So you know how craftiness with old book pages is H.U.G.E. right now? I love all of the wreaths and ornaments that people are busting out. I am not one to copy someones idea or a trend exactly. While I was figuring out what to do to make my fireplace more Christmas-y {Miss Mustard Seed} had just posted about her {book page ornaments}. And I was talking to {Becca} and telling her that I’m not really a banner type girl, but I needed something. She suggested some kind of garland. So Ta Da! This is what I came up with:
This is one of the easiest projects that you can do but it does take a little time.
First you will need some book pages. I used one of the bajiillion old Readers Digest books that I have in my abode.
Fold a bunch of pages in half “hot dog” style and a bunch in “hamburger” style.
OMGsh do you remember that from elementary school??!?!?!
Now you are going to cut on the folded side until you are about 1/2″ from the edge.
Put your page behind the string of lights
Wrap the bottom around and glue
So now it will look like this:
Poof it down underneath one of the lights (so it will stay poofed) and glue the top part
And you are done!
That was our “hamburger style” poof. Next you will do the “Hot dog Style” and alternate back and forth.
So cute and easy!

I LOVE this project!! Can’t wait to try it out for myself. Your fireplace was incredible, I could definitely tell it was your project. Congratulations on the big win!!
What a wonderful garland! I love that you lit it up!The book pages look charming~
Freakin’ awesome. You light it up girl.
~*~**LOVE it!!! I will have to give it a try for sure!! Hugs, Rachel~*~*
This turned out soooo cool! I think it would even look great as a garland around a Christmas tree…mmmmm. 🙂 See inspiration just works its way around.
Did the same for our recent festival of lights Diwali (https://sunupd.blogspot.com/2010/11/from-darkness-to-light.html).
Such a simple and quick idea! We’d make lanterns of them in school as kids. The form is so simple and beautiful. I wrapped mine around glass and lit a candle inside. They looked beautiful that day and they still look beautiful standing on the fireplace now.
This is Freaking Brilliant! I love your ideas! You own Martha Stewart in my opinion!
VERY CUTE!!
I love making paper lanterns to celebrate Chinese New Year. I’ve never strung them with lights though. Super idea for a fireplace mantle!
I love this. I actually went to Michael’s today to buy supplies to make a book page wreath. This garland makes me wish I had a mantel.
I love this! I am definitely bookmarking this for later!
Congrats on winning! I’ve got a new blog and this was featured today! I’d love if you stopped by and grabbed a button!
