Ahhh, The Power of an Email.

By Mandi 09/08/2011

If you guys all lived by me do you know that I would seriously just want to hang out all the time?

Its true. After of course my house was cleaned.

But since you don’t live by me and we cant spend hours eating chips and salsa and visiting, the next best way to connect with someone is a simple email.

I have found some of my very fave blogs and best friends from a short email.

I have heard more stories about families that are affected by addiction than you would ever know. Each one of these stories have touched my life.

I love getting project pictures from you guys! It is SO fun to see what everyone is working on.

Sometimes you get a blog recommendation from a friend or you are blog hopping and discover kindred spirits along your path.

Do you know how LUCKY we are to live in this creative corner of blogland? Everyone is so willing to feature others and make our Google Readers 500+ blogs long…(oh wait, yours isn’t that long? Huh.)  From what I have seen and learned no other niche is like ours. Few others spread the project love like the Creatives.

So I would like to give thanks and spread some love today.

First off I have been living under a rock, on a remote island in the south pacific, living off of shell fish and wearing banana leaves. I recently found the most awesome blog, its pretty small, I am sure you’ve never heard of it before…

Oh wait, you have? Ya, I am the only one apparently that is LAME-O! Click over to Isabella and Max Rooms to see the simple email that I know is the start of a made in heaven DIY friendship.

I got an email about a week and 1/2 ago:

Hi Mandi,
As I begin typing this I wonder if you get these types of e-mails often. I hope not because that would mean far too much tragedy is out there. I’ve been following your site for awhile now and you have made me a huge fan of thrift store. I know this is not your type of thing but as a friend I’ve got to do everything in my power. One of my best friends is in need of help. Her husband had a brain hemorrhage about 10 days ago and is in serious condition. He was a month a way from graduating as an endodontist. The hospital bills are piling up not to mention the hundreds of thousands of dollars in dental school debt they have from the last 6 years of schooling. He will probably live but never be able to move his right side again. So his poor wife is not only faced with the challenge of providing for her family but also worrying about how she will pay off this enormous student loan debt. His wife was hesitant to even give me the okay to put her story out there and start a donation blog because she doesn’t want to ask for a thing for anyone. But her husband was/is one of the most kind guys I’ve ever met and she has two young boys she has to worry about providing for all on her own. He’s the kind of guy that would go get your crying kid from nursery for you. The last one at the ward party helping to clean up. He is that amazing. She’s in Dallas where he was attending school far away from her family in Utah at his side in the ICU. She’s faced with life’s greatest challenge without her companion and best friend because he is the one in crisis. I can’t even imagine and I feel so helpless so I’m trying to share her story. Every dollar counts for this family whose whole world and livelihood has been turned upside down. I appreciate anything you can do to help share her story. They so desperately need it.

  1. if I were the stalker type I’d give you ten minutes to clean your house and then insist on the chips and salsa…

instead I’ll just clean MY house today and you can drop by anytime with those chips 🙂

and I’m off to check out those two blogs – I am in constant awe of the strength that is offered through blogging “families” – it really does make me grateful for such a wonderful bunch of people!

  2. My sister has MS and in a wheelchair and a few years ago they started finishing their basement, and she needed a lift to help her get up and down the stairs. But it was expensive! A friend of hers set up a website called “liftamom.com” I was so touched that I always thought that we should continue the website for other moms that need a “lift”. Maybe not literally, like my sister. But I hope that everyone that can, will help this family! Everyone needs a lift sometimes.

  3. I am always touched by people’s caring words and actions. Thank you Mandi for being real, and for posting things like this. You have a huge influence and I know you her friend are helping them. As a side note, 1. I’m going to Euro Treasures on Saturday because of your blog! 2. I’m 6 hrs away (Ogden), too bad we don’t live closer or I’d demand a tour of your beautiful house. 🙂

  4. Super surprised that you didn’t know about Janelle. But probably because you are busy doing projects. I always find inspiration from her. I adore her daughter’s room that was the first thing I saw of her’s and it stopped me in my tracks.

Terrible to read that story of that family in crisis. I’ve been having a hard time of late and this makes me stop and thank God for what I do have. There is always someone else in a bigger crisis.

  5. This is one of the many times I wish I had tons of money instead of being unemployed and in debt. I will pray for them and post this on FB. Thanks for letting us know!

  6. Chips and salsa are a staple at my house. As in I’m pretty sure that’s the only way I get my veggies. 😛 Also, don’t feel too bad; I hadn’t ever heard of Isabella & Max til just now. And thanks so much for sharing that email. My heart goes out to the Hales family.

  7. I stopped by from Janell’s to tell you how much I loved that chair. Then I realize that your blog is where I saw the acid mirror. It was quite awhile ago. I then did my own version with a mirror that was already peeling. No acid needed. You can see it here.

    So, small blog world indeed.

So very sorry to hear about that young family and all that they are having to go through. My heart goes out to them.

  8. Hi, I am so sorry about your friends. I will say a prayer for them. I found you through Janell’s blog to let you know that I love your chair. I also would love to have chips and salsa and be friends. Come by my blog.

  9. Oh my goodness I am sitting here bawling as Im reading this. This poor family was in my ward here in Las Vegas. It was before we moved here so I dont know them personally but everyone in our ward is heartbroken about what has happened to Rob. So great of you to spread the word and try to help this family.

  10. If I didn’t live all the way in Seattle I would insist on those chips and salsa, who cares about a messy house!! With all of us there, it would A. Only take a fraction of the time to clean, and B. Just get messy again!!! lol
Thanks so much for posting this story about the Hales. My thoughts and prayers go out to them. I will definitely be sharing their story with others I know.
Keep up the fantastic work, love your blog!!!

  11. just got the intro to your bloggie from janell’s site. so glad to meet you and you had me at “love your guts”

  12. Hello, I think you are the coolest– I check out the blog and leave skipping and singing. I’ve entered the crafting with the stars contest, just in the hopes of meeting you– You’re kind of a big deal… Thanks for sharing your coolness right on my computer.

  13. This post is what is truly impressive about the blog world. I may not have the time to answer the phone, or take a shower some days 😉 but reading an email … a permanent message from someone that is positive and thoughtful is better than anything else sometimes. Way to pay it forward!

  14. What a wonderful post Mandi! I’m a new reader too but your thoughts echo mine — I’ve made real friends via my blog that I never would have met otherwise.

I’ll keep the Hales in my thoughts and prayers.
