was sold. It needed to happen, Mom could not maintain it and it was too big. I kept telling myself it was just a structure, but it had so many family memories it was like loosing an appendage. The fact that a new family was moving in to make their own memories is what gave me peace. Though I have to admit I drive by it at least once a year.

The second time was when I sold the first home I owned, it was part of a divorce and again it was the right thing to do. It was the only home my sons knew so it was hard to leave. But again I found solace in the fact that we had a fresh new beginning which we direly needed. I found a new home for us and the boys are now grown but I hope to live here as long as possible.

Congratulations on your new adventure, you are going to ROCK IT! Can’t wait to take the ride with you!

  5. Wow, this house saga has been crazy and I was only reading about it! Loving it must have been insane.

I can’t wait to see what you do with the basement and also what that amazing dream home you have is… Can’t wait to see details!

  6. I will say a prayer for your family’s move to go great and for y’all and the kids to get settled in. My family is nearing the end of our journey staying with my parents while we saved to transition to our next home. It’s a great experience for the kids- my 15-year old has accrued new respect for my husband and I, seeing how hard we work to be successful. All three of us are sure of this now: wherever we are, as long as we are together, we are GOOD. God Bless You and Your Family Mandi:)

  7. I am 53 and this home is my 41st move! We have owned this home for 7.5 yrs. 2nd longest place I have ever lived. Our house in Ohio was 8 yrs. we moved 4 times the first year out of college. All cross country moves! I want a forever home for retirement!
    Excited for your new adventures!!

  8. Good luck! This moving business is not for the faint hearted. Watching the furniture leave is worst for me, but once you have a new project to get stuck into all nostalgia recedes. Good luck

  9. I also need to know they emotional schedule of moving! We are moving from Lincoln, NE to KC in three weeks. I’m super sad to leave our house in Lincoln! So many memories! ?

  10. Hope the move went smoothly! I actually just moved across the country myself, was a very stressful process for me! Had all of this furniture and wasn’t sure what to keep and what to get rid of. Ended up just ditching my furniture and hired Furnishr over at http://www.furnishr.com to furnish my new apartment Needless to say I’m happy that all of the stresses of moving are over!

  11. I just did this. Sold “my” house that I had be customizing for 4 years (including a Moroccan-tile-inspired ceiling treatment, among other things). I was totally 100% fine during the whole sale process and move, until I was cleaning up all the dust bunnies after the movers had gone. I was leaving out the back door, turned around and said “Bye, House” and started crying my eyes out. It was so much more emotional than I had thought. But I’m all good now, having just completed my first big project in the new house. It’s funny what a gallon of paint and a dozen 1x4s can do to lift your spirits!

  12. Mandy~

  13. Inch actually going through this right now. This is our first home we have owned together and brought my 3 kids home to and we just moved and are getting ready to close on it. I get emotional just thinking about my house and having somewhere else live there, it’s just such a weird feeling and thought. I know with time hopefully it will get better but it’s really hard! It’s an emotional attachment for me! Good luck to you guys hope all goes well. PS. I’m Justin Evans little sister, Kit Goulding is my husband you know the Xbox/golfing crew?
