Wooden Disk Hanging Planter + $200 Home Depot Giveaway

By Mandi 05/06/2015

After years of regrettable plant killing mistakes, I finally feel like I’ve learned enough to keep them alive (the obvious reward for this situation is to buy more plants!!). Which means…(you know what this means right?) I need more planters. Its like the gift that just keeps on giving.

I have the most beginner DIY friendly for those that are itching to use some power tools but aren’t ready to build anything massive yet. (Or if you don’t have tools, this is such a quick job I’m sure you can bribe your neighbor with cookies and they’ll totally do it for you)  Its kind of one of those projects that you cant screw up.

  19. My favorite plant is one I can’t kill, so, um…cacti? I am obsessed with air plants, but have killed several of them so my husband won’t let me buy any more. He’s says it’s an act of public service on his part but I think he’s just being unfair. 🙂

Stems of tiny white blooms that had to most intoxicating and sweet smell that enveloped the whole house. Never got a repeat though.

  40. Fiddle Leaf Fig – I am obsessed with those broad, flat, green leaves. Can’t wait to watch mine grow.

  41. My favorite is the kind you don’t have to water. Or remember that you own. You know, the fake kind. Do you know how hard it is to kill an aloe vera plant? I do.

  42. My current favorite is any blooming succulent. In fact, I’m preparing to change my high water use grass yard to a low water use one with lots and lots of succulents!

  54. My favorite are daisies. I have a garden full of Shasta daisies that I’m anxiously awaiting their blooms.

  55. I love Jade plants. Mine has been going strong for a good long while. I also love wisteria and ranunculus. Bougainvillea is just a great hardy, bright plant that makes me happy too.

  56. Love milkweed for the butterflies it brings to my yard, but I love hydrangeas. They are just so pretty.

  57. I recently bought the cutest little succulent called Echeveria. It’s like a spiky rose succulent. But oh my goodness, string of pearls may be a new favorite! If I win, I will definitely buy one.

  58. I simply adore the Burro’s Tail! Sadly I can be a killer of plants, but I am working on that!!

  71. I don’t know if I can pick one favorite. Succulents are so fun. I’ve been wanting to try string of pearls, but haven’t bought one yet!

  72. Hydrangea! I always tell my boys that and one day my four year old saw one at the grocery store and would not let my husband leave until he agreed that he could buy it for me.

  73. Burros tail! String of pearls tops my list as well! I hope to have a jungle in my house. Like a plant jungle. Hold the animals!

  74. I buy an Oxalis plant every St. Patrick’s Day. When I lived in Portland, OR my apartment had the perfect light for it and I managed to keep it alive for well over a year. A miracle for me! I usually can only keep succulents since they are drought resistant!

  80. Plants do not stand a change at my house. I have two brown thumbs. However, I love the simplicity and uniqueness of succulents!

  81. Hmmmmm….I ‘do have to say that right now I am really digging mother-in-laws tongue. Graphic. Sculptural. Oh, and it gets extra points in my book since it has a rad name!

  82. I don’t think I have a favorite plant, but lately I have been really loving the fig plant.

  83. I love orchids. They can be a bit picky but I love that about them. They just are so unique.

  89. String of pearls is my favorite indoor plant. English Daisy’s are my favorite outdoor plant right now.

  90. My fav plant (at the moment) is iris…they are in full bloom here and are so easy to care for, very hearty…and even I can’t kill them 🙂 Thank you for the opportunity.

  91. I guess I am a little bit last season, but I am still searching for the perfect fiddle leaf fig tree. They are just amazing.

  92. I have a soft spot for a golden pothos that I’ve had since I was first married. Every time I note how long the tendrils have grown compared to the tiny thing it started out as, it turns me all sappy reflecting on my marriage!

  93. I love that string of pearls plant!!!! I think my favorite are African violets! Surprisingly I can keep them alive too….if I remember/don’t get too lazy to re-pot them!

  94. My favorite plants are ferns, all kinds, but if we’re being completely honest, any plant that doesn’t die on me is my favorite!

  95. I love Rhodedendrons and Hydrangeas, but I guess my favorite potted plant is adding Kangaroo Paws (don’t know techinical name) to green plants!

  96. The ZZ palm is an absolute must in the home 🙂 Garden roses also make my heart happy!

  106. Such a fun quick project! Perfect because I am totally in the mood for making some cute and cheerful plant holders. My current FAV houseplant is the Macho Fern (and always love me some African violets). Just picked up both at the local HD! 🙂 I am so making a rift on your brass rod light fixture you made for the Nugget and making an awesome brass plant holder. We have a bunch of wooden dowels sitting around since we just finished DIYing our master bedroom closet so totally adding this to the list too!

  107. My favorite outdoor plant has to be the fuchsia. Because I do a lot of sewing, I love watching them open up. Each blossom looks like a tiny fabric flower. Inside, I like all houseplants since I’m alergic to many chemicals – they keep the air cleaner.

  108. Yes, I’m old fashioned, but I LOVE roses…finally scored with a hedge of Knock-Out roses that I’ve managed to keep alive. So…that’s my favorite OUTDOOR plant :). Indoors, give me succulents anyday! They would be lovely in this DIY!

  112. My favorite plant right now is my Elephant Ear!! It’s a large bulb and as each of the leaves “sprout” they get bigger!! So fun to watch it grow and very easy care. I just give her a drink once a week and a misty shower with a spray bottle in between. LOVE IT!!!! The only drawback is that they do require space as they are a large tropical. Living in the Southwest I’m lucky enough to have mine in a large pot on my patio.

  123. Anything I can keep alive is good! We do a lot of gardening outdoors in the summer and enjoy flowering perennials.

  124. Oh. I love your sweet little string of pearls plant and your plant hanger is so clean and natural looking, a perfect complement to a gorgeous green plant. Years ago, I had an impressive string of pearls hanging plant, I was so proud of her and she was very proud of herself! When we were moving into our current home, I heard a crash, ran upstairs and saw the remains of my pot with and her lovely pearls. I tried to nurse her back to health, but it was not to be. Yours make me remember how much I loved mine!
If I had to pick my very favorite hanging plant, It would be a difficult choice…a grape ivy or a bridal veil. I guess I might have to choose the grape ivy as the bridal veil does tend to make a mess of herself thowing her excess “lace” to the floor rather frequently. Fun post, fun giveaway.

  134. I really like a goldfish plant that has little orange blossoms on it that look like goldfish.

  135. I love all of my indoor plants. They bring colour, life and puried air into my home. From the sleekness of my snake plants to the ease and beauty of my succulents, it’s hard to choose a favourite when they all make me smile. I’ll take a plant over a bouquet of flowers any day.

And… love love loving this project. I happen to know two men who love woodworking – I’ll be asking for their assistance with this one!

  150. I kill plants too. I hear a fiddle leaf fig is hardy, so I’d like to get one

  151. I love wandering jews 😀 they have a deep purple color on the back of the leaf and sparkly silver stripes on the front. Gorgeous! I also love amaryllis for their flowers.

  152. Love this project! I’ve not been able to keep my ”string of pearls” plants alive to SAVE myself! Any words of advice? Do I need to replant into cactus-” soil”? 173. I’m in love with cactus at the moment….I’d love to try making one of those picture frames that have cactus in them to hang in my front porch…..love those string of pearls also….so fun.

  174. Fiddle Leaf Fig trees! Just bought a new home and can’t wait to purchase a few! 🙂

  175. One of my worst habits is buying a new plant every time I go to Home Depot. I am always drawn to cacti, and I am saving up to buy a very large one.

  176. I have a weak spot for Orchids. It was touch and go for a while, and due to their delicate nature I did lose a few, but I’m starting to get the hang of them, and even managed to bring a couple back to life from the brink of death 😉

  177. I have never heard of the string of pearls plant. That is pretty awesome looking. I love so many different plants. I am loving the blooms on my pomegranate tree at the moment, which doesn’t seem to produce any actual fruit.

  178. Wow! I’ve never seen string of pearls before but that looks gorgeous. My favorites are ferns and succulents.

  179. I love all kinds of plants, but I’m really missing impatiens since we haven’t been able to plant them for a couple of years.

  180. We recently bought a house with beautiful curb appeal. Now I’m learning to maintain that beauty in our hot Texas sun (although it’s a very wet spring this year!). I love flowers and am nursing some new gardenias this year, but those string of pearls look glamourous. I think I’ll try some.

  181. I love donkey tails or sometimes called burrows tail…they go great together with string of pearls because they both hang and grow crazy which I love!

  182. I love impatients in hanging baskets. It’s about the only one that I can actually keep alive!

  183. My favorite plant is anything that won’t die. BUT … with that said, I live and have had great success with orchids. Everyone thinks they are so hard to deal with, when in reality, all they want is to be left alone. The blooms are gorgeous and last for weeks. Need any other advice or helpful hints on orchids, email me. I don’t have a blog, but i love to write and talk, lol!

  184. Lately, I’ve been going through a succulent phase so I would say an Echeveria Subsessilis. Being easy to care for with a lovely shade of blue, I captures my heart as a personal favorite!
