Geometric Himmeli Wreath 2.0

By Mandi | 01/17/2014 | 39 Comments

I have had SO many requests for this tutorial, I hope that you guys love it!

How to make a Modern Geometric Himmeli Wreath vintagerevivals

This design is a little more complicated than the first geometric himmeli wreath, and as I was shooting the pictures, there was just so much in the pictures, it was pretty confusing. So I decided to only do this tutorial in video form (this is totally new for me!)

I also feel like I need to preface it by saying that the end is a little dark (it is so much easier to shoot during the summer, when it stays light until 9:00!)

Let me know if you have any questions, and make sure that if you recreate this or any other Vintage Revivals project that you hashtag it on Instagram with #myvintagerevivals so that I can see it (and possibly feature it!)

It’s that time again my friends! Time to be completely awestruck with the amazing furniture finds of our fellow readers! Remember if you have a piece that you love so much it can only be pried from your Cold Dead Fingers hashtag #colddeadfingers on Instagram and you might be in the next edition!

There are SO many great pieces,  I think I need to do a Cold Dead Fingers post every week for the rest of my life to cover them.

The first piece is an awesome dresser from owlkillstudio. I am obsessed.

Our new (free!) sofa is finally staying with us at our house. It is amazing quality, just needs a little reupholstery love. I am #obsessed with it and its potential. #wouldmarryitificould  #thankscraigslist #interiordesignstudentonaroll

I wish I could come up with some cute remark about this amazing campaigner. I cant. I am too jealous.

Went to Goodwill in search of a system to corral my son’s toys. And this gem was just sitting there. $25, some touch up paint, and a whole lotta Lysol + elbow grease later, we have a new toy chest! [AND let it be known that I unloaded from the truck + carried/slid this sucker up a flight of stairs by myself.]  #impatient

I would have SO picked this skull up from Homegoods. Great find lady!

If there are 2 things in this world I love right now it is gold and geometric anything. This lamp is what dreams are made of. (For those of us not lucky enough to score something this amazing at Goodwill,  Nate Berkus for Target has one that is similar here)!

I owe the East Brunswick Goodwill and apology. Today I was leaving to drop off some donations and referred to it as the “Badwill” because it never has cool stuff. Then I found this dope lamp for $6.99. Now I will be calling the store “Dopewill”. #colddeadfingers  #goodwill #brass #lamp #januarycure

And last but not least, there was no way that I was not going to share this AWESOME picture from Enie. Girl, your Mother In Law wins the internet today (and your Mid Century record cabinet is fantastic too…)

My mother-in-law is one hard rockin lady. Here she is doing a dance off with my brother-in-law at her birthday bash in our old living room. Did I mention that I’m homesick? I miss everything about this picture! (Yes, that’s the record cabinet Don Draper had in his last office. And yes, we had to leave it behind when we came back to Europe. And yes, I shouldn’t care about “stuff” but I do get easily attached to my vintage treasures.) #colddeadfingers

Thanks to everyone that let me share their Cold Dead Fingers pieces today! MUAH!

Check out the other Cold Dead Fingers posts here!

Make sure to hashtag your favorite finds so we can all be SUPER jealous too! #colddeadfingers

Oh Man, We’re Planning A Wedding!

By Mandi | 01/15/2014 | 90 Comments

Hello my loves!  I feel like this week is full of awesome announcements,  I love when exciting things are happening!!  In the State of the Blog,  so many of you wanted to know more about my family and the behind the scenes things of my life.  I thought it would be fun to loop you in on the big project that is happening right now!

My gorgeous sister Miranda is getting married!!!  She has been dating her fiancée Rob for the last 8 years and they are finally settling down and we could no be more excited about it!

IMG_5391

Planning a wedding is not something that I have ever done (not even my own) so we are in for a special treat!

They are getting married in the Draper Temple (you can find out what that means here) and have opted to have a small luncheon instead of a reception.

The vibe that she wants is sort of a romantic modern with a little vintage.  Which fits her perfectly!

This is what we know so far:

They are looking at a few locations but would really love an industrial loft space.

All of the bridesmaids are going to be wearing Blush, and all of the groomsmen are wearing Taupe.

Miranda wants a lot of copper and gold metallics.  But the main color is going to be white.

For flowers we are using succulents and Babies Breath.  I love this picture on 100 Layer Cake.

Elegant New Orleans wedding

Thats about it.

I am going to be DIYing all of the decor,  so keep your fingers crossed for me!

The best news is that you wont have to wait too long to see it,  they are getting married on March 28th!  Time to kick it into high gear, are you nervous for us?

One problem that we are running into is that I am 4 hours away and long distance planning is a little hard.  I thought that maybe you could help me?  If you know of any photographers, florists, loft spaces,  cake decorators, basically anyone that does anything involved with a wedding,  we neeeeeed you!!  They must be in Salt Lake, and they must be amazing!  (You can leave a link to their website in the comments if you want to share!)

The other thing that I am a little nervous about is that I have never planned a wedding!!  So I need all the advice that you can give me!  What did you do right and wrong?  Lessons learned?

Dudes.  This newsletter is something that I have wanted to do FOREVER.  But it was just not something that I had the time or energy to take on.  Good news.  I figured out a way to do it!!  My right hand girl Jamie is helping make it happen and I am happy dance excited about it.

When I switched to WordPress I lost quite a few subscribers in the transaction.  Which makes me so sad.  Having a newsletter is going to be my security blanket.

Now, lets be honest,  I know that you dont need another spammy thing in your inbox.  But hear me out on this one.  The Vintage Revivals newsletter is amazing!!

Want to know what you can expect?

It will be sent out every Friday night/ Saturday morning. (Except edition #1,  that will come out when you sign up!)

Inside every issue will be:

Links to the posts from the week (in case you missed one!)  There will be a picture and a short blurb so you know what you are in for!

A sneak peek of a project/post coming next week.

Any info on giveaways that are happening at the moment.

I will also be sharing your Rock What Ya Got projects from the linky that will go live the 3rd Monday of every month and the #rockwhatyagotparty hashtag on Instagram.

And last but not least, you guys gave me about 1500 responses to the question, if you could ask me anything what would it be?  So I will be answering 1 or 2 of those each newsletter.

I also reserve the right to add anything that is especially amazing/hilarious that happened during the week.  You know, just for fun.

Its like a party in your inbox!!

Rock What Ya Got: Upcycled Copper Wire Pendant Lights (from ugly lampshades!)

By Mandi | 01/09/2014 | 90 Comments

When I got home from Home Depot a few days ago,  Court was cleaning out the garage. I am obviously a hoarder of amazing things that look like garbage. He doesnt have the vision and frequently throws away treasures. You can image what this does to me.

I flew out of my car and was like “What are you throwing away?! I need it alllllllllllll!! (and possibly an intervention) Court held up a few ugly lampshades that would not work for anyone. ever. to try and prove the point that not everything is worth saving.

Unfortunately for him my best ideas are spontaneous. Bring it. Oh it has been brought-en.

I LOVE a good lamp. The subsequent reality of the situation is that I have about a million ugly lampshades. Every time I look at them I die a little inside. I know they could be something amazing, so I hang onto them, but lets be honest, they are not shooting to the top of anyone’s must do list.

Simple DIY Copper Wire Pendant Lights vintagerevivals

That is, until today.

All you need to make these eye popping lights, is an ugly lampshade with a wire frame inside and a few simple supplies. (I posted a picture of the shade on the right on Instagram yesterday and it became immediately clear how much better filters make everything look. It didn’t look half bad, but IRL it is granny…and not in a cool hipster way. In a mother-of-the-bride dress sheathing kind of way.)  Sorry to fool you guys with my mad filtering skillz.

Ugly Lampshade Upcycle Ideas vintagerevivals

Lets get started!

Cut off all of the fabric and pull off all of the glued on bits until you are left with this:

How to make a Skeleton (wire) Lampshade

Its is the skeleton of the lampshade! Get it? Skeleton shade?!

I gave my lamp bones a coat of Krylon Copper Spray Paint.

Copper Wire Lampshade

Then I used some lamp wire I had from another project and wired a basic socket on the inside of the lampshade. To do this you will need:

Supplies for a hanging light fixture

(1) Pull String Light Socket ($3.49) at Home Depot

(1) 1/2” threaded nipple

(1) Washer

(1) Hex Nut

The desired length of Lamp Wire.

* If you are spray painting your socket do it before you move on to the next step!

Start by threading on your cord the hex nut and the washer. Feed the cord through the top of the lampshade.

Wiring a Hanging Lampshade vintagerevivals.com

Then thread your cord through the nipple and the base of your socket.

How To Build A Hanging Lamp

This next step is super important so pay attention! The weight of the skeleton shade is going to be on the socket. Normally you would buy a special tension socket for this, but because our shades are so light we are going to use  everyone’s favorite DIY Fix All…Hot Glue!

Tie a knot in your wire and fill it nice and full with hot glue. I like to pull the wire up while I am doing this to make sure that it is inside the nipple too. This is going to take the pressure off of the actual wiring and move it to the entire socket. Also please make sure that you leave enough cord that you can still wire your socket!

Wiring a light socket for a hanging lamp

Once it is wired push the 2 pieces together REALLY hard. You will hear a soft pop when it is connected.

Copper Light Socket

Then just stick the nipple into the top of the shade and attach the hex nut.

How To Hang a Lampshade From the Ceiling vintagerevivals

That’s it. Not even 10 minutes later we have these fun and unique light fixtures.

Hanging Wire Lampshade Tutorial vintagerevivals.com

And you can get as creative as you want. I had a lot of extra cord so I tied it up and let the socket hang on this light. It breaks up the monotony a little.

I win. Sorry Court.

UPDATE! The light bulbs that I used can be found at Home Depot and Lowes. They are not going to be available once the supplies sell out (because the US is no longer producing or importing filament bulbs) So get them while you can!

I have also had a few questions about where they plug in. I pulled the cords out of the picture, but they run down the wall and plug in behind the couch. They look really cute like that (because of the sweet cords).

Now to the fun part that involves YOU! Whenever I bring a new treasure home Court just looks at me and says “Where are you going to put that?” And then I happily float into the garage and add it to the treasures that are taking up my half. (Ok it is more like two thirds. But who is measuring?)

The problem in this situation is that I have treasures that I have long forgotten about. And who can forget the ever present “But I cant get rid of that, I might use it!” excuse?

So here is what we are going to do. It is a fun thing I like to call MOTIVATION! Once a month we are going to have a Rock What Ya Got party. You can play along on Vintage Revivals by linking up a blog post,  or on instagram using the #rockwhatyagotparty hashtag.

Here is the other deal. This link up is for new projects only. I get it,  you are excited about that dresser that you painted last June and still want everyone to see it. But this is not that. We are doing NEW projects. New. Like sparkly newborn baby new. Yes? The whole point is to do something new. How about if I throw one more NEW in there for effect? New.

So here are a few things you need to know about our fun new club:

The Rock What Ya Got party will be opening the 3rd Monday of every month and will be open for one week.

Feel free to link up any type of project, as long as it is using something that you already had at home. (You can obviously buy a few supplies to work your magic)  The project has to be (say it with me!) NEW!

I will be sharing some of my favorites every month on my social media channels and in the Vintage Revivals newsletter!

If you have any fun fight for the garbage stories, I want to hear all about them!!

Pinterest and The Pacman Problem

By Mandi | 01/08/2014 | 163 Comments

* This is a really long post, so it will be truncated about 1/2 way down! xo

I am feeling a little bit of apprehension about writing this post. I feel like I might be walking into a lion’s den wearing a Lady Gaga meat suit. People are fiercely protective of their pins. But me and a few of my blogging besties have noticed things changing with the great P and so I asked in the State of the Blog survey how you were feeling about it. Please remember that these are just my feelings about it,  and you might think I am totally wrong. That is ok! Everyone is free to share their thoughts in the comments below!

Pinterest and the Pacman Problem

The responses are out of this world amazing. You guys have so much great insight into what is going on!

So let me tell you how I am feeling about the whole situation. Granted this isn’t just a Pinterest problem, but I think that it is totally compounded by Pinterest. As technology gets faster, and the wait time for gratification is becoming shorter we are becoming greater consumers. Not consumers like the purchasing type (though that has increased too) a consumer like PacMan. Everything has a shorter life span, because we want something different and new and exciting. Always consuming, always on the move. Almost without thought.

When you are connected with what more than 70 million people think is cool, it loses its sparkle a lot faster.

I think that we have an inherent need to be individuals and the more people jump on an idea, the less individualized we feel. Perfection makes us less of an individual.

We have become inspiration addicts. We love the feeling of having our mind blown and seeing just what is possible. But like any good drug, finding our fix in outside sources leaves us feeling empty and like we are not good enough.

I have a love/hate relationship with Pinterest.

I feel like screaming STOP THE MADNESS every time I get on there.

So why do I hate Pinterest? Not because it isn’t a great tool, but because it becomes so simple to think like a minion. I get on and all of a sudden, I need an all white kitchen that I home school my kids in, while prepping a month’s worth of gluten free Crockpot dinners for under $18, and doing 50 lunges, 65 sit ups, 74 jumping jacks (you get where this is going) for the perfect bikini ready butt that will go SO perfectly with my sock bun.

To me Pinterest has the power to be exhausting, overwhelming, and a creativity killer. It is so easy to forget what you like when you are surrounded by gorgeous images of what everyone else likes. It is the ultimate form of adult peer pressure.

I hate that Pinterest takes all of the credit away from the people that actually create the content. How many times has this happened to YOU? You hang an amazing piece of art up and your neighbor walks in and says “Oh did you get that from Pinterest?”

Truth.

It is extremely easy to get caught up in the comparison game and Pinterest facilitates the game by showing you the best of the best. You don’t see anything but the money shot as you sit with a house with Cheerios mashed into the carpet. It can be really disheartening.

But.

Home Decor Trend Predictions 2014

By Mandi | 01/06/2014 | 41 Comments

Happy Monday!!  I thought it would be fun to take out my crystal-ish ball and take a peek into the future of home decor trends for 2014!

Home Decor Trends 2014

Ultra White Walls.  With design becoming so mainstream and accessible because of pinterest and blogs, people are empowered to try new things and take risks.  Where risk goes, colors tend to follow.  Nothing is a better canvas for a collected style than white walls.  White walls give you freedom.  They aren’t trying to be the star,  they get that the crazy thrifted dresser needs to be the star and they are good with it.  I think that even more people are going to be moving away from beige and gray.

Source

Hexagons are here to stay…at least for another year.   When I did Dylan’s room (pictured below) last year, hexagons were few and far between,  but they are popping up everywhere.  I don’t think that people are over them yet,  I know I’m not!

More geometrics.  On everything, in every style,  just everywhere.  Loving this simple string art on La La Lovely.

And of course, we cant forget Himmeli!  See the tutorial for this Geometric Wreath here!

I think that there is going to be a greater resurgence of 70’s boho vibe.  Wicker, big hanging plants, and my personal favorite….Macramé!   Don’t be scared my friends, it is going to be so fun!  Love this Macramé wall hanging over on A Beautiful Mess.

Macrame Wall Art

Pantone’s Color of the Year is Radiant Orchid.  I am still on the fence.  I actually like the vibrant color a lot (it is the color of this rug that I bought last year) in small doses.   But I think I must have had a traumatic childhood design moment with a purple and black room, because it just keeps haunting me.  It is, however, one of my internal mottos to try things at least once.  So we will see where Radiant Orchid pops her vibrant little head up.  I can pretty much guarantee that it wont be a full wall.  Maybe a cute piece of furniture.

Leather Scrap Triangle Pillow Tutorial vintagerevivals.com

Copper is the heavy metal rockstar for 2014.  Brass is still so in,  but copper is going to become way more mainstream this year.  Check your hardware store for rigid copper tubing for building, or your local craft store for copper spray paint or copper leafing.
