Happy Monday!! I thought it would be fun to take out my crystal-ish ball and take a peek into the future of home decor trends for 2014!
Ultra White Walls. With design becoming so mainstream and accessible because of pinterest and blogs, people are empowered to try new things and take risks. Where risk goes, colors tend to follow. Nothing is a better canvas for a collected style than white walls. White walls give you freedom. They aren’t trying to be the star, they get that the crazy thrifted dresser needs to be the star and they are good with it. I think that even more people are going to be moving away from beige and gray.
Hexagons are here to stayβ¦at least for another year. When I did Dylanβs room (pictured below) last year, hexagons were few and far between, but they are popping up everywhere. I don’t think that people are over them yet, I know I’m not!
More geometrics. On everything, in every style, just everywhere. Loving this simple string art on La La Lovely.
And of course, we cant forget Himmeli! See the tutorial for this Geometric Wreath here!
I think that there is going to be a greater resurgence of 70βs boho vibe. Wicker, big hanging plants, and my personal favoriteβ¦.MacramΓ©! Donβt be scared my friends, it is going to be so fun! Love this MacramΓ© wall hanging over on A Beautiful Mess.
Pantoneβs Color of the Year is Radiant Orchid. I am still on the fence. I actually like the vibrant color a lot (it is the color of this rug that I bought last year) in small doses. But I think I must have had a traumatic childhood design moment with a purple and black room, because it just keeps haunting me. It is, however, one of my internal mottos to try things at least once. So we will see where Radiant Orchid pops her vibrant little head up. I can pretty much guarantee that it wont be a full wall. Maybe a cute piece of furniture.
Copper is the heavy metal rockstar for 2014. Brass is still so in, but copper is going to become way more mainstream this year. Check your hardware store for rigid copper tubing for building, or your local craft store for copper spray paint or copper leafing.

So spill what does your glass ball say?
I’m still down with hexagons. The other day I picked up a ombre hexagon curtain panel at Goodwill. I plan to turn it into pillow covers to really bring together all the vintage-meets-modern colors throughout my living room.
XO,
Steph

Hi Mandi! Great predictions. Geometric shapes are one of my favorites. I definetly hope this trend continues throughout ’14. I think bold-saturated colors (esp. jewel tones) are also making a comeback! Happy Monday!

Mixing it all up! Mixing metallics. Mixing wood tones. Mixing fabrics. AND shades of blue. I’m already over the “color of the year.” Move over purple, it’s all about the blues for this girl!
I love reading house beautiful! Here’s a good read for ya:

I agree with blues!!! Especially jewel toned blues! Love it!
I’m all over the white walls trend! I agree that we’ll be seeing more ’70s boho decor, lots more. Good predictions : ]
I think white walls are great but I don’t think I would do my whole house white. I painted my kitchen vintage teal and love it! I like the mixing metals look.
Love the idea of copper. I’ve completely redid my living room with copper accents. LOVE IT!
Totally agree about geometrics and more white!!
I totally know hoe to macrame. Old school skill my sister taught me when I was 10.
So with you on the predictions and I love the macramΓ© wall hanging.
I have been craving color so much!
One trend I’ve been into and think will only grow in 2014 is tone on tone. I’m in love with decor that has several different shades of the same color. Fun list!
I completely agree Gwen! xo
I also totally agree on this one!
Why did you put your watermark over A Beautiful Mess’s copper pipe macrame image?
It auto watermarks my images when I write my posts! Thanks for the heads up, I will get it changed! xo
I am excited to work in some pops of radiant orchid, although I agree it would be a bit much for a whole room. I’ll have to keep my eye out for copper accents as well. Great post!
Pineapples and Flamingos!
Emma, do you read Studio DIY? Kelly is the QUEEN of pineapples and she is adorable!

Wow! Thanks for the tip! She is amazing! Another incredible blog to add to the list! thanks Mandi!!
I’m going to chime in and say that I think Kilim Rugs are going to be EVERYWHERE! I super love the one Ashley has at The Handmade Home. Also, my man-child Nick predicted several years ago that copper appliances would be the new stainless steel. I’m thinking that might actually come true… HA! π
How funny! I just made a tiny macrame hanger for an air plant this morning. While I do agree with most of your post, I’m not digging the white walls. Maybe it’s because we have to rent all the time (military) and I just have colored wall envy. Who knows. All I know is I am tired of staring at my boring white walls! However, I do love the white paneled walls that were pretty popular for a whileβ¦gives the eye a lot more to look at even though it’s all white.
I think a big trend will be more eclectic decorating in general. With the popularity of Home Bloggers, Pinterest, and designers like Emily Henderson, people are going to start feeling the courage to go away from big box store “sets”.
I am so down with white and color in 2014! I think shapes and patterns are going to rock walls, halls and furniture in ways that will surprise and dazzle. I also think we will be seeing an influx of out-of-the box lighting! I look forward to trying it all! π
Oh and did I mention lacquered furniture in all colors? Wahoo!
I think that the trend should be to just do what you like. But if you want to see what could be coming, Maria Killam has a good list!

Great list. I hope hexagons are here to stay… and copper too. But, keep your hands off my thrifted macrame! π Lol. It’s always hard when something you love becomes popular. On one hand there are lots more listings on sites like etsy – but at the same time things get so much more expensive.
I’m totally with you on the copper! I bought 3 vintage copper tea kettles back in March. Still not sure what to do with all of them, but I couldn’t resist! And I know radiant orchid is the color of the year, but I see a lot more blue and moody hues on the horizon.
Hmmm interesting list Mandy. I thing you’re pretty on. I predicted lilac to be huge this year way before Pantone announced it so I was extra excited to see it pop up as the color of the year. As much as I hate it I think your dead on with the white walls. They are EVERYWHERE!! I just CANT get with it though. I hate white walls. Always have, always will.:) I so agree with you on copper, too. One design trend I think, and really hope we see more of is light wood floors. I love love love them. Never been a big fan of dark wood and I think that people are now starting to realize how much maintenance they are. I think along the lines of what you said about the white walls, light wood floors offer such a fresh clean option and totally allows for easier mixing of different colors and wood tones in furniture. And though we’ve seen it start to happen in years past, I think, and again hope, to see kitchens sans upper cabinets. They are just so restricting in my opinion. I think people are going to start to rethink storage and different ways you can achieve the same function without upper cabinets.
Love this Mandi. My favorite – the copper. I actually put the combination of sapphire & copper on my “If I ruled the design world” list of trends, so I hope you are right on. Love it! π I just posted a few of my own predictions today. Animals. White. Geometric patterns. Organization.
I LOVE the 70’s boho vibe. That is so my style π And love all of your predictions here!
I think you’re spot on with these predictions. We’ve moved on from chevron to hexagons and other shapes.
Geometry continues to haunt me way past high school π
It’s funny; I’ve always liked that orchid color but never really had a name for it (other than “pink-ish”) until I worked at a nursing home a few years ago, and heard some of residents using the term. (As in, “I love that orchid blouse she’s wearing!”) Elderly ladies are so ahead of the trends! π I’m totally on board with the orchid and the boho stuff, not so much the white walls.
I predict wallpaper making a comeback, but not permanently adhered to full walls. More like panels of it as headboards, or as backing for shelves.
The swants trend is going to continue, so I see that moving into decor… more nordic/swedish/euro vibes. And florals.
What an inspiring post, gets me exciting to get decorating again!
My crystal ball tells me I’m going to be accidentally very on trend! A much too pale grey paint has turned my spare bedroom into a fresh white space. Revising my “vision” for the room (decorate as much as you can, as fast as you can before your sister in law visits for a month), I have finally a chance to break into my hoard of West African fabric and add some wonderdul pops of colour.
Last happy design coincidence- have knocked up a DIY tripod copper table lamp. It’s the most on trend interior I’ve had since a purple chalk paint bedroom in the mid 90s!
Anybody know where to find rugs/killim similar to the first pic? Love the range of color in that one!
70’s everything YES. I just inherited a couple of wicker & copper pieces from my grandmother at the end of the year, and my darling sister gave me a super beautiful 70’s lead glass pendant lamp for ma birthday. I am l<3ving this era.
And I love your blog! -Kailey
