The following image requires no explanation other than Dylan was VERY excited to go to Salt Lake to see her Grandma and Papa. So excited in fact that she drew life size portraits of them on the wall with permanent marker.

Dylan Drawings

How is your week going?

  1. Haha…this looks like my house(EVERY wall in my house) glad I’m not the only one. I like to think my little guy will be an artist someday 🙂 And now that I found your blog I have plenty of awesome ideas for repainting!

  2. Okay, I may be in the minority, but I loved when my daughter would paste drawings directly to the wall (She’s now 12, and I still have a heart with a “I heart Mum” pasted to the dining room wall that she did when she was 3!) and draw and left them as reminders of her childhood. I think these are fab and would make a frame for them! Although otoh its not something you want to encourage… XXX Suzanne

  3. What is it that makes some kids need that larger, permanent canvas? I have one that is constantly going after the walls and one whom it would never occur to.

  4. Hey…they are pretty cool looking 🙂 My daughter decided to use the inside of our car as a canvas with black permanant marker last month…still trying to get it all out of the upholstery…kids are great that way :/

  5. Rubbing alcohol usually works great! My neighbor swears by hairspray. Spray and leave for 30 seconds, then rub lightly with dampened SOS pad, or Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. Good luck!

  6. Those are awesome! Could you DIY a frame around them? Hand sanitizer and baby wipes also work on things like that. If you put a sofa in front of them, it will look like they are playing hide and seek! Good luck!

  7. This is why i’ve never blogged my daughters’ bedroom. I was nearly finished when my-then-3-year-old redecorated all of the freshly painted walls and furniture. Some of it came off, but really, it won’t look good until I repaint, and I wasn’t ready to repaint. Not until I’m SURE she is past this phase and I won’t have to do it again.

    But…at least they are artistic.

  8. Instead of drawing just one {or two} pictures, my nephew took a marker and walked around the entire perimeter of the upstairs while writing on the wall. Twice. There were two black stripes two feet off of the floor in every room. He’s lucky to still be alive. 🙂

  9. Mandy I would leave those pictures right where they are and build a little frame around them! You could also trace them onto big paper and give them to the grandparents! That is so precious!
Think of it as your lucky week!

  10. Mandi, My daughter, Anna, used crayons, pens, pencils and perm. markers to express herself all over the playroom walls. I got so tired of scolding her and scrubbing walls that I finally just ignored it until she grew out of that stage. She is now 22 and graduating with her Bachelors in Nursing (Summa Cum Laude) on Friday!

  11. She must be very very excited to see them. If you do repaint make sure to prime with oil based spray primer over the artwork. If you don’t it could bleed through over and over again. I bet it was hard to scold her for being so creative like Mommy.

  13. Your post really brightened my day 🙂 Dylan’s picture is sooooo cute! I’m voting for Kari’s answer–make it into a pillow or blanket 🙂 Our family wants a ‘do over’ for April. Never mind, we don’t, I’m not sure I want to see if April could be any worse. I hope May is a great month for EVERYONE!

  14. When my now 8 year-old daughter was about 2 she took a red crayon and drew a red line around the perimiter of my two sofas. When I asked her “why” she would do that, her response was, “Circle K!” How could I get mad after that!

  15. They are adorable! One day during naptime my son drew on his wall with crayons…it was really cute. It was also a year ago and they are still there! The colors are subtle on his wall and I can’t bring myself to paint over them quite yet. These years fly by so fast. You should totally take a pic and frame it. So cute!

  16. I don’t know if you go back and read old comments once you’ve gotten on with your awesomeness, but I’ve got to go on record with this. I am old enough to be YOUR grandma, and your biggest fan, probably, so LISTEN. You have said before that you aren’t into Art—-I take issue with that because you have the eye and soul of an artist and I strongly suggest that you take some Art classes and educate your natural abilities. I wuld have bought one your Mexican folk art placemats, and I would buy your wall, or at least a print of that very wonderful line drawing—truly I would. (I’m having a hard time typing this on my new iPad–I’m a verry hip grannie, with not verey good skills so I’m not going back and correcting this–you understand, don’t judge) Honestly, Dylan’s drawing is excellent—Picasso would be jealous. Do not, I hope you haven’t already, do not scrub it off. I don’t know what to suggest, but she’s not the only artist to have started out scribbling on walls. I’m doing “Art” with a capital “A” because I want you to look up the word in the dictionary and realize that you ARE an artist—don’t be afraid of “ART”. I think taking a college level class–say art appreciation, or whateverr they call it now—-would be time well spent. You already know instinctivly about design, color, balance, etc. etc.—–your already formidable talent will only become even more incredible with time, education, maturing (not that you’re immature), and paying attention to old ladies who only have your best interests at heart.

  17. Hand sanitizer does wonders on removing permanent marker off walls. Try it. Works nicely. Good luck.

  18. I ABSOLUTLY LOVE this series!!! I makes me laugh and reminds me that we are all human! And that this stuff happens to everyone not just me 😉
Thank you for having the guts to post this stuff!

  19. I would take a pic of it and scan it, and put it on a pillow. My kids are all grown and have children of their own. I miss the days where they would scribble on walls, one day my son who was 3 at the time, got up early and covered his brother who was 2 and his sister who was 1 with jam. The little ones were in their cribs, it was 7 am and I was laying in bed listerning to them laugh and I thought they were just playing. It was quite the sight, all you could see were their eyes. They were all laughing and giggling, there was jam everywhere. Jam and crayon washes off and markers can be painted over, but they are little for such a short time. Encourage their creativity and cherish the funny moments, it goes by so quick. love the post, love your blog thank you so much for sharing

  20. 2 years ago my then 9 year old daughter wrote “I Love Jake” in foot high letters in black permanent marker on her bedroom wall. I left it up and showed it to everyone that came over and embarrassed her so much she hasn’t even thought of doing it again haha! I finally repainted her room in November – but man oh man I had to use SO many coats of primer on that spot!
