DIY Bird Feeder (You Won’t Believe What This Is Made From!)

By Mandi 04/07/2017

Happy Earth Month!! To celebrate all things recycling and up-cycling I’ve teamed up with Aveeno to share an absolutely adorable way to reuse an empty bottle and turn it into a hanging bird feeder! The goal with up-cycling is to not make it look like you up-cycled right? I think we totally achieved our goal with this bird feeder!

I started by rinsing out my Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion bottle with warm water. If you’re just into the recycling part, remove and discard the pump (pumps aren’t recyclable) and recycle the bottle, and this is where you stop. High fives for recycling, but come on?? Where’s the fun in that?! Take off the sticker and take apart the pump, we want that cute green cap.

Gather your supplies. You’ll need:

  • A thrifted wooden bowl
  • Wooden Beads
  • 1/8″ cotton cording
  • Leather lace
  • A drill

Step 1 is to drill 3 holes in your Aveeno bottle. One on the bottom and 2 on either side of the neck.

The next step is to drill a hole in the bowl large enough for the neck of the bottle to fit inside.

Tada!!

Measure 6 feet of cotton cording and find the center point. Feed it through your beads and then through the hole that you drilled on the bottom of the bottle keeping the loop at the top.

Pull the cord through the neck of the bottle.

Thread on the green cap.

Add a bead, tie a knot, and add an additional piece of cord. This will give you more tassels at the bottom of your feeder! Add beads, leather, and anything else your creative mind wants to the ends!

Glue the leather cording around the green cap (you could also paint this if you prefer!)

Fill the bottle with birdseed.

Move everything together nice and tight and tie a knot at the top of the beads that are above the bottle.

Hang it up and enjoy! The seed will fall out of the holes, the birds will be happy, and you are helping the environment!!

I bet you’ve never been so excited to finish a bottle of lotion right!? You can snag Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion at walgreens.com/aveeno!

Huge thanks to Aveeno for pushing my creativity and teaming up with me on this fun project!!

  1. Hey! The Great Alaska Bowl Company! Made in my old stomping grounds in Fairbanks, Alaska. That’s a good thrift find; those are not cheap bowls.

      1. Just googled. Definitely should have picked a different bowl from the thrift store. ?

  2. omgosh, I have this exact lotion bottle sitting on my desk, and my kiddos have to submit a recycle project on the 17th. I am borrowing this project if you don’t mind! 🙂 Now I just have to find something to put the rest of the lotion in..

  3. I have that exact bottle, too, and I love this idea. My first thought was what a beautiful bowl and I went and looked it up, too. Wow. I will create this but find a less spectacular bowl. I’d sure use that bowl in my kitchen, though *g*. But think how rich your birds will feel! I can’t wait to try this idea.
