Happy Thursday my lovies! So, you know when you start watching Vampire Diaries and then all of a sudden its 2 days later? No? Just me?
Last week as we were chatting about the kitchen tile, I may have mentioned my most embarrassing/horrifying/take me down 15 notches on your DIY respect scale project. And that one day I will share it with you.
That day is coming.
Welp, because no one likes to be the only one drowning in a pit of judgment, and because EVERYONE loves a good laugh, I thought that it would be WAY more entertaining to show you a whole week of DIY gone wrong projects. Right? Cause lets be honest…there is a bit of a learning curve sometimes.
So.
I will tell you about mine, if you will tell me about yours. I would LOVE for you to submit stories and pictures showcasing your worst DIY fail. Like so epic you will bring shame to your children’s children.
Send me an email to vintagerevivalsblog at gmail .com with DIY Gone Wrong as the subject line and tell me all about it. Keep it as short and sweet as possible and by all means pictures are a must.
You should know that I am not above bribery, or paying out of pocket for laughs. Every project that I feature will receive a $10 Gift Card to Homegoods with one grand prize winner receiving $100.
You have until next Friday Nov. 15th to submit your failures.
Game on.
Haha, I LITERALLY just talked about this in my last post.

I wish that was my only fail.. oh but it is definitely not. I think it’s important for us to share our unsuccessful projects. It keeps things a lot more real and dissolves the “pinterest perfect” appearance in blogland.
I. Love. Vampire Diaries!
If it were possible to “like” comments, this would be the one. 🙂
I decided that I wanted to redo my living room. Trading my comfy reclining (way too bulky) leather couch and loveseat for a sleek sexy gray sectional. In the same week, I sold our entertainment console for this, also sexy, midcentury dresser. We sold our stuff and moved the new stuff in. The couch was like putting on a pair of sling back stilettos to go run in. While super fabulous, completely uncomfortable. Like, dreadfully so. And the new dresser moved in and was wobbly (couldn’t attach it to the wall because there’s a window and the outlet behind it. The dresser was so wobbly that, we immediately moved it out to the garage. Keeping my kids from being crushed by the TV apparently trumps good design. Since I had already sold our other console, it was sitting on an ugly ass desk for a few days. It’s now on a dresser that needs to go. I was uber bummed that week.
Great. Now I feel like I need to run out and create an epic fail of a project in the next week. Because, of course, I’ve never had a fail. 😉
Oh my gosh…I’m really hoping I still have pictures of the time I tried making candlesticks from baby food jars! Love this post idea Mandi!
Mine isn’t really a great story.. but I did have a total DIY fail and I still (more than a year later) haven’t fixed it yet. Since undercabinet lighting SUCKS! 😉

HA! I ALWAYS end up in a Vampire Diaries coma after I start watching! 🙂
Haha, I love this!! Sending mine in now :D. Can’t wait to read the collection!

This “assignment” is so tempting… I just can’t bring myself to public humiliation. 😉 How BIG do you want? Like the time when I thought “frosting” our bathroom window was going to save us soooo much moolah on blinds? And I’ll let you guess how that one turned out. Or how about that one time when I tried to hang some overhead storage racks in the garage but I forgot to check for studs? That one never happened as far as anyone outside of my neighborhood, family, friends circle, or the planet is concerned. No pictures were ever taken so it was all a bad nightmare, I’m sure. Maybe I could share the one epic fail about building the trellis in the garden. Ya know, the one that leaned horribly to one side and fell apart when a cat ran underneath it. I swear I don’t know how it happened! Man, I have so many… I’ll have to narrow it down to one…
I seriously doubt we haven’t all had a fail or two (or 10 or 20) under our belts! My cousin told me once ( we were water skiing) “if you never fall, you never learn anything!” I try to always look for the “learning moment” when I have a big OOPS!
I have had some seriously incredible fails. My most major fails usually involve food, but I’ve had a few (dozen) horrible DIY outcomes as well. I’ll see if I have kept pics of any of them, although I think I deleted all evidence that I’ve ever been a failure 😛
P.S. I’m so happy to hear that someone else gets lost in Vampire Diaries too. Are you watching The Originals!? If not, you must! It’s kind of like a double shot. I love it.
So shameful, that I wasn’t even completely honest in my blog post. Yeah, that bad. A year later, I am ready to come clean! The disaster post: https://anotherbigbite.com/2012/07/08/and-then-disaster-struck/
We were in the middle of two DIY gut jobs – two bathrooms that shared a wall. We were 99% done with the one bathroom, and just began the second. We were working on the plumbing in the second bathroom and a teeny leak (over the course of a week) soaked all the subflooring in BOTH bathrooms… Which meant all the tile in the almost-done bathroom started weeping water through the grout lines. OMG, it was awful! The part I never came clean about? The leak was our fault. Major facepalm.
But the best part is that we learned many valuable lessons (the hard way); we were supposed to lay concrete board under the floor tile, too – so by the time the bathrooms were done, both were done right – and we now do all our plumbing with PEX and monitor the crap out of it before we call it good. And never use white grout on a bathroom floor. No matter how great it looks. 🙂 Here’s the bathroom when it was finally done!! https://anotherbigbite.com/2012/10/17/lord-of-the-shower-curtain-rings/ (Forgive the pics; I had no idea what I was doing in the early days of blogging!)
It’s a shame that I wipe all fails clean from my memory and burn the evidence. But I’m in the middle of one right now, so maybe I’ll hang onto this one. 🙂
I have one word for you that soaks up DAYS at a time: Pinterest.
Funny Story…im actually drafting up a post right now to share this week about my biggest DIY fail yet. Lets just say it involves “clear coat” that was supposed to be “protecting” my work but instead turned yellow and ruined the paint and stencil job I spent hours doing. Oh and by the way Better Homes and Gardens was shooting said space in two days. You don’t even want to know how long it took my wife to talk me down off the bridge I wanted to jump off of. Cant wait to see all the submissions!
DIY gone wrong? Yup, been there. Lots!
