The Secret To Tarnish Brass In One Easy Step!

By Mandi 05/11/2012

This is so easy it almost doesn’t even deserve a post. Almost.

Start with your not so beautiful shinny brass item. In my case it was an $8.00 thrift store lamp inspired by this.

Use Grecian Gold Rub-N-Buff. DO NOT USE Antique Gold. Its really peachy and looks completely foreign on the brass. You can get it at most craft stores like Michaels.

Rub-N-Buff

With an old T Shirt rub it on to your piece,  it doesn’t have to be perfect!

Ta Da! You are done!

So much better right?!

  1. Would like to antique or update our living room ceiling fan without buying another one (high cathedral ceiling also!!) Wonder if we should try this?? Would really like to make it more antique brass though. Any suggestions?

    1. I updated our bedroom ceiling fan which had awful bright brass with rub n buff. It worked great, although I wanted a nickel finish so I used silver. I would think any rub n buff would work though. I didn’t want to have to take down the fan so I just rubbed it on while it was still up. Just thought I’d add my 2c for ytxrose!

  2. Oh, I really like that. And easy is always a good thing! b.t.w. totally recognized the D.I. price tag on the before pic…lol…unless it’s not D.I., then nevermind.

  3. mandi, Ha ha Funny story. I almost bought those lamps at the D.I the other day. And Not to make you to sad there where two of them. I totally thought of you when I saw them though. Love what you did to it. Chow.

  5. I used Antique Gold and I regret is so much! I should have listened to your warning but I didn’t and now my side table went from brass to some weird copper 🙁 But lesson learned and ordered a new tube!
