By Mandi | 12/19/2016 | 66 Comments

Hey guys!! Man am I excited to finally share Aspyn’s Living Room and Entryway makeover with you!!

If you’re new to the block, welcome! For the last little while I’ve been working on a space makeover for youtuber Aspyn Ovard. She lives in the same smallish town that I do and it was a really exciting challenge to update her builder grade space into something totally her. This is what it looked like before:

This is what it looks like now:

The jumping off point was the couch, her request was something pink and the Emil from Article was absolutely perfect (and its a killer price point!!) When you’re decorating with a show stopping couch (especially if its an exciting color) you have to remember that its the star of the show. Everything else is wonderful and amazing, but not the star of the show. Also, every time I say star of the show I think of Wild Hearts Cant Be Broken.

SIDENOTE: HAVE YOU ENTERED THE GIVEAWAY FOR A COUCH OF YOUR CHOICE FROM ARTICLE?!! Get the details here!!

Article.

If you love high quality on trend furniture (especially upholstery!) at a really great price point Article is your dream store. Every person in my life who even remotely brought up the topic of furniture has received the Article sermon. I am a BELIEVER!!!

Our journey started out when I was hunting for a couch for Aspyn’s house. I really wanted to do something a little outside of the norm and decided a pink couch would be magical. I mean, you guys know I love a good statement couch.

And look at these:

House Saga Part 4: Finances + Reality

By Mandi | 12/12/2016 | 32 Comments

If you need to get caught up you can do that here!

Where did I leave off? Oh yes, the elevation! It was so cool to finally be able to see what the outside of our house looked like! We went back and forth for a while ironing out the details of the exterior and making sure that everything in the floorpan was exactly what we wanted.

This house was my inspiration. I loved the colors, the wood details and the knee brackets.

One of the most eye opening things was that people do things like have beige houses for a reason. Living in such a harsh climate, things that I love (cedar shake I’m looking at you) just aren’t practical, or require serious maintenance. I would love a fair amount of stucco in the world to die, but it can’t. Cause cement board is 3x as much.

I think there is this thing that happens when you’re building a house that I didn’t realize was a thing until we got to this point. You have your non negotiable right? And then you have the things that you really really want. And you think that its ok to put a little extra money into things cause you can pull it from somewhere else, right?

Getting bids back showed me that there aren’t really that many places that you can pull from. I don’t know about you guys but I want to splurge on the things that I can see, and cut out the things that I can’t. Well the things that you can’t see sort of can’t be cut out. I can’t be the only one that experiences this phenomenon right?!

Another huge wheel that was in motion at this point (that I haven’t brought up yet) was our financing. If you are uncomfortable with money talk, feel free to scroll past this part!

Aspyn’s Dining Room Makeover REVEAL!

By Mandi | 12/08/2016 | 30 Comments

You guys! I’m so excited to share this fun dining room makeover with you!! Before you keep scrolling I want you to close your eyes (I mean, not really ‘cause you have to read, but pretend to close your eyes.)

Picture Home Depot (just go with me on this). Picture all of the things that Home Depot is known for. Now buckle your seatbelt ‘cause you’re about to be blown away.

I’ve had the pleasure of teaming up with Youtube darling Aspyn Ovard for a complete overhaul of her house.

When we started out with not a lot. If you remember, her house is a new build and you could tell. In other words it was very basic and very empty. Her style is young, fresh, and a little mixed bohemian. I wanted the space to feel clean, eclectic, nothing super structured, formal, or traditional. Full of life, yet still calm. Tall order? Maybe.

By Mandi | 12/06/2016 | 2 Comments

Guys, can we just talk for a second about my favorite kind of Christmas gifts? The sentimental, family photo, best memories kind? Remember how our annual family christmas picture is quite literally the greatest moment of the year? In our house, photo gifts rule the world and I’m so excited to share my latest obsession, Pinhole Press.

They make THE BEST photo gifts for the cute kiddies in your life, they have so many cute things but my absolute favorite is the Names & Faces puzzle game.

Building My Dream House + Plans: Part 3

By Mandi | 11/30/2016 | 15 Comments

Hey guys!! Ready to dive into this house selling/buying/building saga a little bit more?!

We last left off at the end of March with a rough first draft floor plan from the architect. I was wildly obsessed with the idea of doing a pitched roof/loft style master so the story and 1/2 maximum requirement in the CC&R’s at Stucki Farms were sort of perfect.

Sidetone: For those that are unfamiliar let me explain it just a little bit more. A story is considered where the plate line is. So if your house has 10 foot ceilings, you’ll have a 10 foot plate line which means if there is a second level to the house its roughly 1/2 of that height.

If we’re diving into the plans that he originally sent over, I LOVE LOVE LOVED the Hearth Room off of the kitchen. I love the angle, I love the space, I love the vaulted ceiling, LOVE IT ALL. The biggest problem was that we needed another bedroom added. This is the original plan:

WHAT'S HAPPENING IN WALDO

How To Install A Steel Roof For $300 & Enslave Your Family In The Process

By Mandi | 11/30/2016 | 13 Comments

What's Happening In Waldo Sarah here!! For those who tuned in to our last What’s Happening in Waldo post, you’ll remember that I’ve been laid up for almost two months solid. We established that it was the worst (although sweatpants being socially acceptable wasn’t half bad) and that I had insane guilt, for not being able to partake in the crazy-grueling schedule that is running your own business AND remodeling a home while living in it. That schnoodles is bananas yo. So this time I want to tell the harrowing tale of how we located, bought and installed a reclaimed steel roof for $300 and enslaved my father-in-law in the process. Note: no family members were harmed (more than band-aid level) in the making of this post. Freezing and exhaustion, that’s a different story — so here’s how it went!
