Ok so go with me on this one. You know how there are those people who seem to roll out of bed perfectly rested, sit up with the sun streaming through the windows, gracefully yawn and dont have morning breath? I feel like maybe that is how ya’ll are seeing this room design. When in all actuality it was more like sitting STRAIGHT up in bed and yelling your favorite swear because you have overslept, still wearing your clothes from last night, and rocking bed head that will not quit.
I wish I could say that this was the original plan for Dylan’s room.
But that would be big fat lying.
The original room had much less of Dylan’s sparkle in it.
I worked like a mad woman to have this project completed and it seemed like everywhere I turned or everything I did was just wrong.
When I got to this point it just felt so old and boring. Old as in mature. Like a grandma. And not the hip kind.
Do you gut check your progress on a project? I have a specific method of gut checking. I walk away without looking at it and then turn around with my eyes closed. When I open them I either get a super excited feeling (when I am headed in the right direction) or I get a sinking feeling because I just dont love it. Funny thing about it is even when the gut check isnt working for me, sometimes I have to still go through with the plan, just to make sure. (Like the Faux Bois floor)
I loved the idea of a light pink and orange red together. I loved the hex wall. I loved the gold frame on the bed. But it just wasnt right together.
So it had to be changed. So as the tutorials start rolling in, please remember that what it may look like in the picture is not how it always appears in the final shot.
Especially when it comes to the Hex Wall. The tutorial for that thing is all jacked up. So please bear with me a couple more days while I iron out the process (since it changed about 1/2 way through!)
Speaking of waking up gorgeous. I have to introduce you to the newest member of our family.
Meet Wallace.
Though he looks ginorm in this picture he is actually the teeniest thing that you have ever seen. The last week of our lives have been consumed with puppy training and snuggles and it is fantastic.
Welcome Wallace 🙂 I have a B/T named Winston. They are the best dogs, very loyal and smart. And they snore so cute. You are blessed to have this new family member.
OH MY WORD THAT IS THE CUTEST LITTLE BOSTON EVER!
We have two Bostons, Axel (black male) and Stella (brown female) which we love to bits! They’re the funnest little dogs ever! If you have any Boston questions, feel free to ask! vlazurko[at]hotmail[dot]com
Our Axel has major allergy issues (apparently common in Bostons, too), so I’m a resident expert on the topic!
Mandi, Mandi, Mandi … version 2 of Dylan’s room is stunning. Liked v1 but it does pale in comparison. Definitely appreciate your drive and commitment to getting it right. Love that you admit you sometimes falter along the way.
And Welcome to Mr. Wallace 🙂
As a DIYer myself all I can do is look at the orange on the inside of the hexes in the first room and think what a nightmare it must have been to get it all off! The final room looks amazing though, so it was the right move!
oh i agree!!! what a pain to paint all that!
I didn’t notice that it wasn’t in the final shot. What a huge pain in the butt to paint over!
u are so humble!!! all your awesome room make overs look perfect, bright, clean, eccletic, vintage-ey, and colorful. i imagine it falls into place sorta like the 30 min tv shows on hgtv! lol but i know better! bc that never happens- even on those shows there is editing, gazillion dollar budgets, people running errands for you and someone feeding your children, i.e. real life!!! but tv does that to us even when we are aware of it. i really enjoy watching the progress and evolution of the rooms, it helps me learn what looks good and where things can improve and also that we dont always get it right the first or even second time. but we gotta keep pushing! sometimes with all we have left! so thank you for letting us watch your journey!
I am so glad you stuck with it! Because the finished product is jaw dropping incredible!!! And thanks for helping us see that it isn’t always easy and doesn’t always go as planned, and we should just keep plugging away at it because sometimes the end result is even better than what was “planned” anyway!I can’t wait to hear about the nightmare it must have been redoing that hex wall! I am sure there are a ton of us that will be forever grateful that we are able to “learn from your mistakes” so to speak and just do it like you did the second time where it looks absolutely brilliant!!!
BT lovers unite! (We have two.) You won’t regret the hard work puppy training when Wallace grows into a charming, well-behaved dog! But man, puppy potty training is the WORST. They’re like babies, but the DON’T WEAR DIAPERS, and they are extremely MOBILE. Good thing they’re cute!
oh my goooodness, i want to snuggle that little puppy butt. sooo cute! and love hearing design-wise you don’t have it all planned out from the get-go. makes me feel better since i’m always changing my mind midway through things as well.

Wallace seems happy with the results! And he doesn’t even have bed head!

Awww…. Wallace is adorable! I want to see more of him!!
I do the same turning around with my eyes shut thing when I need to check if I love something! I adore this room by the way so obviously your gut check worked!

Know what would make me love you even more? If you started posting a “real life” pic after you posted the awesome beautifully staged pictures of your makeovers and projects. Like, if you just walked into her room right now, no picking up or primping, and took a picture… dirty undies and all, jk jk go ahead and throw those in the hamper! lol Just to remind all of us that live in the real world, not the make believe world that is “blogland” what your reality truly is. I think that would be so refreshing and would make you that much more authentic and different from the pack. Her room is insane btw. 😉

Wow this room is amazing!!! 😀
Well, I love love love that honeycomb wall…especially with all the color added….but Oh…what a wonderful puppy you have. NOthing better than a new puppy in the house.
Well I’m sure your new puppy and you will figure out a way cool design… he looks like he’s dreaming about some new cool colors or something! Good luck!!
You know.. it really is refreshing to read this post. I had to redo my entire master {which isn’t finished} because the first go around fell totally flat.
I have to re-do the mud-room, too. It’s always left me with a hollow pit in my stomach!
Thank you for sharing how you went through this!
That room is going to look gorgeous I’m sure – whatever you do to it!
Love Bostons! They are busy, busy, busy! 🙂 Our BT is always ready to play. ALWAYS. 🙂 I love her, she is MY dog. Enjoy and post tons of pictures of Wallace! I love the day when their ears are no longer floppy. So cute!
One of my 4 granddogs is a BT. His name is Baxter and he is super intelligent! Your puppy looks totally adorable…how can you not just sit and hold him all the time? 🙂
Love all the color! Whatever you went through, the end result is superb!
xo
Pat
oh wow, that lamp, that ottoman and THAT POM POM BLANKET! Details please!
Your end result is a wow!! Great intuition!
Wow great post! You made my day by sharing such a fabulous blog. 🙂 europeblog.eu
Your posts always make me smile! I love seeing your creative process and knowing I’m not the only one who changes midway through a project!!
If I had to choose between that room and that puppy… well I would choose the puppy of course, but the room is a close second.
